THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into the issues raised in the corruption allegations against the Lagos State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola.
EFCC’s spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi, told the Nigerian Tribune that the petition detailing alleged corrupt practices by the governor in the handling of the state’s finances was receiving the attention of the agency, just like any other petition.

“I am aware that the petition against the governor is being handled by the commission, just like any other petition,” Babafemi said.

Nigerian Tribune further gathered from sources within the commission that the anti-corruption agency boss, Mrs. Farida Waziri, ordered the commencement of the probe last Monday, following the perusal of the petition against the governor.

The petition was filed by a group, Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL).

A five-man probe team was also said to have been raised by Waziri, with members drawn from both Abuja and Lagos offices of the commission.

The investigators from Abuja have reportedly arrived in Lagos in readiness for the gathering of evidence on the corruption allegations levelled against the governor.

The Lagos House of Assembly had also set up a six-man panel to investigate the governor of the alleged fraudulent acts in the handling of the state’s finances.

The move by the lawmakers is now a subject of litigation in a Lagos high court, which had halted the probe in the interim.

While inaugurating the panel, Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, had stated that “the committee was charged with the responsibility of looking into the allegations of financial impropriety, abuse of due process and the rule of law, as well as violation of several sections of the 1999 Constitution against the governor.”

Relying on the issues of corrupt practices raised against the governor by another group, the ‘True Face of Lagos,’ the petitioner accused the governor of plundering the state in the name of delivering democracy dividends.

Among other allegations, the governor was accused of giving N250 million to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to organise last year’s NBA conference that was held in the state.

He was also accused of spending N420 million in six months to hire private security through the State Security Trust Fund, while N2 billion was allegedly spent on infrastructure, on roads and drainage in Ikorodu General Hospital.

Fashola was equally said to have spent huge sums of money on the planting of trees and flowers in a state where they claimed there was no water, adding that a certain Tunji Olowolafe executed up to 70 per cent of all Lagos government contracts.

The governor was alleged to have awarded a 2km portion of Western Avenue for N7.7 billion to Julius Berger, while N135 million was alleged to have been used in fuelling 225 vehicles in the governor’s office.

It could be the handi work of Tinubu, 'cos none of the allegations raised by The False True Face of Lagos adressed the issue of ALPHA BETA and HI TECH construction company contracts in care of Tinubu.

Some of these God father politicians are dangerous. Many of these contract review could be a trap by Tinubu for Fashola. There is hardly any project Fashola is commisioning that you won't see Tinubu by his side. He cannot say he doesn't know anything about their genesis. But i know God will see Fashola through in this trying time.

Some guys still wanna pull him down
This country will never grow.

The only performing Governor out of 36 is being cruxified.

No rest for good people. Similar to what happened to Prof. Ambrose Ali, then governor or old Bendel state in the 80s. Despite all his genuin efforts at uplifting the state he was hounded by his rivals, who accused him of being corrupt. Bottom line is that the fact that a governor is performing and delivering dividends of democracy to the people means he has to step on many toes who normally thrive in anarchy and corruption. If they are therefore deprived of the ill earned livelihood, they would go after the poor governor like cancer.

If this guy was really corrupt and looted the state treasury as Ibori, Odili and Igbinedion did, and leas he would have used a fraction of the money to buy his way out, bribing the media, judges, EFCC, PDP, etc.

How sad. How very very sad.

In a country where corruption and bad leadership is a way of life, any govt official
that is doing otherwise will ordinarily will pulled down.
If it were the stinkingly corrupt governors and administrators,
you ll hear jargons like immunity clause saying a serving elected official
can only be probed at the end of his/her tenure.

Did nt they see Alao Akala of Oyo state,Akwa I bom state govnor,Yaradua Inlaw govnor of Bauchi state with over 900 pa's,and the rest over corrupt govt officials to probe?

The court bared the House from investigating Fashola because of conflict of interest since the House was part of the complaints, now they lifted their complaints off the House basically to remove the conflict of interest just to allow the House to go ahead with the probe without the conflict of interest allegations and in effect bypassing the court ruling.

Talk about the accuser, the judge, the advocate and exonerator.

These are nothing but lying clowns peddling rubbish and carrying other faceless people's water.

I really want them to investigate Fashola and I think this is good for Fashola himself and Lagosians in general.

The only downside is the fact that it displays how easy it is to slow down the wheels of government since any d!ic!k and harry is allowed throw any allegation at the Governor/Government (True or false, merits or no merits) and set in motion state and federal investigations.

And shouldn't the house first demand for documented evidence of misdeeds by the Governor and present it to Lagosians before even going public with their intent to investigate? or is it just that all you need to waste state's funds and manpower on investigation is plain insinuation? Are these people for real?

I'm not even reading anything about embezzlement, huge sums in private bank accounts locally or internationally. This is nothing but your generic allegations of overspending and misappropriation.

We are not blind, we see what Fashola is doing with state funds.

Lagos state has a budget of 426 billion naira to take care of 18 million people and huge infrastructure demands. Rivers state's Budget @ 434 billion naira to take care of just 5 million people and less infrastructure demands is bigger than Lagos state's budget. So, we can't honestly say Rivers state with just 5 million people is excelling than Lagos state with 18 million people terms of demands and development.

I say go ahead and investigate Fashola. Make him a bigger hero.

I don’t see what constitutes corruption in any of the “allegations” the newspaper printed. Spending state funds on certain infrastructure projects may or may not be imprudent spending, but it is not corruption. It would be corruption if the governor had diverted a portion of the state funds into his personal account, or had taken kickbacks in awarding the contracts in question.

For the newspaper to print a story like this without asking the requisite question where or how the governor corrupted himself is sinking low in journalistic standard. The news media in Lagos need to do better than this. They need to dig deeper into these allegations to find out who is driving them through these proxy groups. If there are practices of corruption in the governor's office, they need to vet and publish them. I have my criticisms of the Fashola administration, but official corruption is not one of them.

As regards the N7.7billion contract for Western Avenue, the same issue was raised during Tinubu's era.

The contract sum for Lagos Island roads was far higher than usual but the government defended it. Julius Berger gave more years of waranty than other contractors did.

Tinubu said the opportunity cost vis-a-vis the period of waranty made the contract sum right.

Let's see if that excuse would be untenable in Fashola's case.
