Both of them play the same type of music. Nneka recently released the concrete jungle with anticipated success like asa's first album albeit getting more media coverage. Both of them are eccentric and very African ladies. Who do we prefer between them?

I prefer ASA
i'm currently playing Bibanke by Asa cool

i'm not a big fan of Nneka. I've only heard the song "Africa excuses" or something like that and i hated the lyrics. they don't relate to the average person living in the country n i found it a bit disturbing.

That song is cool. What is disturbing about the lyrics?. You don't like the truth about Nigerian condition and stop blaimng the west for your problems?

Re: Asa Or Nneka? by aloyemeka2: 5:37am On Feb 07, 2010
She is very philosophical. For sure, musicians like her rarely make a lot of money from music. Glorifying and selling  se/x is what gives money in entertainment. Look at Erykah Badu, Common, Jill Scott, Talib Kweli etc. She is not on any drugs, that's just how they normally talk. They always come weird. Asa is more of a hip reggae musician and not very spiritual like Nneka who is more into neo-soul. Asa has more chances of making bigger breakthroughs if she releases more secular albums but Nneka does not sound like somebody who will do that. Her message is the last thing people love to hear. The inconvenient truth.
Re: Asa Or Nneka? by shilling(f): 5:42am On Feb 07, 2010

most common place nigerians (rightfully) blame politicians for their problems. they don't blame the west!! i'm sure if oyinbo came to naija today they will even all be fawning and worshiping his/her sight not throwing stones. most nigerians living in nigeria hardly even use the word "racism" in their vocabularies. I personally had to come to america to find out the meaning of racism. it doesn't exist much in nigeria. so what does she mean by "it's so comfortable to say racism is the cause" is she speaking to AAs or Nigerians?

and also, how many "blame the west" topics have you seen here on nairaland vs blame obasanjo, yaradua and co. get what i mean? so yeah maybe her song will apply to AAs in america but not the average nigerian most who probably prefer colonizers/ the west over the politicians we currently have in power now anyways!!

so, her lyrics and the setting of her video doesn't match. and it feels disturbing to me that she is blaming the victims (the commoners she used in her video) ie let's blame ourselves. etc

she even refers to the west as "our colonial fathers "   lipsrsealed  in a very patronizing way.
apparently, according to her, we are "abusing" britain. and we should stop that. lol

anyways, i hope i have explained myself. and of course that's my own opinion and interpretation. each to his/ her own.
that was the first song I heard of her and it was so confusing to me I had to look up the lyrics to make sure I heard her correctly.lol
i'm sure her other songs make sense though. i hope.

Asa on the other hand, I can relate to her lyrics. fire on the mountain refers to widespead violence in nigeria, her song Mr Jailer refers to the nigerian govt.
just like Fela's music that refer to the govt and the international organizations, religious and ethnic strife, nigerian corrupt and complacent culture -good or bad etc
now those are lyrics the average nigerian can relate to.
Re: Asa Or Nneka? by rockyfela(m): 10:20am On Feb 07, 2010
@ Oyinda she is not only speaking to Nigerians but to all blacks, she is going universal which is very good. She is the best export of naija music we have now. I love Asa a lot, They both are awesome, but right now is Nneka's time to shine. Listen to Heartbeat, Kangpe, sufri, focus. Awesome tracks. She can sing, rap and she remains true to her culture and people.

Even FIFA recognized her sound. she performed on Letterman's show. she has a good promotion team behind her. She just released her album so lets support her and give her all the buzz she needs.

Asa would soon release her 2nd album and when it comes out We all should in turn support her. IL personally buy her album and sing her praise like i always do.

Re: Asa Or Nneka? by eldee(m): 1:50pm On Feb 07, 2010
First of all . . . Nneka can't really sing, she can't rap, remove her lyrics and she's just any other person.
Go listen to From Africa to You off the No Longer At Ease album, Halfcast and you'll see what I'm saying.
Well . . . that's the same with Bob Marley and Floetry, so it's not that much of a disadvantage.
So talking about vocal abilities, Asa tears her apart.

Now about being original, Nneka does, hiphop and R'n'B, rock and soul . . . she even has dubstep versions of her songs.
She sounds more European than Nigerian. . . she's kinda like using Reggae, rock and hiphop, (all of which appeal more to the West) to deliver her message.
She flops when she tries to sound African . . . try Niger Delta off the same album.

Asa on the other hand is more African, her style of music, her lyrics, her look . . .everything.
To her 'yeye' is still the Yoruba word for mother cheesy cheesy

All in all, I think they are two totally different musicians . . . the only thing they kinda share is the messeage.

oyinda.:

i'm not a big fan of Nneka. I've only heard the song "Africa excuses" or something like that and i hated the lyrics. they don't relate to the average person living in the country n i found it a bit disturbing.

I see where you're coming from.

The most special thing about Nneka is her view on issues. . . she's half German and half African, that's like being half Jewish and half Arab.
She sees things in a way that none of us can . . . hence the lyrics that seem to escape from the whole 'fight against the government' thing.
She kinda relates more to the rest of the world than she does to Africans.
Infact, only reason most Nigerians ever claimed her was because she got famous in America.

Yeah, it does mean she's achieved relative fame in America compared to other Nigerian artistes.
David Letterman Show, EA Sport's FIFA, the critical acclaim she's got, MOBO Awards . . . she said it herself that no one knew her in Nigeria till she won the MOBOs.

Ok; I think she has a good promoter and Asa should seek for such managers and promoters. There are over 2 billion good musicians in this world. The promotion is what matters, if you are not put out there, nobody will know you. I still love the fact that she is selling herself as Nigerian and not German. Some Naija musicians who achieved international fame either denies their root quickly or refuse to talk about it.

My point was pointed in my first post on this thread.
She's not as good as Asa, the only reason she's been rated higher is because she's the most famous Nigerian artiste out there . . . c'est fini.
Re: Asa Or Nneka? by Genuflect(m): 8:50pm On Feb 07, 2010
