There's a post on the front page right now talking about how people were killed while worshipping in church in Anambra, and what do I see? A bunch of people using that opportunity to mock religion.


What is wrong with you guys? Are you too socially inept to empathize with the victims and their loved ones? Must you push your agenda at every single opportunity? And why are those comments receiving likes? There's nothing remotely cool about not recognizing the time and place to make your point.


This is incredibly low-hanging fruit that you guys are picking here. It achieves nothing, it just makes us look like a$$holes. We should try to be better than that because we are more than our beliefs. We are people first and so are the victims of that attack.

I don't think anybody went there to mock the dead, we rather mocked one of the claims of their religion which about 150 held dearly unto as true till their very end, then again I'm sure many of the survivors would give testimony soon to the "glory of god" which to them enforces validity of the claim about divine protection more

There was no intent of mockery on that thread, maybe I was a bit straightforward and I have since modified my first post on that thread. People let their emotions get the better of them and decided to quote me out of context.
I felt it was time for a sober reflection but I have since desist from trying to instill common sense into some folks.

You would have the same success praying to a milk jug as you do praying to your god -- the milk jug sometimes answers your prayer the way you want to, sometimes not and sometimes the answer is delayed. See the problem here? If things turn out the way you want them to, you say it was because you prayed. If not, it's because god knows what's best and you didn't pray for the right thing. Or, if it happens 10 years later you say god answered your prayer, it was just delayed. This is nonsense. You would have the exact same effect doing nothing

I did meet former theists who departed from their beliefs not because of calm well-reasoned argumentation and friendly guidance, but because they were hectored and mocked and considered fools by their peers. Truth is, some people respond better to analysis, some to empathy, some to logic, and, yes, some to invective and ridicule. There is no silver bullet for deconversion, and many disparate approaches are successful some of the time.
