ENOUGH IS ENOUGH;UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN MUST MAKE PROVISIONS FOR "CATCHMENT AREA" IN HER ADMISSION PROCESSES

In the heart of any secondary school graduate, there lies the desire to secure an admission into one of the best Federal Government Owned Universities in Nigeria. The reasons for this cannot be farfetched; The affordability of the Federal Universities' tuition fees when compared to a State owned University, the very gigantic and beautiful structures and ultimately the international recognition attached to them.

Because of the large number of applicants these federal universities attract, the modality of admitting students has always been an object of serious debate and intellectual discourse. The argument of making the admission modality strictly "merit" has always been negated by the chants of Federal Character/Quota of the country which ensures that the right to enjoy any Federal Government initiated privilege must be exclusive to all regions of the federation, thus making it unachievable to build the admission criterion strictly on "merit" because some particular section of the country might be ignored.

The bid to make the admission into federal universities open to all regions necessitated the need for an initiative termed Educationally Less Developed States(ELDS).This intiative was was aimed at enhancing the educational zeal and fair distribution of admission opportunities to indigenes of states with lesser educational exploits. In every admission conduct in all Federal Universities, there are spaces reserved for aspirants who score lesser than the required percentage for the admission requirements but who are indigenes of any of the Educationally Less Developed States(ELDS).This has suppressed the imbalance in the admission allocation but has in return agitated the host communities of these institutions who strongly believe they have been cheated for no good reason.

To subdue the anger and bitterness of these host community,It was imperative to introduce another admission strategy that will give the indigenes of the host communities and its environs a lead in their admission pursuit ahead of other aspirants. To attain this objective, Catchment Area was inserted into the admission modality of all federal Universities in Nigeria.

Over the years,University of Ibadan erstwhile known as the University College,Ibadan has failed to listen to the yearnings of her host community to provide for the insertion of "Catchment Area" in her admission processes.University of Ibadan has long restricted her admission modality into satisfying the needs of Students who merit the admission requirements and the Educationally Less Developed States(ELDS) indegenes. If the Premier University is indeed an institution that upholds justice and equity,One will wonder why the institution serves as a place of abode for Educationally Less Developed States(ELDS) aspirants who are mostly indigenes of far away states from the university but has refused to lessen the burden of its host communities.I do not aim to promote or Cheer mediocrity but to bring to notice the immediate need for the introduction of " Catchment Area" in the admission processes of the University of Ibadan.

To further buttress my unrivalled position at this issue,I will allude to the University of Lagos,Obafemi Awolowo University, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Nigeria and the University of Ilorin. These great citadels of learning have always upheld the great importance of Catchment Area in their admission dealings. They make provisions for the Educationally Less Developed States,Catchment Area and students admitted based on merit. This has not in any way degrade the institutions' pedigree rather it has enabled them maintain a cordial relationship with its host communities and the nation at large.

In Conclusion,if the University of Ibadan maintains the position that the application of Catchment Area in its admission consideration will polarise the University's admission transparency. Then,I would suggest the University of Ibadan scraps the usage of Educationally Less Developed States(ELDS) in her admission process and other Federal Government owned institutions admit solely on merit with no special consideration for Educationally Less Developed States(ELDS) and Catchment Area whatsoever.

Get rid of tribalism.
UI continue with ur good works.
U are among only few unis in Nigeria that tend to unite all tribes together with ur admission policy.
I wish other unis could follow ur footsteps.

God bless Ibadan for such wonderful and merit deriven uni.

Injustice dear.

Unilorin considers aspirants from North Central before any other regions.

Why should UI then regard me equal with an aspirant from North-Central? undecided

It's apparent some viewers, out of sheer mischief have decided to overlook or perhaps disregard my last paragraph.

The Paragraph reads;;

"In Conclusion,if the University of Ibadan maintains the position that the application of Catchment Area in its admission consideration will polarise the University's admission transparency. Then,I would suggest the University of Ibadan scraps the usage of Educationally Less Developed States(ELDS) in her admission process and other Federal Government owned institutions admit solely on merit with no special consideration for Educationally Less Developed States(ELDS) and Catchment Area whatsoever."

This paragraph is geared towards enlightening the readers that as long as other Federal Universities apply "Catchment Area" in admission procedures.. UI has no moral right to abandon Catchment Area in her admission.

Once other Universities jettison this Catchment Area system...No more agitations from me wink wink

Mtchew. wetin this poster dey talk naw? UI attracts the best. If you like, come from London, If you no do well, u re on your own.
About the ELDs last year, it was because of the Waec/Jamb system of grading. Many students from ELDs are brilliant but their environment doesn't allow their brilliance to show.
If you know you are not from any of the ELDs, then do well.
