“Man or Machine”. That’s the phrase that should be ingrained in the subconscious of all 21st century innovative pioneers of artificial intelligence. True to say, there are always two sides to a coin, the same principle applies to artificial technology, there is the good and the no-so good aspect.

The overall research goal of A.I is to create technology that allows computers and machines to function in an intelligent manner that surpass that of man. Intelligent in the sense that it’s reasoning, problem solving, knowledge representation, all revolve around the use of algorithms that require enormous computational resources.

Everything we love about civilization is a product of intelligence, so amplifying our human intelligence with artificial intelligence has the potential of helping civilization flourish like never before as long as we manage to keep the technology beneficial.

From Apple’s “S.I.R.I”, fify messenger bot, Microsoft cortana to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence (A.I) is progressing rapidly. While science fiction mainly portray A.I as robots with human-life characteristics, A.I can encompass anything from: -

FACEBOOK MESSENGER BOTS (Fynd’s F.I.F.Y):- It claims to be an intelligent fashion discovery and transaction bot, it has memory and personality to mimic humans. She retains characteristics peculiar to each human she interacts with, enhanced context awareness. It’s basically a fashion bot that interacts with humans on latest fashion trends and gossips.

TWYLA FACEBOOK MESSENGER BOT: - TWYLA is an artificial intelligence messaging platform that puts a smart chat bot in your life chat channels to answer questions, deflect tickets and free your agent in terms of 24 hours life support.

MICROSOFT CORTANA:- CORTANA is an intelligent personal assistant created by Microsoft created to be used on platforms such windows 10 , windows 10 mobile, windows phone 8.1, Microsoft band 2, Microsoft band , android, Xbox one, Skype, IOS, cyanogen OS, Windows Mixed Reality, Amazon Alexa etc. It is available in various languages like English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese (mandarin), and Brazilian Portuguese and so on. It also performs specific functions like setting reminders, voice recognition without the need of keyboard input and answering questions by making use of search queries from Bing search engine e.g. Current weather, traffic conditions, sports updates and biographies etc. (Read More)

APPLE’S S.I.R.I:- it is an intelligent personal assistant part of Apple’s Inc.’s IOS, watchOS, macOS and tvOS. It makes use of voice queries and a natural; language interface to answer questions, make recommendations and perform by delegation. Languages include: - Arabic, Cantonese, Danish, English, Dutch, French, Finnish etc.

All the above named are all various uses of A.I in creating bots which also includes Google’s search algorithm to I.B.M’s Watson, to autonomous weapons.
A.I has found a vital role in computer science – as its use for facial and fingerprint recognition or only internet searches or only driving a car. Its incorporation to serve as the mind and consciousness of robots in the case of the humanoid named “S.O.P.H.I.A” has brought forth the question of ethics in science and technology. This trend, if left uncurbed can lead to unfathomable implications. It would resort into a devastating arms raise in lethal autonomous weapons; in the long run, it could undergo recursive self-improvement, triggering an intelligence explosion leaving human intellects far behind, lead to massive job loss incomparable to one’s present today.

Its ill effects births the question of ethics applicable to science and technology i.e. the ethics behind its creation; since the negative far out weights the positive impact (Note: The positive impact should not be over looked). Autonomous weapons that rely on A.I are only programmed to kill and in the hands of the wrong person, say a terrorist, these weapons could easily cause mass casualties which would in turn spark an A.I war that will only lead to further bloodshed as these weapons are designed to be extremely difficult to simply “turn off” by flicking a knob or switch.

Empathy and emotions evident in the day-to-day life-style of humans would be virtually impossible to recreate in the so called “A.I Enabled Robots” as that is out of capability of today’s technological advancements. Therefore, it develops a destructive method for achieving its goals. As a side thoughts, human treat insects as pesky, little disturbance, if the actions of A.I doesn’t align with ours, who knows they may treat us as we treat the insects. Humans are at the top of food chain not due to size, tenacity or aggressiveness but because of our intelligence that ranks higher than that of animals, now that the level of intelligence of A.I have the capacity to supersede ours, the impact will be that they have capability to overtake humans at the top of the food chain therefore cementing their dominance.

What makes the A.I risks scary is that it is one of the few innovations that is genuinely an extinction risks if it were to go bad far ahead of a dangers of nuclear explosion. With a lots of other risks, it is actually not surprising to get to an extinction risk. The thing for humanity to fear is not quite the robots of terminator (“Basically just armored bears”) but a more incorporeal intelligence capable of dominating humanity from with. The treat of such a powerful computer brain would include near term (And near both) unemployment, as replacements for human workers are quickly developed and replicated.

Concerns have been expressed in the media by popular scientists such as Steven Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates, etc. to the risks posed by A.I. It is hoped that the entire science community heeds this warning for the benefits of the existence of mankind.
