Nigeria’s population may hit 180m by next census’

The Dean, Faculty of Public Health, University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Oladimeji Oladepo, has predicted that Nigeria’s population may reach 180 million by the next census, going by the rapid increase in birth rate across the country.

Oladepo addressed reporters in Ibadan at a one-day seminar jointly organised by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Centre for Population and Reproductive Health (CPRH).

Speaking on Women and Reproductive Health Decision-Making: The Role of Women Journalists, the professor of Medicine stressed the need to check population growth in the country, saying available resources and facilities cannot cope with the rate of the growth.

He said: "The population of Nigeria is still very high. Now we are about 140 million and it may extend to 180 million when the next population census will be taken. The question is, what resources do we have to ensure that the increase in population is well catered for?

"Do we have the resources to deal with the issue of human capital development for the population in such a way that they can live their lives fully and resourcefully?"

of course the resources cannot cope. . i feel 150million ppl is enough for us in Nigeria,for optimal growth
