Snail Farming still remains one of the least tapped aspect of livestock venture.
Be it the the species based on consumer wants and needs and market demand, be it the Achatina Achatina, Achatina Marginata, Achatina Fulica, Snail business is something anyone can delve into regardless of your neighborhood as it doesn't constitute any environmental hazard as regards handling and waste management because its the least offensive in waste extrusion.

BREED & SPECIES

The real AA or Achatina Achatina is available in Nigeria but very scarce to get and it lays up to 400 to 500 per clutch and if anyone tells you in Nigeria that he has it, it is 98% of the chance that the person will surely sell to you another sub specie of Achatina Marginata because all the breeds of Giant snails have their sub species.

In the Western Nigeria alone due to my extensive research and gathering of snails from different part of Nigeria and African countries extensively, we have over 17 sub species of The Marginata snails in Nigeria. The type of snails in the west by shell observation are quite different from snails in the south and in the east as the western Nigeria snails are by far bigger. We also have the Achatina Fulica We, Achatina Reticulata that also lay large quantity of eggs per clutch by far more than the Achatina Marginata or the Believed Tiger snails.

PEN CONSTRUCTION:
A lot of inventive mechanism can be employed in the pen construction.
From wooden pen, to plastic tanks or tarpaulin tanks meant for raising fish or for fish pond in the metropolitan area be it 12ft x 8ft, or 20ft x 10ft depending on the space available to install the pen. Note that in the course of management, you must have them covered at night so they dont crawl out and wonder off or better when they are segmented within a pen. More so, be sure to put up the pen in a cool and well shaded place to avoid dehydration.

FEED:
Snails feed on over 700 types of crops and plant as long as they are not acidic in nature. A lot of people make the mistakes to patronize people claiming to have specially formulated feed for snails which in the end kills all your breeding stocks due to poisonous constituent in the feed. Please be weary of such fellow and if you are not sure of the source and contents of the feed, better you resolve to the regular organic feed to be on the safe side.

WATERING:
A lot of people make mistakes by soaking their snail pen in water as if they are aquatic animal. Snails are air breathing animal, if you soak them in water or allow in water into their shell they will surely die. So be careful to make sure the pen is well structured to drain out water from the pen and not to allow pen flooding. Unlike a lot of things you read online and hear from media about snail management, its not what it really is when you practice it however less complicated it may seem.

PROSPECT AND RETURN ON INVESTMENT:
Snails commands a handsome return on investment and profit as it is a salient and quiet business, unlike fishery, poultry, piggery, rabbits, beef and ruminants animal production. I tell a lot of people, as long as periwinkles can have its exclusive market in Nigeria, so snail business will surely have its market. Be it Achatina Marginata, Achatina Fulica, Achatina Achatina, you will always have you market with little or no competition. A well processed snail can be a major export business to seemingly forbidden country which may consider it as contraband if you get your export network and papers right.
