''Morning'' symbolises the beginning of a new day. It symbolises that a person is prepared and inspired for any tasks or challenges for the new day. It also means u are refreshed,re-energised and inspired for a new task or emergency. All the above are expected mindset of a military man. Greeting ''good morning'' is a way of re-echoing the above behavioural pattern or mindset.

Morning Sir is a military way of greeting each other. It only being use when you just seeing your superior for the first time for the day ( either morning, afternoon or night), after dat good day is allowed.

Not that you will see ur superior in the morning " morning sir" and in the afternoon too " morning sir" I think is wrong.

Well I need someone to correct me if am also wrong cause am not a soldier neither do I hav e any family member doing the job. But only got to know the little based on my observation about the force cause I love the Nigeria Army.

The second comment above answers it all. I was confused as a little kid back then when my dad greets his superiors "morning sir" in d afternoon and i wouldn't know whether to greet in d same way. Until I asked and get an explanation similar to the second post above.

I believe this whole "morning sir greeting" started in the north. In the ppa where i served, children and even adults greet me good morning even in the night. A Mallam even told me "safe journey" after our discussion and i began to wonder if i told him i'll be travelling.

Its as a result of some of them not being able to communicate in english and their over emphasies on hausa language that caused it(remember we have a large number of northerners in the military)

Back then in command secondary school, we greeted all our military men "moorrn sir!" not "morning sir".

Well wen i was a soldier in brigade of guards and while in training in depot. We were told dat der is no noon or evening in d military but morning. Dat u don't sleep at all. Even at night wen d full moon is out for all to c self u say morning sir.

But NDA changed all dat!
We were told dat its because our forefathers believed ders no evening nor rest in d military.
Dat we should change dat fact. But for where!!!! We still de greet morning sir for night. Me i dey do am well well self. So long it has nothing to do with loyalty nor discipling.

Advance countries, were the military are highly professionals, you will often hear them greeting each other by their ranks. E.g.
* Good morning Captain
* Good morning lieutenant
* Good morning sergeant. And so on...

But the Nigerian military, most especially the lower officers, has been psychological trained and programme as servants in all ramifications.
You'll see them carrying their bosses wife's handbag and umbrella as part of their work description.
