Good Day, NairaLander.

WHO AM I

My Dad is from Republic of Benin whose name I'm using as my Surname in all my documents. My mum is a Nigerian from Oyo state precisely where I was born and made.
As I was told Dad disappeared when I was 9yrs Old leaving my 3 siblings and I behind for my Mum to cater for alone.

The Bottom Line now is I'm in dare need of STATE OF ORIGIN CERTIFICATE which is part of the Higher Institution of Learning I'm aspiring to study requirement for ADMISSION this year. And I've gone to my Mother's Local Govt to claim it, but on getting there I was denied the right . They said my Surname( TOSSHUE) doesn't sound like a Nigerian name which is true therefore I should go back to my unknown Father's land. I got confused and ashamed because I don't know my father's background, nobody knows where he is now not even, my Mother.
I was born in Yoruba land, my Mother's home.

PLEASE BROTHERS, WHAT IS THE WAY OUT??
( YOUR SALIET ADVISE IS NEEDED SIR & MA. A brother is confused)

I have waited for Four solid years at home seeking for Admission not because I'm not intelligent but because of school financial requirements that I could not meet.
Now that I think I'm ready to go for it I don't want my IDENTITY to forfeit my Education pursuit. I'm getting older .
time waits for nobody.

Do a change of name. If you're in Lagos, go to the Ikeja high court and do a change of name. Change your surname to your Yoruba mother's surname. Then go to the Oyo state liason office in another neighboring state (not the one you went to), and get your Certificate of Origin. Tell them your dad is from Oyo, and when they ask you for your dad's LGA, lie and give them that of your mum. That's what my cousins (their Mum is from Delta, and their late dad from Sierra Leone) did, and they both got their Certificates of Origin.

So long as you can speak Yoruba fluently, you'll get a Certificate of Origin. And change the title of this post to: 'Pls Help: How Do I Get a Certificate of Origin?' so that if others have better ideas than the one I shared above, they'll click on the title and share it with you. The current title of 'Who am I?' sounds a bit childish, and very few people will click through. It was by pure accident that I clicked your post.

I can't be more grateful for your comment. I really appreciate it.

If I change my Surname. What will happen to my credentials where the name appears?

When you do a change of name, all documents bearing your former name remain valid. For example if you're a muslim who converts to Xtianity and changes his name to a Christian name, all documents bearing your former Muslim name will still remain valid, so long as you present those documents together with your Name Change certificate.

So just be sure to present your change of name paper/certificate together with any document bearing your previous name wherever such document is required (embassy, university, bank, etc). Though I would advice you don't take any doc with your previous name with you to your State Liaison Office, so they don't start querying you about the foreign name on the documents. If they require a birth cert, then swear an Affidavit at the court and take it to them.
