Do Most Christians Ignore Jesus' Advice To Not Pray In Public? by Magnetor(m): 9:15am On Sep 10, 2017
Do most Christians ignore Jesus' advice to not pray in public? If so,
Does this demonstrate a lack of understanding of Jesus' message?Does this promote hypocrisy?Does this cause a lot of conflict with non-believers?

Matthew 6:5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.6"But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.…

No, most Christians have private times of prayer, spent with their heavenly Father. But yes, for some “Christians”, there is hypocrisy and a lack of understanding of the message of Jesus involved. That said, what is prohibited by Jesus is not all prayer in public (indeed, Jesus Himself prayed a few times in public - though nothing compared to the nights spent in private prayer), but public prayer in order to be seen by others. Praying together with fellow believers is not what Jesus had in mind, though. E.g. see how He asked his disciples to pray with Him in Gethshemane. Or how the early church prayed together for Peter when he was in prison. IMHO, the present-day Christians are in greater danger of simply praying too little in general, rather than in danger of public prayer in order to be seen by others.

As for conflict with non-believers, my experience has been that most non-believers appreciate it when you pray for them, even in public. Of course, you always ask first if they mind.

What that passage simply means is, do not pray because you want people to notice you and to gain their approval as a "good, prayerful Christian". But instead when you pray, it should be a genuine act, simply because you want to communicate with God and not to get the approval of mere man.
That said, you can pray absolutely anywhere even in a crowded place as the spirit leads as far as it's a genuine and non-hypocritical act.

1. The religion of Christianity is built on a foundation of ideas that have no connection to the teachings and commandments of Jesus Christ. Yes, His name is thrown around by those of the religion but none of His actual teachings and commandments are respected by the adherents of the religion beginning from the very top down to the least among them. That is why everywhere you go on the planet, Christians are not much different from those of the general population in terms of their living and reasoning. undecided

2. Jesus Christ clearly said in His Gospel that those who pray where others can see or hear them pray are no better than the Pharisees — those who are against Jesus Christ aka AntiChrist. undecided

3. I have never in fact met a Christian who prays in private away from the hearing and sight of others. Even when Christians practice their so-called private prayer, they do so where others can hear them praying, and that is against Jesus Christ. So it is safe to say that Christians are more Pharisees — antiChrist— than they are of Jesus Christ. undecided

Yes, Jesus Christ instructed His followers to pray with Him, this after He already gave them the rule, and so they knew to do so in private — away from the sight and hearing of others. Do not attempt to throw Jesus Christ under the bus here to create an excuse for the gross disobedience of His Law by your religion of Christianity. undecided

4. Most nonbelievers understand and accept the hypocritical ways of the Christians, after all, they too don't live by anyone else's rules except that which is of their own will. So they understand why Christians, in deed, reject Jesus Christ even as they claim to believe in Him. undecided
