The kind of trend in the so believed revamped Nigerian music industry is wrought with nothing but bunch of artistes who lacks core creativity, imitates each other, lacks originality, unnecessary flaunting, display of semi-nude dancers, in fact 95% of the musical videos are dastardly excessive with sex appeal, even the one that doesn't needs it. Hitherto, the quality of the musical video productions in all aspect so far has again proved how futile their endeavors has been in trying to stylize with the American type of hip-hop, r&b, etc musical genre, in fact the zaniest of all previous attempts. Numerous Nigerian musical videos, especially the ones from Lagos reflects not only the artiste's but also the directors' ineptitude in mimicking even the whackiest of American musical videos.

What prompt me to write this thread actually began with some friends of mine who are always excited about even the most obviously maladroit of Nigerian musical video. I keep telling them if Nigerian directors and artistes keep wallowing in their self-appraised, far-fetched prestige
as a consolation for their poor production instead of heeding to constructive criticism which not only individuals like me points out, thus they would have long time ago developed better and maturely.

I also tell my friends that in as much as American movies and musical videos seems very okay, almost perfect, although most are make-believe, a lot of critics still criticize their video productions, works, musicals, movies, video games, etc and because they are receptive to it and they so much love and welcome criticism they shape up and hence they keep getting better and better. But, it is in this part of the world that one realizes that even most of the producers, directors, etc don't even know sh1t about production or even studied a bit of cinematography not to talk of directing, casting, and all the tiers of production.

I ain't giving them a bit of break if that's what you mean by the word ""lacks because they aren't putting their best. If you think what we are seeing on tv is their best then you are so so wrong about us being the best compared to ghana and them. check musical videos from S/A and compare the quality, concepts and directing.

Why do we hate constructive criticism? It is clear the OP wants Nigeria to be good hence is comment, there may be a thread already, but it do not mean you insult him. Come on, why do everyone around here - especially those who post here a lot, feel they have to be condescending towards others? It is only the internet please calm down.

@OP, you have a point, but I guess with times people will start to appreciate better things and all these weak stuff wont have the attention of the market anymore. Hence they will be forced to step up their game or risk losing out.

How is calling someone 'myopic' an insult? If you can't appreciate the growth the music industry in a short number of years, then you are being myopic. SA can't even lick our shoes when it comes to music. Why should I even argue with you? You think 'Nigeria is God's own toilet'

May not be an insult per se, but at least condescending.

In retrospect, or should I say conversely, the OP in my opinion actually appreciates the growth, only that he is being critical in a positive way. Something a few cats around here do not appreciate.

I am running late, and not keen on arguing. This is more of a civil discussion.

I hate to point this out, but my signature is a quote [hence why there are " "] - meaning it is not my own words or what I think. However it is a protest at the state of social and political affairs in Nigeria. This have nothing to do with music.
Re: Nigeria Musical Industry Wetin Dey by Genuflect(m): 9:50am On Feb 24, 2010
I know I can't quote someone who thinks my country is God's own toilet. Or that's constructive criticism too? Na una own wahala be that sef. No matter what you think, Naija Hip-Hop will eventually take over the world!
Re: Nigeria Musical Industry Wetin Dey by ElRazur: 9:59am On Feb 24, 2010
It your problem not mine. I happen to agree with the quote at hand.

All this agidi like chair barber is nothing. I am naija like you and love naija. We just happen to have differences in idea. In the mean time, please let us be nice to one another. I know you post here a lot and I respect that, please respect others as this is a place for civility and not wahala.

Good. Stick with your opinion and I stick with mine
Re: Nigeria Musical Industry Wetin Dey by ElRazur: 10:54am On Feb 24, 2010
Opinions will forever be challenged, just as long it is done in a civil and intellectual manner.

Speaking of criticism please listen to the track I posted and give me your thoughts. Good or bad, i do appreciate them.

Sorry can't post the link as am on my phone. Check out the thread "here is a beat I made". Thanks.

Please, when are you going on your 6-months self exile from Nairaland AGAIN?. . . .at times, I wonder why peeps like you and MrCrackles even bother. . . .Nigeria, God's own toilet indeed!

@ topic
Me thinks the music videos are the actually best thing about the Naija Music Industry. . . .Most of the videos directed by the A-list music video directors like Clarence Peters, Dj Tee, Tosin Igho, Wudi Awa etc are top notch and of world class quality. . . .yes, even better than most american music videos. . . .You can't fault the concept, uniqueness, creativity and production of music videos like Infinity's Olori oko & Aiye o le, Rooftop MC's Shock Therapy, Gino's No be God, Kween's jebele, Modenine's cry etc. . . .THESE MUSIC VIDEOS ARE OUTSTANDING anyway you want to look at it. . . . .Me thinks the quality of music videos is very good vis-a-vis the infrastructure, limitations and production technology on ground. . . . .our music videos are clearly the best in Africa and better than many American music videos. . . .how many unique American videos even dey there sef?. . . .only Mj's thriller readily comes to mind NOW. . . .Needless to say, if I were doing a top 20 countdown of my best/favourite musical videos of the last 5 years, at least 10 Naija music videos will make my list. . . .infact a Naija video might just be no 1 (thinking of Gino's No be God).

Apparently, I am like HIV so you can't get rid of me.

I think to claim Nigeria is the best in something subjective is just inaccurate. There are good videos in Nigeria, but the bad one outweighs the good ones. To deny this is just silly.

There are loads of videos that are considered "landmarks" videos from America et al. Try and read up history of mtv, watch videos of other genre of music and it become obvious.

One of my landmark Nigeria video will have to be "ti oluwanile" by Baba wande. Yes there are better videos now, but for me it is what I will consider a very good video and raised the bar. (my example is a movie, but you get the point)

Speaking of good videos, I think Pon Pon Pon by Day Grin is very good. Like I said before, I like the use of fish eye lenses and how it captures the essense of the song lyrically.
Re: Nigeria Musical Industry Wetin Dey by truthseeka: 7:51pm On Feb 24, 2010
I am so very sure Nigeria will never be better at producing good original musical videos, all responders don't get my point yet. If you watch even some almost okay musical videos like Psquare's Do Me I Do U, every thing was done in S/A and they are several others like that.
Re: Nigeria Musical Industry Wetin Dey by Genuflect(m): 8:11pm On Feb 24, 2010
Haven't you seen other crazy videos that were done in Nigeria? At least find out about what you oppose before you start opposing it

You guys are making sense. But without constructive critism, one cannot get better. critisize with reasons and point, not blabbing. many of the video directors are whack thou. they need to find out what their true callings are, and few are good.
Re: Nigeria Musical Industry Wetin Dey by saharachic(f): 8:35pm On Feb 24, 2010
