What the church said about Ozubulu massacre

Catholic Church reacts

The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, Anambra, has described Sunday’s attack on worshippers at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu, by a gunman as regrettable.

The church, in a statement signed by Rev. Hygi Aghaulor, Director of Communications of the Diocese, and available to newsmen, said the Parish Priest, Rev Fr. Jude Onwuaso escaped unhurt.

He described the act as a sign of loss of what is sacred and consoled the families of victims of the attack.

“It is regrettable that our people are more and more losing a sense of what is sacred.

“What on earth would make people open fire on innocent unarmed worshippers including children and women on a Sunday morning?

“We condemn this ungodly act in its totality; we pray Almighty God to console the families affected and assure them that our hearts are with them as we pray for the quick recovery of the wounded.

“For the entire parishioners, we call on them not to be discouraged in their usual practice of faith.

“It is when the forces of darkness attempt to overshadow goodness that the light of God shines even brighter than ever just as it happened on Easter Sunday.

CAN condemns killings, calls for urgent investigations

Reacting, President of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, his eminence, Rev Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, described the attack as unwarranted, senseless, and wicked.

He said: ‘’What are these silly gunmen here and there turning our nation to be? Whatever may be the reason or reasons for this dastardly act cannot justify this criminal, jungle justice. Without doubt, the act is a madness all of us must condemn in strong terms.

‘’I urge the Federal Government, through the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, in particular, to address the issue of proliferation of arms and ammunitions so as to make our world safer.

‘’The perpetrators of this ungodly act must be brought to book without delay. I call on the Police to fish out those responsible and there must be no cover up. Enough of these killings in the country.”

ME: The church needs a mirror.

The sensible consensus around what happened at Ozubulu yesterday, as narrated by the Governor and those I spoke with from the village, remains that the man at the Centre of what happened who is popularly called Bishop was a well known indigene living in South Africa.

He built and donated the church where the unfortunate carnage occurred yesterday. The church accepted his gift without second thoughts or premonition that a day like yesterday might one day come.

There are allegations that he acquired his wealth through drug dealing in South Africa and was actually the prime target of the conscience dead assassin(s) that rained death and sorrow on our people.

He was also well known within the political and high society class in the state. They welcomed and celebrated him.

The Church accepted his donations without questioning his source of wealth. The political class in the state were happy to accept his donations and even canonize him. High society folks eulogized him and even some of those murdered by the animals in that church must have hailed him as a "philanthropist extra ordinary". A traditional ruler gave him the chieftaincy title of "Ebubechukwu Uzo of Ozubulu".

Uwa ntoor incorporated!

No church should ordinarily preach in support of ill gotten wealth. Why then will churches accept gifts from those with obvious black sources of wealth?

Is the Church not supposed to say "thank you we don't need Satan's gift to build a church for our God repent or perish"?

Is the society and traditional institutions supposed to eulogize and confer titles on those whose sources of wealth are murky?

If the society stops celebrating criminals won't crimes reduce?

Where is the conscience of the church, traditional institutions and the society? You all have your hands dripping with the fresh blood of innocent(?) worshippers at Ozubulu. Children were killed, women/mothers were cut down and men who do menial jobs to feed themselves and family were massacred with bullets of illicit drug sellers.

I am calling for self re-examination by the Church and society at large.

Look in the mirror, Church of Jesus Christ, you will see that you contributed to the making of that evil movie we watched yesterday.

If the church does not change we will certainly have more attacks in the House of God. Those evil men probably saw the church building as merely one of the proceeds of crime as against a revered place of worship.

But unto all those who dared God and man to enter that Church and murder folks in cold blood I have a message for you: non of you will live to enjoy your evil hand work. God will show himself strong and mighty and you will all suffer immeasurably till you beg for death.

Any politician, security agent or opinion leader who tries to cover up for or protect those involved in the Ozubulu massacre will suffer same fate with the perpetrators. God's angel of vengeance has been released and woe betide those who will stand on the way.

No hiding place for evil men as the blood and soul of innocent worshippers are asking God for vengeance.

Yet the church and society must look into the mirror and see how Ozubulu came about.

We caused Ozubulu to happen. All of us who won't speak out against ill gotten wealth.

JOK
