I am trying to buy an SUV and after doing my research (considering price, versatility, reliability, etc), I have decided to settle for a Highlander.

So between the 2nd generation toyota highlander (2011-2013) and 3rd generation toyota highlander (2014-2017), which is more rugged for Nigerian roads? You know the bad state of Nigerian roads.

Which of these 2 generations is more suitably adapted to the bad state of Naija roads?

I am not concerned about aesthetics, functionality or year of manufacturer. I am only looking at reliability on Naija roads.

Please help.

I don't consider a Highlander an SUV.

But my taste is sharp and I do not know what the OP is into.

I own the 2012 highlander. It is just and elevated car. Guess the 2014 will be same. I don't advice you to use it the way something like a 4runner should be used. It actually drives like a car. Good luck.

If it drives like a sedan isn't that a good thing? I mean who doesn't like an SUV with lots of cargo space and good ground clearance, decent off-road capability and still drives like a sedan. I wish my SUV drives like a sedan. Though there are lots of suv that drives like a sedan much more than the Highlander. The more it drives like a sedan the better unless u are going to do some serious off-road.

I won't say downhill, rather blending with the competition. I think they are trying to separate the suv's from trucks. When other companies like Mercedes are making the m63 amg (a 4wd suv with 550hp and sporty look) every other company needs to step up and make beautiful sporty looking suv's (afterall suv means sports utility vehicle ha ha ).

All thanks to the j35 v6 motor. The suv is fast but not really light on its feet .
It's heavy.

I've driven. The 2011-2013 highlander . And I will tell you it's really nice . The 2GR v6 engine in that car is more responsive and it's fast too.
You can attain speeds of 160kmph with little stress and it still feels balanced.
Nice interior and a beautiful masculine look.
the 2014 -2017 will actually be better and smarter.
It's gonna be rugged also.
The only reason why you shouldn't choose it is because parts might be more expensive. But since you can afford it please go for the new design. 2014 -^

This is so true, the ground clearance is just too much and affects cornering. But very comfortable and ideal for long distance journey on the highway, and it is pretty fast too.. that v6 engine is a beast. Though terrible mpg in city driving, decent on highway.

The way the rear of the car bounces after speed bumps is funny.
You can feel the weight .

If you floor that ride and down shift a lot like I do. Mpg will suffer.
But I'm used to the fuel economy

You're missing the point and I think it's intentional.

The Cherokee was the go to off roader for family folks who live in the country.

The Wrangler is not practical for everybody.

It actually feels better on long trips with up to 7 passengers, that's when u feel the balance (my opinion). And u are very right, flooring it is fun but mgp suffers.. me I drive gently but it good to have that power available whenever u need it. Mine is still in pristine condition, no single error code expect for that stupid TPMS light that comes on after like 20 mins of driving caused by the changed valve in one of the tyres .

The Highlander is a mid-size Crossover SUV. Comparatively, the major difference between the 2013 & 2014 model is in the styling as the 2014 has a larger grille opening with headlamp and turn signal that takes up half of the front fender. They share the same engine but while the 2013 came with the 5 speed automatic and auto-manual, the 2014 has the 6 speed automatic & auto-manual gear. Both engines have the same output at 270 hp.

The 2014 has a slightly better (marginally) MPG at a negligible 1mpg better. Also, voice recognition is standard on the 2014 model. No so much of a difference in the interior. The 2014 model spare parts obviously would be much more expensive. In terms of reliability, they share similar ratings and would certainly serve the purpose with a good maintenance culture.

These vehicles are not designed with the Nigerian road in mind. Remember that the more deplorable your roads are, you are more likely to visit mechanics often. If you 've got very bad roads, then the 4runners and prado might better serve your purpose.

You must run away from kazeems and refrain from the all oil is the same mentality that most Nigerian car owners have.
