DANGER OF OVERCONFIDENCE
Read 1 Peter 5:6-11
MEMORISE
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
(1 Peter 5:cool

There is a Yoruba adage which translates: “The much underrated rivers can sweep away the most veteran of swimmers!” This is to instruct whoever cares to listen to elderly advice not to be overconfident in, and of anything. The Word of God educates us not to throw away our confidence (Heb. 10-35). Yes, but it does not encourage anybody to be presumptuous, heady, haughty or self-sufficient (Prov. 16:8; 1 Cor. 10:12). Whoever tows this path, heads straight away into irreparable destruction. Remember, instruction is given to avoid destruction!
Peter, a spiritual sage to all Christians, charges us to be very sober. This means we should be vigilant. Do not underrate any pitfall. A brilliant but overconfident student can fail, even with his rare ingenuity! Apostle Peter counsels us to indirectly learn from him. Remember Jesus Christ, at the eve of His trials, forewarned him concerning the impending temptation. Peter, seemingly bold, audacious, vocal, but overconfident, played down the warning that he would deny Christ (Matt. 26:33)!
Before you are caught in the web of the evil one, humble yourself now. “Bold face,” like people say, will not scare the devil away from tempting you. Your seeming boldness and outspokenness never move the tempter. What you should do is to be prayerful and watch out (v. cool! Many great sport men who believe in their “special” abilities to go through without their coaches instructions, have failed, most woefully! Don't be a victim; humble yourself now.

PRAYER POINTS
1. Lord, deliver me from every manifestation of complacency.
2. I refuse to be the devil's prey through carelessness, ignorance or overconfidence. Lord Jesus, help me to humble myself.
3. Lord, give our youths the willingness to follow the godly instructions of the elderly, so that they would avoid the pitfalls of life.
