Hello People,

There’s a problem I have run into a couple of times and it’s a problem I have heard other people talk to me about.

WHERE ARE ALL THE GOOD DEVELOPERS IN ABUJA?

You see, I have been in Abuja on and off for a year plus and I have not met any good developer so far. I am not talking about the guys who download templates off Themeforest and say they are web developers , and I am not talking about entrepreneurs who just want to build the next Jumia or another Nigerian version of Uber or some other tech unicorn to cash out on.

No, these are not the guys I am talking about.. I am talking about the real geeks who actually love to code and are not afraid to hack under the hood of their chosen programming language(s) to gain actual readability of that language.. I’m talking about the Jeff deans(google him, he’s a legend) who compilers don’t warn, they warn compilers…I’m talking about the guys who are less bothered about things like business plans, product/market fit, fund sourcing and the likes… I’m talking about the guys who just want want to work on cool projects and get paid for it…. I’m talking about the core developers.

Where are you guys because i’m sure you must exist.

It pains me every time some one calls me up with a great project and he/she is looking for developers to work with and I have to tell the person to outsource the work on freelance sites to somebody half way across the world when I know there must be guys in this Abuja who can perfectly execute the project. Yes, I know there are a couple of meetups and conferences that happen from time to time but they happen too infrequently to matter in my opinion and besides the few conferences I’ve been to were filled mostly with people who could talk the talk but you could tell, would not be able to walk the walk.

If there is already a vibrant community of developers and real tech geeks in Abuja, i would really love to know about , so if tomorrow i need someone to build a progressive web app or some one skilled in java, i would know where to look. But if such a community doesn’t exist, lets begin to build one and it would be great if we start putting ideas together on how best to build it in a scalable way not for profit but for ourselves.

I Know Exactly what you mean.

I should also let you know that Big time Programming is not a Solo effort. Many of Us can code, and there are plenty of Us in this Abuja, i can tell you that. my Company Infinity Creations have a Network of these guys, but like i said, when it all comes down to creating the next Facebook or Twitter, it has to be a Combined effort and i can say that we can achieve that today.

That is really what matters, not how "Jeff Deans" a person is. Most people like that are usually lonely, Depressed, or don't have a life other than to Code. I say!..... what kinda life is that?!...... We all aspire to be Guru's don't get me wrong, but not in a way that you become a slave to Coding.

Moderation, Team work and of-course Proper funding for the Task is all that's needed to Make us and the Client Happy in the Long run.

Thank you,

I totally agree with you that building something great is usually not a solo effort because there are just too many moving parts at play not just programming part, even the programing aspect alone is too broad for one person to come and claim superman(even the jeff dean guy doesn't work alone, he has a teams of people around him).

My point is this : Lets say I want to start a self driving car company or an Augmented Reality company, where would i go to look for developers that would be able to work on such a project. As you know writing code for an AR device is not the same as building an ecommerce site or writing a normal android app,one needs to have(or be willing to have ) depth in whatever language that is been used. It really doesn't matter to me if they are even capable of pulling something like that off now, what matters to me is the willingness to want to get to that level.

Like I said earlier, I truly believe these kind of guys exist but there is now way of finding them because if today i post on nairaland that i need developers to work on writing a custom OS for an IOT device, it would be a miracle if i get two people by the end of the year. Most likely scenario is that the thread would go dead.

That's why I believe we need to start building a real community that is not just entrepreneur focused because entrepreneurs are like the brains, they know where to go but they can't get there alone without the legs and the legs are the developers, the sys admins, the network guys etc.

Until we can get a vibrant community together of this "legs", we will be limited in what type of tech we can produce from abuja. So Usman lets all start putting our heads together on how we can actually get this community up and running.
