This is a follow up on a story about a guy from whom Police extorted N300,000 from. The accusation then was that, the guy was into Yahoo Yahoo. Aliyu Giwa (The Nigeria Police Force Assistant PRO) investigated the case and shared the outcome on Twitter via his handle @aleeygiwa Its long but worth the read.
1. Like it is said “Friends, cherish one another’s hopes &they’re kind to one another’s dreams.”But some friends are enemies within. I’ve a story!
2. Before I start to talk! Pls my peeps we’re all learning from each other’s experiences.
3. The story went viral on SM and the story was “Police officers arrested Mr.A for no good reason and collected the sum of 300k from him.”
4. I sent a private massage to the blog that posted it “Pls can I have the contact of the complaints?”..... Good enough I got a reply.
5. I was sent the handle &email of the guy that made the thread. So I reached out to him “Sir I saw ur post, pls can u kindly tell me wat happened”
6. And his reply was “Two days ago my Friend was beaten mercilessly, becos he refused to comply with them and was taken to the Police station”
7. ......”When we got to the Police station they told us that there was a petition against him”
8. So I asked him “who wrote the petition against him and what was his offense?” His reply “they refused to show us the petition.”
9. ..... “they only told us that he was involve in some sort of fraud that worth about 25k dollars”
10. While I was chatting with the guy who sent the post to the Blog, someone just sent me a direct message “Good morning Sir, I am Mr.A....
11. I am the guy that was arrested by your men, I learnt that u are trying to get in touch the me.
12. Immediately I got that, I switched to Mr.A. I replied him “Oh great sir, so sorry about that ugly incident, pls what really happened?”
13. He reply was “Sir, thanks for reaching out and God bless you. To start with, it wasn’t 300k they collected from me it was 100k they collected
14. And sincerely there was a petition filed against me, but it was an old case which I had already settled while I was in the USA.
15. It was about a transaction my friend asked me to help him with, which later became more like a fraud at my own ends in the State (USA).
16. My account was blocked & all. To cut the long story short. I replied him “Pls meet me at the station tomorrow, so we can trash things out”
17. Fast forward the next day. Mr.A called me, saying “Pls sir I wouldn’t be able to make it today. But will try come the following day.”
18. Me: it’s okay, tomorrow it is! So I decided to go meet with the Officer in Charge of the department that arrested Mr.A.
19. I got there.... Me: Good morning sir (Saluted and banged my foot). Oc: How’re doing Giwa! Deputy PPRO! Me: fine sir, just have one small issue
20. That I need to draw ur attention to.
21. Oc: What happened Giwa? Me: it’s about a case and it has gone viral on SM. Oc: Okay! Me: Oga, some of ur men arrested one guy (Mr.A)...
22. And according to the report they collected the sum of 300k & rough handled the him mercilessly. Oc: Giwa Pls did he tell u name of the IPO?
23. Me: Yes Sir, IPO Z is his name. Immediately the OC called the IPO via his phone. Oc: please come meet me in my office.
24. IPO came in. IPO: Good morning sir!! Oc: Yes! What’s good about the morning? Which case r u doing, that u collected 300k from the suspect?
25. IPO: I am not handling any case like that Sir. (Looking all scared) Oc: Okay!! call me all ur other team members now!!!
26. So the IPO called his team members. The Oc asked them who’s the most senior officer among them?
27. The most senior officer (Inspector) answered! Then the OC: which case are you doing? And which one did u collect 300k from the suspect?
28. Inspr: we didn’t collect 300k from any suspect. Don’t know what you are talking about Sir. The OC just faced me and he said....
29. Giwa please call the complaint of the case. Me: He said he can’t make it today. But will be available tomorrow by God grace.
30. Oc: Okay then, when he’s around bring him straight to my office. I’ll surely deal with these men! I dnt accept all these uncivilized act here.
31. Later that day my phone rang! Good enough Mr.A is calling.... Me: Hello Sir Mr.A: Hello Sir, how’re u doing? So sorry I couldn’t make it today
32. Me: Oh it’s no problem Bro! I really understand. Mr.A: Sir, I am scared of coming becos my friend said I shouldn’t come. Me: why please?
33. Mr.A: I don’t really know why he keep insisting I shouldn’t come. That they will change the story on me and blah blah! Me: Pls don’t mind him.
34. Just come & let see the officer in charge of the department. U are fine my brother! We can’t let this go!
35. If we keep avoiding such, trust me the system will only get worst.Bro, Having a great policing system in our country is a collective effort.
36. After the 22mins convo, he agreed to come around without his friend (the guy posted the story on SM).
37. The next day!!!
38. The guy came around!! His face was swollen and bruises all over him. Tbh, I feel terrible when I saw it.
39. So I took him straight to the OC’s office. Me: Good monring sir (saluted and banged my foot) Oc: Giwa how are u and where is the guy?
40. Me: here’s the guy Sir! Mr.A: Good morning Sir. Oc: How’re u doing my brother! What happened to ur face? That was the 1st qstn the OC asked.
41. Mr.A: I was beaten. Oc: by who?? (Angrily) Mr.A: by the police officers that arrested me 2 days ago Oc: who & wats the name of the officer?
42. Mr.A: IPO Z! Oc: ah! But Giwa u were here yesterday when he denied to have such case. Me: Yes Sir! Oc: These men are terrible set of people.
43. Long story short! Called the IPO & his team! They couldn’t deny knowing him... after loads of talk! All of a sudden they started begging!
44. Oc: call me the SO (Station officer)! SO: Sir, u sent for me! OC: put them in cell and later take them to provost.
45. Oc: wait oh! what about the money y’all collect? Inspr: its 100k he gave us, not 300k. OC: U didn’t just collect money! U robbed him!
46. OC: I wouldn’t take that!! Never!! I will make sure y’all face the disciplinary board! They started begging! The guy!
47. Long story short! Oc: where is the petition of Mr.A case, that you are working on? IPO: let me go bring it!
48. He brought the Petition after like 35mins! Hmmmmm! Oc: why take you that long? IPO: The place I kept it was locked, that’s why Sir.
49. Oc collected the petition and read it out! and mentioned the name of the petitioner (The person who wrote the petition against him)!
50. When the OC mention the name of the petitioner! Omo! Na so Mr.A screamed! Oga that’s my friend who posted the story on SM! Hmmmmm!
51. Then the IPO opened up! Plenty things really! Wouldn’t be able to say it all on here! Will just state few.
52. The friend told the Officers that the guy is a GeeBoy(yahoo yahoo) and when he will be coming to Nigeria.
53. When Mr.A arrived Nigeria,he took his friends out,lodge them in an Hotel & they cruised round the city! (Omo the friend told the IPO every)
54. He told the police that he just bought his mother a car and details of Mr.A acct balance self.
55. He was the one that sent a text to the Police men that they were in a spot and soon be leaving! Thats the day he was arrested.
56. Now this is where wahala dey! The Friend wanted a share from the money Police collected from Mr.A! So he thought they collected 300k.
57. The Friend even brought a Solicitor to negotiate the terms and conditions of his bail.
58. According to Mr.A, the solicitor at some point was asking for 1million Naira for his services!
59. At that point he said “I suspected some irregularities.” So he decided to call one of his uncle who spoken to some Policemen at that dept.
60. Thats was when they agreed to accept the 100k. Mr.A also said “my friend keep asking him ‘how much dem collect for ur hand?’
61. That’s when I told him 300k! Abeg long story short!
62. The 3 Policemen we’re detained for 3 weeks, faced disciplinary committee and were DEMOTED.
63. Mr.A friend was arrested & charged to court for False information.
64. The parent of Mr.A’s friend wanted to settle the matter out of court. The truth is we have done our job & it has been charged to court.
65. We no longer have a saying on that.
