EFCC list: US, EU ask for Evidence

Washington has challenged Abuja to provide evidence on which it leveled corruption charges against some leading opposition candidates.

The State Department said the action became necessary because of the " seriousness of the accusations and the implication that those implicated have been adjudged guilty even before a trial before a competent court."

The tough talk from the U.S government underscores the growing concern of the international community to the face-off between President Olusegun Obasanjo and Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. Sources said the statement followed a formal protest lodged by supporters of Vice President Atiku Abubakar to the administration as proof of their claim that the government is out to disqualify the VP and other candidates who have disagreed with government policies .

The administration said the government should take steps to diffuse the current controversy surrounding its decision to release the list because of the wider implications for the April polls.
"The timing of the report is suspect especially since the EFCC has the power to take these citizens to court if it has evidence of any wrong doing," the administration stated. Meanwhile, the European Union has also called for "proper investigation by an independent lawful agency" to the allegations of graft against some opposition candidates. It said Nigerian officials should have given all those allegedly implicated a chance to defend themselves before making the list a public document.
Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu has continued to accuse president Olusegun Obasanjo of arm twisting the EFCC into releasing the list, despite contrary evidence that most of those mentioned are innocent.

"Some of the Progressive Peoples Alliance candidates on the list have no connection with any government having lived abroad for several years. How can they be accused of corruption?" he asked.
Action Congress candidate and former Anambra State governor, Dr. Chris Ngige dismissed the report as a "predictable attempt at blackmailing those who are determined to liberate our people". He said efforts to get him out of the race would fail as he is determined to ensure PDP candidate Andy Uba does not occupy the Awka Government House.

@McKren:

EFCC and current administration have shown the world over and over again that they are a symbol of total failure.

It is too late and inevitable for United States and others not to get involved; as I've recommended in the past.
Our leaders have sold themselves at a very cheap price, hence at this point it's impossible for a foreign neutral body not to get involved.
Our leaders have shown the world that they are totally incompetent to do it alone effectively and efficiently.

I still believe that without a neutral body monitoring and coordinating the coming election, it will be a total calamity and innocent citizens will be the ones to pay.

It is sad and very disappointing, but Bravo to United States and EU.

It seems to me that none of these leaders cares about the future of our lovely nation. When I close my eyes, I see Somali, Liberia and Haiti; it is appalling, something most be done ASAP.

That shouldnt be too difficult! afterwards they will not challenge it but turn it around with " he himself is corrupt".
Even if they do, it will be a case of washing dirty undies in the international arena wink

US and EU? Absolute trash.

They have no rights under the sun to ask Nigeria to make available any proof whatsoever.

Do they really think that other countries are mere branch offices ready to take instructions from them or what?

Afam,

Are you sure OBJ has not been taking orders from EU and US? for your information the control of Nigerian armed forces is in the hand of the US Army, Simply pt OBJ is a figure head Commander in Chief, also as regards the topic its bad for them to ask for evidence bt I think they felt EFCC is witchunting and a big liar.

@McKren:
Please do not get carried away, it's not that serious.
I've only referred this post to you because of a related discussion we had few weeks ago "Atiku inviting United States to monitor the coming election"
Can you remember?

Please, believe me, my man; you're alright, but not that important to me.

Furthermore, if typing your name in bold is making you uncomfortable, I promise, I will stop.

Americans don't have such rights to tell us how to run our country.
They should instead ask Bush to explain to Obasanjo why he went to Iraq.

This our America-philic tendencies drive me mad.
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by Mamajama(m): 3:43pm On Feb 09, 2007
Its amazing how all of a sudden USA want evidence from us.  where was USA when IBB cancelled the previous election?

Where is UNCLE USA when ABACHA was looting Nigeria treasury?

Where was USA when DELE GIWA was killed?

Where was USA when ABIOLA was killed and the list goes on and on.

Why is CNN focusing on the Niger Delta crisis now?

I strongly Blvd USA is only after the 1 million barrel of oil they get from Nigeria daily.  if oil is not involved they won't care if we kill each other.  Did USA go in to DAFUR ?  They want the list we will give them a list.

Megan's Law Home

Welcome to the California Department of Justice's Internet web site, which lists designated registered sex offenders in California.

As a result of a new law, this site will provide you with access to information on more than 63,000 persons required to register in California as sex offenders. Specific home addresses are displayed on more than 33,500 offenders in the California communities; as to these persons, the site displays the last registered address reported by the offender. An additional 30,500 offenders are included on the site with listing by ZIP Code, city, and county. Information on approximately 22,000 other offenders is not included on this site, but is known to law enforcement personnel.

Once you have read and acknowledged the disclaimer on the next page, you may search the database by a sex offender's specific name, obtain ZIP Code and city/county listings, obtain detailed personal profile information on each registrant, and use our map application to search your neighborhood or anywhere throughout the State to determine the specific location of any of those registrants on whom the law allows us to display a home address.

Not all sex offenders have been caught and convicted. Most sex offenses are committed by family, friends or acquaintances of the victim. Be sure to click on the links to the left for more information on How to Protect Yourself and Your Family, Facts about Sex Offenders, Frequently Asked Questions, and Sex Offender Registration Requirements in California.

This website indicates that many of these registrants are currently in violation of their registration requirements. Any information you may have on these individuals should be reported to your local law enforcement.

Did you see that/ in the so called US, the land of the free people's names are publised in the public domain before trial so that parents and kids will be weary of them. Tell me how that is different from people standing election who have questions of corruption to answer and the EFCC informing the Nigerian people to be weary of them.

Does the FBI provide proof of investigations to the Nigerian government?

BigB1 I tell you something, America is no ones friend and so too is EU. This people will not like to see Nigeria succeed. They are obviously not wishing a second China in the nearest future. Tell me why Nigeria should entrust its future in the hands of US, a country that openly predicted we will be a failed state soon. A country who some 8months ago was indirectly canvasing power to return to the North only to remind Nigerians 3 months to election that the two front runners are religous extremist. A country who is so quick to reports our failures and ethnic differences with the latest Niger-Delta documentary top on the list.  All they want in this country is confusion.
 When Hurrican Katrina happened did the US government not fail? did the world celebrate it.

I will always tell you this, nobody will help this country. We have to look for Nigerian solutions to Nigerian problems. PERIOD.

Unfortunately, we have a government that will readily please the West than Nigerians.

Sometimes I wished Abacha was still alive.

On the EFCC report, almost all the politicians and businessmen in Nigeria are dirty so drawing up a list is not a big deal because it will be easy to establish cases against these men.

But for US and EU to demand proof goes to show that they think too much of themselves.
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by BigB11(m): 3:54pm On Feb 09, 2007
@azorjiu:

Eventhough it is unprecedented, but United States have the totally rights to get involved.

Reasons:
Your leaders continue to display to the world that they're lacking the necessary ability, qualification, or strength to perform and lead our nation effectively and efficiently.
And guess what? When the sh*t hit the fan it is very common, infact inevitable for country like Nigeria to crawl back to United States for help.

Currently, United States is very busy with her own problems all over the world; this is why it is very imperative for them to take a proactive action to kill the fire before it becomes uncontrollable.

It is sad that most people do not think this way, but it is a proper action and I commend United States for it.

Good

So tell me how what the EFCC did is different from how the Megans Law (see details from earlier post) works in the US. In both cases there are people who have not been caught and convicted, in both cases the public is informed of who to be weary of without any court verdict proving they are guilty.
US should leave Nigeria alone.

@McKren:

I can careless about any scenario of the past.
My main concern is the security of the potential election casualties (innocent citizens) and the future of our great nation. We can not continue like this, it is not constructive and it seems like a time bomb waiting to explode.

Trust me, the explosion will be very unbearable at all levels.

Have you read about Somali, Sudan, Liberia and Haiti? All these countries are economically dead for at least another 30 years. and why? and for what?

Look, it is obvious that our Oil is getting us some positive attention from United States, why not take advantage of it?
There is no need to be panic and definitely no need to flex our dissolving muscle. Believe me, it's not about ego and pride; it's about security and future of our nation.

Do not let us make a senseless mistake that we will be paying for, for many many years to come.

Bring it on United States!

I can bet you guys that Aso Rock is rocking like a lost boat with this one. It is a blow to the presidency and his dirty cabinet.
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by BigB11(m): 4:31pm On Feb 09, 2007
I can also bet you that Aso Rock will respond quickly with their "Home Made Evidence"

Believe me, Aso Rock knows who is the master; and we can not blame anybody for United States involvement, but the greedy undedicated leaders.

Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by McKren(m): 4:34pm On Feb 09, 2007
@BigB1

This is not about pride, your proposal is like asking a hen to leave her chick in the custody of a hawk. It ai'nt going to happen.

And trust me that list is no blow to nobody, all Nigerian FG needs to do is to ignore the rantings of the US or EU. Nigeria does not answer to the US or anybody.

What are all the buzz about, Russia recently killed Alexander Lithunuenko on British soil. Even after clear evidence while trailing Polonium210 points to Andriy Lugovoy (an agent of Russian Government), Britain still cant do nothing. Why? Russia will not extradite its citizens.

So the point is Nigeria just like any other Nation does not answer to US, Uk or the EU as a whole.

If we had a responsible government we dont even need them to be our ally, all we need is to use what we have to negotiate for what we want.
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by BigB11(m): 4:46pm On Feb 09, 2007
@McKren:

You're very correct, "we do not have a responsible government" Therefore we do not have any choice but to answer to United States.
Trust me, every successful leader or politician knows better not to ignore a request from United States.

You can not compare Russia to Nigeria; it is totally unfeasible. Comparing the two is just like comparing Adewale Ayuba to P Diddy.

As long as our leaders continue to show incapability, United States of America will be forever in control.

It is sad and disappointing, but it is the fact.
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by Mamajama(m): 5:32pm On Feb 09, 2007
The country that rule the world, and that is why people are not happy with USA policies. they only showed interest when they are benefitting from the other end. Look at the script CNN is running for the last 2 days. It was stated USA get 1 Million barrel of oil from Niger Delta daily. what will happened if MEND shut down oil flow to USA? It will destabilize the USA economy and will send the barrel price up to $70 plus. The only reason they want to tell us what to do is because of the oil. WE do not need to send a list to USA its our country and we can do what we want.
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by BigB11(m): 5:50pm On Feb 09, 2007
@MAMAJAMA:

Read your own post, you've made the point yourself.

Can you blame United States for getting involved?

It is called win win situation; United States will prevent any potential stoppage to their oil supply from Nigeria, Nigeria on the other hand will regain the stability of the nation and many lives will also be rescued from danger or possible harm. Hence, yes indeed the situation is advantageous to both sides. And I see nothng wrong with it.

Moreover, it is very common and human nature to only get involved with situation that is beneficial; let's face the fact, how many of us will voluntarily get involved in situation that is not beneficial in any way?
Come on now, we are Nigerians, let's keep it real.

Stop bashing United States for looking out for self, let's bash the hopeless leaders that continue to drag us on the floor.

May God bless sweet Nigeria
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by Mamajama(m): 5:56pm On Feb 09, 2007
well this situation and development has nothing to do with leadership if you ask me. All USA is trying to do is

tell us what to do. Why do we even need their permission to select our leader? are they coming to rule us?

this is MODERNIZED COLONIZATION in my opinion. If USA want to be the BIG BROTHER. they should

go to DAFUR, and help the Sudanese. Send Luxurious busses to Lagos and help with the development of the nation.

Exactly we created the problem and only we can fix it as well. THey can stay right where they are and leave us alone to rule ourselfs.
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by BigB11(m): 7:16pm On Feb 09, 2007
@MAMAJAMA:

You're absolutely correction "we created the problem, hence we should resolve it by ourselves"
The only problem here is the fact that there is no "WE" anymore in Nigeria. The nation is totally divided by greedy leaders and believe me, this is a very dangerous zone.

We need a strong leader, who is determined, focused and experienced to lead and reunite this country; or else we shall continue to sing the same song for many years to come.

Yes, OBJ wants to do a lot, but the man doesn't posses charisma, no style, no leadership skill, unprofessional and definitely not respected by all. When all these qualities are missing, pretty much you're not capable.

United States and others could see this clearly and will not take the chance to leave us alone.
Re: Us And Eu Ask For Evidence From Efcc And Presidency by donnymikky(m): 11:58am On Feb 10, 2007
Why wont U.S and E.U demand for evidences against Atiku and co knowing fully well that over 98% of the total money stolen by these guys is right there in the U.S.A. and all over Europe. Orji Uzoh Kalu was currently said to be holding meetings at the White House with U.S officials while Turaki just came back from the States after a month holiday there. They are busy updating other countries about the happenings in Nigeria looking for support. It's better they know before it is too late that foreigners are not allowed to VOTE . Is it not funny that Atiku that was rigged to power in 1999 and 2003 by PDP is now telling the whole world that the ruling party has concluded plans to rig the forth coming April general Elections. This confirms that what goes round comes round!
