WHAT HAVE THEY BEEN DOING WITH ALL THE TAXES OUR GRAND PARENTS HAVE BEEN PAYING, SEE ME I CANNOT EVEN AFFORD CLOTHES TO WEAR?

[You have made a valid suggestion and we look forward to discussing in details how VAIDS can be beneficial to us all, the need for tax compliance and how this present administration is ensuring accountability for every revenue generated.]

I think you have raised valid questions but this approach will not work
The law requires that you pay tax whether or not your road is taxed. You cannot link provision of service to tax payment
That is the law
As an individual, if they zero in on you, no matter your postings on Nairaland, there is nothing you can do

My suggestion is that since they have come to Nairaland to campaign for tax payment, then let there be a thread which will be operated like a conference. Let all the VAIDS people (FIRS, Office of VP, Minister of Fin etc) join in (they can have one person responding on Nairaland) and let a team of Nairalanders be on the other side.

Nairaland should undertake to declare their assets and income and commit to getting others to do so. But the government must in return do
1, 2, 3, 4

And then the meeting should agree on how to enforce compliance by both sides

I believe collective negotiation is the only way to extract a promise from the government. Again, remember nobody can individually engage the government on tax matters if s/he is in defalut

I agree. However, you're missing a point here: Accountability! How, or better put, who (among the government officials) will be responsible for the mismanagement of previous years' tax payments? Are we just supposed to develop amnesia overnight for the several WRONGS done to our people across the nation? He who must judge, or as the case is may be: Collect tax, must come to the table with clean hands. Apples and Oranges.

To balance my comment, I must commend the FG on its fight against the elusive corruption; remember the good ole corruption that they've been fighting pre-1960. I've gotta commend them on that, really. BetaThings, ask yourself this question: Retrospectively, who would you place more trust in, to take your billionaire child to school, Evans or J.J Okocha? Also, would you let a fox watch over your chickens instead of a dog?
Still, I agree with some of your points there sha.

Hello, you are taxed on income generated. If you earn salary from your private firm, you already have tax deducted from your salary.Except you have other sources of income that you haven't declared.

Pls for someone who works wit private firms and has just savings, is the person still supposed to declare.

What is the rate to be taxed on the savings?

Thank u.

You are already taxed by your company before You get alert. The only issue is wether they pay the deduction to gov't. Cos many deduct and keep it in thier pockets. It is well.

Bro I got your point.

1. Did you bother to ask why tolls were scrapped during Obasanjo's regime?

Obasanjo wanted to increase petroleum price and do away with tolls
He jumped the gun and demolished toll plazas but he did not get approval for fuel price increase as he planned
He could not bring toll plazas back

room089:

2. Did we enjoy good roads when we paid tolls?
No
But the Lekki road in Lagos appears to be a good example that can be copied

3. Is there any difference between successive regimes THEN that misappropriated toll proceeds and the regime we have now in terms of administration and management?

room089:

4. Hope you know concessionaires will be allow to wade in; you think they will fare any better?
Actually concessionaires are easier to harass than government

room089:

What happened in the electricity sector should be an eye opener here!
The economics of the two sectors are different
There are DISCOs, GENCOs and transmission companies with different and conflicting interests
There are private sector interests actively praying for (and actively working to ensure?) the failure of the electricity sector
Private sector want good roads
There are not many conflicting interests in the road sector

room089:

Just take it or leave it: government has the capacity to be fixing the roads without the re-introduction of tolls. Even if we pay tolls, they won't fix our roads unless God arrests our leaders. Where a system is not working, nothing works.
I think we need to arrest ourselves first
Can we unite?
IPOB members could not unite the SE against the election coming up in Nov
If the masses cooperate, the government is a goner!

He should ask for his tax clearance certificate (TCC)
If the tax deducted was not remitted to the Internal Revenue Service {IRS}, he will not get a TCC from the IRS and he will discover that his employer has been in default.
The employer will be in big trouble

I share your concern about accountability
What we seem not agree upon is the how
We cannot just criticise them and leave the thread (this is what they want - feeling of helplessness)

We should think and think and think of how to engage them and hold them accountable
We cannot afford to give up
