Are People From Onicha-ugbo Igbo Descent? by xsey: 10:34am On Feb 19, 2010
Hi everyone,
Are delta people different from igbos?
They bear 'Igbo'
Names like, Ngozi,Nnamdi, Nneka,Uche, Ikpada, Ifeanyi,

Their language looks like igbo and have igbo traditions,
At least, I hear them speak a bit of igbo(the ones i can hear) I also hear them yearning for thier own state.
My friends claim they don;t belong to the igbo, In fact, they don't like anything relating to igbo people according to them, But i believe to the contrary because i see them more of an igbo(except that they are not business inclined like a typical igbo people in lagos)

While I was there, I also noticed an arguement between a man from Agbor, trying to communicate to a woman from Onicha-ugbo. They could not understand each other's language, But why do some other people from Onicha-Ugbo speak and hear proper igbo language.(I mean the core Igbo)

What is the difference in these languages and these confusion,
I am now a totally confused yoruba man because I have read a whole lot on these topic online and I a am now more confused than before,
Is it not like the yorubas, Oyo, osun, ogun, ondo, ekiti,

Which tribe are these people.?
Thanks

That name onicha ugbo makes it igbo.onicha exists all the way in igboland up to ebonyi.onicha mili, onicha olona, onicha ngwa, onicha uboma and a whole lot of others.

@post.my 1st reply was that they are igbos.if you however mean tradition of origin then there is definitely some families who trace their origin to bini and igala.this diverse tradition of origin occurs almost in the entire igboland.

They are qualified Efulefu. Such persons could be mistaken for sacrificial objects in their village.

@Poster, in your conviction they are Igbo. That is what they are. The issue of ancestry does not determine whom one is in today's world. You are Yoruba isn't it?. Your ancestry points towards the mid East. Does it mean you are from the mid east?.
Issue of ancestry breeds confusion and division. Most Igbo communities east of the Niger understands this very well that is why, they do not care about that.
Search that your friend very well, he may not be from Onicha Ugbo. They are proud Igbo people. In Delta Igbo region, identity crises is in tiny parts of Ika and minor fractions of Ndokwa.
On your friend not understand his Anioma neighbour. It is common in Igbo and Yorubaland. I understand Yoruba yet I do not understand Akoko Ondo.

Which one be real Igbo

Maybe he was referring to the indigenes of the 5 Igbo states as real Igbos which is a fallacy cos there isn't anything like real Igbo. Igbo bu Igbo.

Some peeps might differ. undecided

I can claim that "Onicha-Igbo" is Yorubaland and bring valid arguments toi explain that it was originally settled by Orisha worshippers and its original name was "Orisha-Igbo" (meaning "The Forest deity") and therefore qualifies as a Yoruba domain.

But I believe if the natives themselves believe that as their origin they should self-initiate a link and conciliation back to that proud heritage.
The will of the people is supreme to the validity that exist in any virtual logic online.
Re: Are People From Onicha-ugbo Igbo Descent? by Abagworo(m): 2:16am On Jul 11, 2011
@op.Your question is not well placed because there is nothing like Igbo descent.I think they might be of Nri and ancient Bini descent like most other Delta Igbos.

I don't think one can even get a clearer answer if Eastern Igbos descent is questioned.

Are Aro people of Igbo descent?

Are Abiriba people of Igbo descent?

Are Oguta people of Igbo descent?

Are Ohaji people of Igbo descent?

Are Owerri/Oratta people of Igbo descent?

Are Isu/Isoama people of Igbo descent?

Are Orsu people of Igbo descent?

Are Nri people of Igbo descent?

Are Awka people of Igbo descent?

Apart from Delta,Anambra and Enugu States are Igbos of Nri descent found as full clan in Abia,Imo,Ebonyi and Rivers?
Re: Are People From Onicha-ugbo Igbo Descent? by ezeagu(m): 2:32am On Jul 11, 2011
Please, people should not insult whole communities, be specific about who you're talking about, after all some natives of Onicha (Mmili) said they're not Igbo.
Re: Are People From Onicha-ugbo Igbo Descent? by odumchi: 5:04am On Jul 11, 2011
Yes they are. Aro people are descendants of one of the original Igbo clans that settled in the SE.
Think of Igbo as being this, a man and a woman both spoke Igbo and their Igbo was the same. They both multiplied and had children. Their children had children and they moved out to settle in different places and they countinued to multiply and resettle. As they multiplied and diversified, their Igbo languages fragmented into many separate and distinguishable forms of the same original Igbo their ancestors spoke and that is how the separate Igbo clans or "mba's" came to be.

@odumchi,The Aros are descended from three groups of Igbo,Ibibio and Akpa. That is the case for most Igbos and other Nigerian ethnic groups. We are all mix of people but linguistically dominant in one and recessive in the others. That is what makes the OPs question a difficult one.

@ OP, Just worry about your Yoruba ppl and issues affecting them and quit butting into ours with your claptrap. How does it affect the price of your garri? My fellow Igbos please ignore the foool. This is just another attempt by some jobless tout to create another Igbo bashing thread. I wonder why u can't smell the insincerity.

Aros are not descended from Ibibios though i must admit that the empire itself was founded with the help of two Igbo generals and an Ibibo or Akpa prince. The land that we now reside on was originally Ibibio but after the Aro-Ibibio wars, the Igbos from central Igboland came and settled here. Because the Aros alligned themselves with an Ibibio prince in the war does not mean that we are descended from them and remember, Igbos migrated form the north of the SE and the Ibibios resided in the South near the Atlantic coast so its a near impossibilty for both of these groups to bopth have inhabited the same area at the same time and unite to create an atogether new clan- Aroos. Even if such a union had occurred the Aros would have adopted Ibibio as their native language since at that time (1600s) there was a major Ibibio presence in the area.
Re: Are People From Onicha-ugbo Igbo Descent? by abagoro(m): 8:52pm On Jul 12, 2011
@odumchi.I am not from Arochukwu but you can enquire from your fellow Aros on your history or visit Aro facebook page or website.I never implied that Aros are Ibibios but only wrote what I read that the three groups played major role in the founding of Arochukwu.

It is difficult if possible to get a pure breed of any ethnicity.

No problem, I am already there.  cool

And yes I agree with you it really is difficult. But if so then doe sthat defeat our "labelisation" as a homogenous ethnicity?

Re: Are People From Onicha-ugbo Igbo Descent? by odumchi: 5:30am On Jul 13, 2011
The saying that we are a homogenous ethnicity. One language, one tradition, one culture.

no such thing is fake or real igbo. If you speak any igbo dialect and bear an igbo name, you're igbo.

True but sometimes you ve got to let pple claim whatever they feel like cos no matter how you try, they have made up their mind and have passed it to other pple. For instance, I have seen Bamidele Ajayi, Kunbi Aladeloba from Edo (the Ajayi guy claims to be married to a Yoruba woman but each time I see the 2 of them, I smile). Then Omolade Alade, Opeyemi Omowa from itsekiri, just to mention a few. And going by names and language, itshekiri is just an arms distance from the Yorubas. Yet, nobody is draging with the other.

Even if you drag this issue till eternity, those who will agree will and those who will deny it will deny it. Irrespective of where you belong, just do your best, leave foot prints and walk away.
