Today Wednesday 11 October 2017 is observed globally as WORLD OBESITY DAY . It is observed with the view of promoting practical solution to end the global obesity crisis. World Obesity day is organized by the World Obesity Federation which is a non profit organization with official relations with the World Health Organization . The aim of the organization states “to lead and drive global efforts to reduce, prevent and treat obesity “.

The first observance took place in 2015. This year’s theme is “treat obesity now and avoid the consequences later”. This is aimed at encouraging investment in the treatment services to support people affected by obesity, early intervention to improve the success of treatment and prevention to reduce the need for treatment.

In view of this we have carefully listed the main causes of obesity. This is part of our awareness campaign for the treatment and prevention of obesity.
First, what is OBESITY?
Simply put Obesity is a chronic condition defined by excess amount of body fat.

Now let’s look at the causes of obesity.

Causes Of Obesity

Genetics : If one or both parents are obese then a person is more likely to develop obesity.

Overeating : Overeating leads to weight gain especially if the diet is high in fat or sugar.

Physical inactivity : People who are active burn more calories than sedentary people.

Medication : Certain medications are associated with weight gain which is a leading cause of obesity.

Psychological factors : Most people eat excessively in response to emotions such as boredom, sadness, stress or anger.

Diseases : Certain diseases like hypothyroidism are contributors to obesity.

Social issues : Lack of money to purchase healthy foods, walk or exercise can cause obesity.
