UNILAG And MTU Set The Record In The Field Of Geoscience by macdongenius: 2:59pm On Nov 26, 2017
Nigeria top Universities jointly hosted the European Association of geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) first ever webinar lecture in Nigeria at the Mountain Top University. The lecture was delivered through a live connection interaction from a hyper-tech internet device which provided seamless communication between lecturer and audience. The world class facility put in place by the Management of Mountain Top University was lorded by all present at the occasion.
The webinar lecturer was hosted in Mountain Top University on Friday 24th November, 2017 and the guest lecturer was José M. Carcione who is Presently, the Director of Research at the “Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale (OGS)” (former “Osservatorio Geofisico Sperimentale”) in Trieste.
The whole event was initiated and followed up by Prof. Elijah Ayolabi, Vice Chancellor Mountain Top University and Mr. Ambrose M Ogbuike, EAGE Program Officer from the University of Lagos. The event was highly attended by over 500 delegates from across Nigeria Universities, oil and gas companies and information technology sectors. In his speech, the Vice chancellor of mountain Top University, Prof. Elijah Ayolabi eulogies EAGE for the lecture tour, commended the delegates and challenge all to take geoscience in Nigeria to the next level.
The lecture briefly outlines the physics and simulation of wave propagation in anisotropic, anelastic and porous media, including the analogy between acoustic waves (in the general sense) and electromagnetic waves. The emphasis is on geophysical applications for seismic exploration, but researchers in the fields of earthquake seismology, rock physics, and material science – including many branches of acoustics of fluids and solids (acoustics of materials, non-destructive testing, etc.) – may also find the presentation useful. I illustrate the use of seismic, ultrasonic and electromagnetic modeling, with a brief account of the numerical algorithms for computing the wavefields, including applications in the field of geophysical prospecting, seismology, environmental sciences and rock physics.
