You begin to imagine those old and ugly looking houses in the villages built by our forefathers. A house that suffer from the impact of rain and flowing water every raining season. The walls and other partitions shrink away just like sugar put into water. So, if the question is posed to you , can you build a house made of cement/laterite? You answer is an emphatic “no”.

COST ANALYSIS INVOLVE BETWEEN BUILDING WITH HOLLOW CEMENT BLOCK AND INTERLOCK BRICKS.
Case study of a 3 bedroom flat: (Using hollow cement blocks)
BLOCKS
It requires about 4000 blocks to build a 3 bedroom flats.
Cost of 1 block = #190.00
Total cost of 4000 blocks = #760,000.00
MORTAR
Cost of mortar used in laying the blocks;
Using cash build calculator. The size of a block is 18 by 8 inches surface area which is equivalent to 0.4572 by 0.2032 meters.
Since we are using 4000 blocks. The total surface area is (0.4572 * 0.2032 * 4000) = 371.612 sq meter
It will require 68 bags of cements and 10tons of sand to lay the blocks
A bag of cement = #2,600, thus 68 bags of cements (68 * 2,600) = #176,800
10 tons of sand = #30,000
PLASTERING
Cost of plastering the house; if the plastering is 12mm thick
It will require about 52 bags of cements and 10 tons of sand to plaster in and out
Cost of cements (52 * 2,600) = #135,200
10 tons of sand (very smooth) = #35,000
WORKMANSHIP (bricklayer)
Bricklayer charges #50 per block, so to lay 4000 blocks, it will cost about #200,000

The sum total amount requires as analyzed above is about #1,336,000.00

INTERLOCK BRICK BUILDING
Making bricks: Since we are using clay, rich contents are found few inches below the top soil. The cost effective method that will be applied is this, since every house need a source of water for domestic use. The water table is getting lower almost every season. Hence the need to dig a well where good quality of water will be found. Thus about 16 to 20 rings of will be dug. The dug out soil will be not be discarded because they are rich in clay content.
The house will equally need soak away / septic either 1 or 2. The dug out soil will also be used.
MAKING BRICKS
Since the surface area of the interlock bricks are 9 by 6 inches unlike hollow cement blocks.
Thus it will require about 10,500 bricks.
We will use wheelbarrow to calculate the quantity of soil that will be used.
1 bag of cement to 6 wheelbarrows will produce 50 interlock bricks
Thus it will take about 1300 wheelbarrows (140tonnes) to produce 10,500 bricks.

From the well and 2 soak away ,about 500 to 600 wheelbarrows will be obtained. Thus remaining about 700 wheelbarrows of clay soil.
A truck load of 20 tons has 200 wheelbarrows, thus about 4 truck load of soil will be required additionally.
A truck load of sand cost about #10,000, thus 4 truck load cost #40,000

Amount of cements required
1 bag to 50 bricks, since we are producing about 10,500 bricks, it will thus require about 212 cements
Total cost of cement 2,600 * 212 = #551,200
Screeding the internal wall to prevent insects from lurking in between the little gap is cost little, it is assumed that it will cost less than #20,000
To hire interlock brick molding machine, the cost is #14,000 a day and it will produce 1500 bricks in a day. Thus, it will take 7 days to produce all the bricks for the flat
Total cost of hiring machine is #98,000
Workmanship for arranging interlock bricks is #10, so to arrange 10500 bricks, it will cost #105,000
Total cost of laying interlock bricks to finish is about #804,000.00

OTHER ANALYSIS
Painting: the same amount is required for painting both houses
lintel molding: Cement block house requires reinforced concrete all around windows and doors but interlock house does not require reinforced concrete. There is a cost effective way of making the lintel.

Then hire the machine out for those intending to build house. From experience, a lot of people marvel at this construction.

HOW TO GENERATE INCOME BY OWNING A MACHINE.
The hiring price is between #14,000 to #20,000 depending on the location. Imagine how much you will generate in a month if the machine works 25 days a months. You can generate about #400,000. That is a better investment.

All I need is to out right buy the machine (well most likely 2 of them) to produce the bricks / blocks for about a 5KM length fence and a few workareas. I have workers and project managers that can handle it.
