Sometimes when I see the list of skills plus years of experience demanded for programming jobs in Nigeria I begin to wonder if these recruiters/employers have an iota of idea what programming is and how many years it can take to become proficient in tons of skills they list

Am I the only one seeing this? I see job requirements like: HTML5, CSS3, ASP.NET, JavaScript, Java, C#, WordPress (development), MySql, Jquery, Ajax, Laravel, Angular, Sql Server, Oracle, Code Igniter

And before the end you'll see something like "good knowledge of C++, Python, will be an additional advantage"

One person? For $1,000,000 or for N100,000 job? Haba!

Even for $1,000,000 finding developers who are proficient in all those technologies/languages is unrealistic and goes to show how selfish or uninformed some of these employers can be.

Someone should help educate them please.

Actually, I know many from that list and the rest are not a problem.

...but I'm sure those who write those stuff don't know much about programming. LOL

Lol. You see, something with programming languages is that there is no word like pro (I once saw a funny picture of a programmer trying to know everything about a language)

After learning a language, I can tell you I'm a pro. If you challenge me to build a software, I already know how to go about it...above all google is there.

...

So if you find that kind of job, just tell them you're a pro! gringringringrin it is obvious they don't know much of what they're saying...a Radio station wanting an android app and telling you to know javascript...tell them you're the author of javascript sef. Lwkmd

The problem is not just in Nigeria is everywhere and the reason for this is that most hiring managers are not software engineering or computer science graduates so they don't understand what software development is about. No programmer is an expert of any programming language unless they are doing very simple stuff as each language is very wide for just one person to be an expert on that language as each language is built by a team of dedicated software engineers and electronics engineers.

This is like saying you want a doctor that has experience of Gynecology, Allergy, Neurology, Geriatric, Dermatology, Urology etc . This shows how unrealistic these hiring managers are and yet at the end they will give the job to the wrong person due to who you know and then get contractors in to come and write the program for them

Obviously no one knows all there is to know in every language, but when we say someone "knows" a language we know what level of expertise we are talking about.

Also, my friend that is assuming you can just pick a job on a language you don't know and just Google up a solution when give a project, you are being ridiculous! Try building a web app using a language you don't know on d comfort of your home. Now compare it to when working in a company or for clients, under deadline.

Note: knowing the basic syntax of a language doesn't mean knowing the language, otherwise I can learn any language in one day via YouTube videos

Lol. Speaking about the frameworks, many of us here on nairaland have ours...that could even rival welknown frameworks...the problem is not writing one, its getting it out there for other programmers to accept. dhtml18 even talked about a great framework by him the other day. cc dhtml18

Also, see this thread. https://www.nairaland.com/3557200/astro-programming-language-0.2-indefinite ...a programming language by a nairalander

Bros there are 4 distinct programming languages in this your list, namely JavaScript, Java, C# and PHP. Being PROFICIENT in those 4 programming languages to the level of calling yourself a professional/experienced developer will take a couple of years.

Also, WordPress DEVELOPMENT? I don't know about you but I think it is another thing many developers find challenging. It is equivalent to learning a programming language. Unless you mean modifying a theme or creating a JAMB admission calcuator plugin I created one morning before leaving house.

Maybe my mistake hear is trying to look beyond keywords and syntax. Maybe it is that I imagine database design instead of SQL syntax. I mean, CREATE TABLE foo IF NOT EXISTS.... doesn't mean one knows database...

hehehehe. Some people in this thread will not kill me...busy disproofing me of things I said...forgetting to understand the concept of OP's thread.

Well, my friend, different people learn in different speed. I remember a job that required rails, I hadn't even written a hello world in ruby. I was very good it many others and was experienced. I finished the job in a week+ as demanded, till today, may rails-friends can't believe twas rapid learning and googling.

All you need is experience. When you know what to expect from every good programming language...that is all...almost. grin

You are right. My tutor once told me that programming languages are just tools, and that if you know how to program (think), you can build stuffs in whatever language you or your clients want.
