Although most lumps aren’t breast cancerous, any unusual changes to the breasts should be thoroughly checked as soon as possible. If they finds a lump on examination, they should routinely refer you to be seen by a hospital specialist. Breast lump are commonly benign (non-cancerous), most of which are harmless and are sometimes caused by hormonal changes that occur in a woman’s life, this might be during menstrual cycle. Types of benign breast lump are: Fibroadenoma – a firm lump that moves around easily in the breast and is more common in younger women Breast cyst – are smooth, firm fluid-filled lumps mostly seen in women aged 30 to 60 Breast abscess – it’s a painful collection of pus that forms under the skin of the breast, it can be as a result of a bacterial infection Assessing your breasts It’s important to assess your breast regularly so you can identify any possible problems in your breasts and get them checked out as soon as possible. This means getting used to your normal breast, and examining them regularly for any changes. It is important that women of 50 years and above should attend breast cancer screening. And a mammogram should be carried after every three early to check for any early signs of cancer.
