I will say this a thousand times, true federalism isn't the panacea to the myriad of problems bedevilling our dear country, bureaucratic corruption is.
If power and resources are devolved to the states and we have what we colloquially call "true federalism", the scourge of corruption which has stymied the growth of our economy for eons would simply relocate her headquarters down to the states! As a matter of fact, even with the status quo, in my own assessment, corruption prevails in the states more than the federal level.
If I were to suggest a way out of the quagmire, I'd say we totally "de-comercialise" our democratic processes and institutions.
Make that teacher in the classroom earn more than that councillor in the wards.
Make that lecturer earn more than that Assembly member and Federal legislator.
Make that nurse and doctor earn more than that commissioner and minister.
Make that researcher earn more than that governor!
This way anyone not cut out for a life of sacrifice and servitude wouldn't go nowhere close to the vaults at both the state and federal level.
In civilised societies, the take home of political office holders are calculated as a percentage of the minimum wage; what system do we have in place here? Some crooks wake up and sit leisurely under some roof filled with green and red seats and alot all manner of scandalous privileges to themselves while the people simply look on helplessly!
If we wanna check the decay in the system and we are honest about it, in my opinion, this should be the starting point.

It is easier to fight corruption at state or LG level than to fight it at federal level You dey answer omenka  When u reduce d take home of senators u would also reduce contract kickbacks and constituency projects? Some ppl don't know the take home is not our problem but d access to funds. A unitary system is embedded with bottlenecks and corruption. Let every state find its own unique solution. 3 Likes |
