The Survival (A Short Story By Nimiwrites) by NimiWrites(f): 11:04pm On Dec 02, 2017
A story of a close-knitted family bonded by love and always united no matter the circumstances. There comes a situation that threatens to pull down the family's wall of love, happiness and unity.
Are they strong enough to survive this great challenge? Are they prepared to be self-dependent no matter how ugly the situation is? Will they fall apart eventually?

Episode One

Blossom
It was going to be another boring day, what I had thought would be a brief time out and break from my writing had turned out to be something else. I had decided to accompany momma to shop for some groceries and beverages for the house thinking we would head home immediately after shopping but ran out of luck when we saw Momma's best friend, Aunty Lucy while still shopping. God! At that point in time, I knew it was going to be a long day.

Momma was a social bee, always busy planning one occasion or the other, her profession as an Event planner and Interior decorator suited her, she was one of the best in the country. She worked hand-in-hand with my dad who was in charge of the administration of the company. The company's name is the "Whites Events Company" (W.E.C.), named after the family surname-White. Clients booked ahead for the company's service months before the D-day of their events, hence, she travelled a lot. She has a whole lot of friends and there was hardly a free weekend for her, except, of course, Sundays, which is a strictly work-free day. Another work free day for my parents was Wednesdays, you would agree with me that there is hardly an event that is scheduled for a Wednesday except on rare occasions.

"Blossy!", A snap of fingers across my face brought me back to reality, it was then I realised Momma has said something to me only to find out that as is of my habit since Crystal travelled out of town, I had spaced out.

"Spaced out again", momma said curling her lips at me.
"I'm sorry momma, what did you say?"
"I said we will be going to Lucy's house from here, I've got some things to trash out with her", She answered walking out the door of the mall.
"But I thought we were gonna go home from here straight away", I grumbled already itching for my writing pad as I felt ideas hurrying into my head from all angles.
"No Blossy, we are going together, if I should allow you go now, you'll be the only soul inside that big house, all alone by yourself, oh!, no no no, no way that's happening, dear daughter", She said adamantly with me walking behind her towards the car. I really hoped I would be able to convince her to allow me go home, I can take care of myself.

Laura

I watched as blossy argued with me on going home to be alone all by herself in that big mansion, I might be a busy woman but my family comes first before any other thing. Blossom's twin brother, Crystal was out of town to attend the youth camp programme going on in our church. They should have gone together but unfortunately, Blossom fell ill a day to the D-day. I practically had to force him to go alone much to Blossy's unhappiness, she insisted to go with him even with her ill health, but trust me, I would have none of it.

That was two days back, the twins had got to learn how to live their lives independently, they've got to learn to be self-dependent and not depend on each other, all the time. They are so fond of themselves to the extent that they cannot perform their duties thoroughly without helping one another, whereas, they are almost through with high school. Anyway, I had a plan already, one I know they won't have any choice but to comply to.

"I can take care of my myself, momma" , she argued.
"Blossom, we are going together whether you like it or not, so now get your butt into the car while we wait for Lucy" I said. She sighed and walked ahead of me with shoulders slumped towards the car, obviously, she had accepted defeat. I was bent on spending the whole day with her not out of my sight, I knew she would still come up with two other excuses on why she should go home, I already outsmarted her at that, though.

My initial plan was to head home immediately from the mall, but as it was, it seemed we would not be home anytime soon. Lucy was always in charge of fashion outfits, decoration materials and equipment for every event I planned. Somehow, there was a mix up of some outfits we needed to sort out as soon as possible. I was more than glad that I had decided to take Blossy's medication and a couple of inhalers.

Episode Two

I felt really helpless and defeated as I sat in momma's car at the back seat while she chatted away with Aunty Lucy at the driver's and passenger's seat respectively. An idea popped up in my head, I mentally slapped myself for not having thought of such a good reason to go home before then.

"Momma, how will I take my medications if I'm going to be following you?", I asked thinking that would do the trick but her response made me feel like crying out my eyes.
"Your medications are in my bag, Blossom, and a couple of your inhalers just incase you want to try that excuse too, I'm pretty sure there is one in your pocket as well, you don't have to worry your pretty little head, dear.", She had said.
Oh no!, I cried out mentally, it took all my will power and self control to restrain myself from crying. I just wanted to be alone and just continue sulking. I had been upset ever since Momma forced Crystal to go to the youth camp without me, at least, we can always resume there late. To make matter worse, she would not allow me to go and join him saying I must recover totally.

Finally, we arrived at Aunty Lucy's house and had lunch first. I decided there was no need sulking over spilt milk, momma's mind was made up already and there was nothing I could do or say that possibly change her mind. I started to think of what I could do to make the day a little interesting for myself but to my utmost dismay, I realised I had forgotten my mobile at home. I was frustrated, I could have browsed the internet, watch videos or better still, play games. Worse still, I did not bring my writing pad along with me. I missed Crystal so much, if the two of us were all alone in the wilderness, we were never going to get bored. What a day!

Crystal

Youth Camp was the best, it would have been much more interesting if Blossybel was here with me, I felt my heart go out to her at the thought of how lonely she would feel. I also felt lonely, but being surrounded by friends and lots of funny people helped numbed the loneliness. Blossom had to be replaced in the drama and choreography units, I had lost count of the number of people who had asked after her, we were known to be inseparable, she almost cried out her eyes on the day I travelled.

She had fallen ill a day to the D-day, I insisted I was not going again but momma refused much to my chagrin, I was left with no choice and to be sincere, it was a very lonely journey. Neither of us had friends we could call best, although, we had a number of casual friends. I felt like crying on the first night of camp, at that point of thought, I chuckled.

Crying was Blossybel's talent and it led to the biggest fight of the century. I really had to fight her for always crying unnecessarily, she cried at the slightest provocation or petty insults thrown her way, even in school, so embarrassing! It became so irritating and I knew something had to be done about it even if I did not know how, hence, I was very happy when an opportunity presented itself. Dad had promised the family a picnic at the beach on a particular weekend. It had been a long time we all got together just to have fun, Blossybel was particularly excited and looked forward to the picnic.

On the D-day, everybody was dressed with swimsuits and extra clothes packed. Momma and Blossy we're busy packing food, fruits and other edibles when dad received an urgent call about a deal in the company which needed to be attended to immediately. Blossom who had been very optimistic and excited about the picnic burst into tears as soon as they drove out, no amount of consoling whatsoever would calm her down, I was disappointed myself and here was I consoling my twinee, who will console me too

She suddenly started wheezing and held her chest, I checked her Jean pockets for her inhaler, it was empty, I turned her backpack upside down still nothing! Her inhaler was nowhere in sight, I was becoming angrier each passing moment and even more confused, my mind was blank, I scrambled around the living room, searching frantically for an inhaler but none was in sight. By that time, her wheezing was gradually becoming more violent, she had started gasping for breath, what was I gonna do? I can't afford to lose my twin sister and only sibling, God, help me!

Concluding part of Episode Two

Sweating profusely and kneeling helplessly and scared by her side, I thought of where she could have kept the inhalers and soon found myself racing up the stairs to her room. I flung the door open to behold a pack of inhalers lying peacefully on the bed with a handkerchief beside it. Apparently, she had forgotten to take it probably in her excitement while packing for the picnic. I grabbed it and ran back downstairs just on time to hold it to her mouth, her eyes were bloodshot already and I couldn't help but thank God for finding the inhaler before it was too late.

It took minutes before she could calm down, I was boiling with rage the whole time, but her health was more important. Her unnecessary cries led to the attack in the first instance and as if that was not enough, her inhaler was miles away, she should know better than get careless with her inhaler , if she had landed in the hospital, I would never forgive myself. Immediately I was sure she was relieved, I gave her a piece of my mind, shouted and screamed at her before storming to my room and slammed the door behind me. The fact that an asthmatic attack that could have been totally avoided happened to her because of some childish tears set me on edge. To be sincere, I was scared when she started gasping for breath and I still could not lay my hands on any inhaler worse still, she was in no position to talk. I was shaken and terrified, it took minutes before I could stop trembling.

In less than an hour, my anger had vanished into thin air, I almost ran out of my room to go and check up on her but restrained myself. That was the opportunity I had been looking to teach her a lesson, and now, one had presented itself, I was not going to ruin it. I was determined to stop that naughty, stupid, babyish and child-like habit of hers. For Christ's sake, we are grown up adults, not babies anymore.

Episode three

Blossom

Being the only child of our parents, we were very close and inseparable. Just three days away from him felt like hell on earth, or a toddler with no one to play with. As far I can remember, we had never been separated for more that a day, hence, it was challenging that I had to be apart from him for a whole week. Gosh!

Apart from that, youth camp was always fun, we get to study the bible in groups, learn more amazing things about Jesus, worship and praise him, catch up with old friends, make new great friends, not to mention early morning exercises, games and many more. I so much miss Crystal and the youth camp out. My mind drifted to the biggest fight I and Crystal ever had, he did not speak to me for five days. The difference between the duration of that fight and now was that I got to see him everyday even if he would not talk to me.

Dad and Momma had planned to take the family on a picnic to the beach only for them to cancel it at the last minute due to an emergency at the company. I felt my heart break into a thousand pieces as when I heard the car driven out of the compound. Crystal would say I acted childish but what could I do when I could not help myself. I burst into tears immediately and cried hysterically as if I just lost somebody dear to me. No matter how much Crys tried to console me, the tears would not stop flowing.

Before I could say jack, I started wheezing, my chest was on fire, I felt Crystal's hand in my pocket, he wanted to fetch my inhaler, I was surprised when he couldn't find it there. The wheezing became violent, I felt I was gradually loosing consciousness, my vision blurred from the tears in my eyes, I could not think straight, the pain in my chest was becoming unbearable, meanwhile, I felt crystal shouting,

"where the hell did you keep your inhaler?", I could not say a word, it was simply impossible, I thought I was going to die when I started gasping for breath, I was about to give up when I felt Crys put the inhaler in my mouth and I began to inhale it, feeling more relieved with each puff. By the time I was totally relieved, I opened my mouth to thank him bit the rage that was visible in his eyes kept my mouth shut. I could tell he was angry, I've never seen him like that before, and it hurts to know I had triggered that side of him, he hardly got angry except when pushed to the wall, I was a living witness to that. My intense crying triggered the attack, hence, I knew my offence, he had severally warned me about crying at the slightest provocation but I wouldn't listen.

"What the heck is wrong with you, Blossom?", he had said angrily. Crystal never called me by my name, its either he called me Blossybel, Blossydearie, Blossyhon or simply Blossy, never Blossom. Calling me Blossom at that point in time gave away just how mad he was at me. I did not need an Einstein to tell me I had pushed him to the wall.

"Just tell me, the heck! What on earth is wrong with you? You wanna kill yourself cause of some stupid picnic, hun!, I've told you to stop crying at the slightest chance you've got, must you cry? And besides, its just a picnic, for goodness sake papa and momma already promised we'll do this some other time so, just tell me the reason for your damn tears" I could smell rage, he was boiling.

"For pete's sake, you're an asthmatic patients, Blossy, and you know it, you know crying is not good for your health, yet, you've turned it into your hobby. You can cry all you want, damn you! I don't care, just consider your sound health for once", He stopped to catch his breath. I was crying softly and silently now with my inhaler clutched with my palm.

"I don't even think you love your life, Blossom, how could you not have any inhaler within reach, you know better than to...", He stopped, probably short of words, breathing heavily, he continued, "You know what, I'm done talking or shouting on you about this, suit yourself!"

To be continued...

Blossom's P.O.V. Continues...
....suit yourself!"

With that, he picked up his backpack lying carelessly on the ground, stormed up the stairs into his room and slammed the door behind him such that I was startled for a moment before I continued crying.

I suddenly stopped crying, mentally scolding myself for still doing the same thing that had almost landed me in the hospital, in order to show just how sorry I was, I ran upstairs, washed my tears-stained face and went straight to his room in readiness to apologise.

"Crystal", I called, knocking on his door, there was no answer. I called out to him for no less than two minutes before I decided to start apologising immediately, I knew he was listening to me even if he would not acknowledge me. "Crys, I'm sorry, I won't cry unnecessarily anymore, please , open up..." still no response. It dawned on me that he was probably angry to the extent that he did not want to see my face. Depressed and Helpless, I trudged down to my room, layed on my bed and not long after, the sweet hand of sleep enveloped me with thoughts of how to reconcile with my brother on my mind.

End of Episode three.

So help me God, Episode 4 comes up tomorrow evening.
