What is your gain. That's all matters what's is your monthly Income .
strangeland:
I started this in July 2017. I rented a pen house in the Epe axis of Lagos (At a "mates" rate of 50k) I purchased 3500 chicks at 17 weeks old @ N1,400 each = N4,900,000. The funny thing is I couldn’t buy them directly from the seller I had to go through an agent who charge N30 per bird = N105,000. After buying the bird I got them debecked for N14,000. Got them vaccinated and gave them antibiotics for a disease called Newcastle. Med N42,000
The birds arrived at my farm at 19 weeks and fed on 84 bags of grower weekly (That is 12 bags per day) @ N3,400 each = N285,600
Generator cost N5,000 per week
ND+IB Vaccine (14/08/17) N6,800
Miscellaneous cost average N29,000 per month
It is important to weigh a sample of birds every week to check on their progress in growth
This is the summary of average weight:
31/07/2017 @ 19 weeks old bird weight is 1,080grams growth of 133 grams
07/08/2017 @ 20 weeks old bird weight is 1,118grams growth of 38 grams
14/08/2017 @ 21 weeks old bird weight is 1,276grams growth of 158 grams.
Increase fed to 98 bags of grower weekly (That is 14 bags per day) @ N3,400 each = N333,200

My bro that sound like a foolish idea. You made a huge mistake before starting u would learn more about what you are going into. Some poltry invest lesser in the feeding.
dominique:
Phew! That's a lot of cash invested so far. May it yield profits in multiples.

Update please! ( in my office boss voice)
My sister Inlaw just ventured into egg production after a successful outing in broiler last December. She also started fishery ( fingerling production)

This business is a money spinner if one can handle bio security as well as disease control. The biz is in my retirement plan.

The op is indeed doing well. I like the way u leased a poultry to start off as well as starting off with poulets to save time. But u didn't tell us how u treated the pen/poultry house to prevent disease outbreak, but I know u must have done such for you to have zero mortality as at ur last post. The cost of buying land ,building and equipment is high and can take a large chunk of money.

I will also advise you physically count your layers once in a while.my hubby told me a story how one of his customers was dealt with by his farm attendant. The attendant was selling his chicken in droves cos they were many and were not being counted one by one. They only used mortality to know the remaining number.
Also beware of any of ur staff that is always calling God and does church church things. They make you lay down your guard before they hit hard.

Egg production is the real deal if you have the money. Broiler has season but egg does not. I would upload the feasibility study of both when I see where I kept it. The study was a final year project of an animal husbandry student that was published. It compared broiler production for a year ( I think 5 or 6cycles) and egg production and both are not anywhere close.

Most people tend to see d present figure 7.5m.......

But when you do your IRR for 3500 layers @80% rate of return what you get is good mind you any cost dat is fix as to be spread over years let not forget that, that being said

Return on create of egg @80% rate of egg production would give this farmer a return of. ..

93creates of egg daily
Selling rate. .. #800 nnaira
= # 74400/day
Layer mash = #55125

Ppday = #74400 - #55125 = 19275/day

Income per month = 19275*30
= #578,250

Income per year = #578,250*12
=#6,939,000

Spent layer sells
Morality 5%= 175
3500-175= 3325

Selling. Price = #1300*3325 =
#4,231,500

Total income = egg sells per year + spent hen sells=
#6,939,000 + #4,231,500 =

#11,261,500

All things being equal
Just look at that, anyway the farmer is on the right part.

.Op,The average weight of the at 22 weeks should be 1.7kg and I think at 22weeks,you should be on 60+ percentage egg production now.another thing I noticed about the picture of the egg you post is that I noticed you are overfeeding your birds.your running cost is also on a high side.good luck

Its not a waste but its not the best ...how do i put it...It would have been invested for the holistic farming project, its too much for just poultry...I'm sure he will be investing a significant amount on feeding which eats deep into the expected profits...its too much

I know time has passed but it’s on record that you are extremely naive. You don’t talk down on people’s business the way you just did. Provide constructive advise if any and move on. Don’t be a dick head, you can be better.
