Back in my secondary school days, a class mate of mine who was born in the North told me that Hausas called "Inyamiri" because from the Igbo phrase "Nyem mmiri" which means 'give me water'.

I however do not think that "Inyamiri" came from the civil war as many people who survived the war such as parents have told me that Hausas were calling Igbos by this name even before the war

Fake story. The word has been in use in the north even before the civil war. It actually means give me water but it came from Igbo traders in the north even before independence. Those igbos were the first people to package drinking water in small packs for sale at a small price. It became a big business in the north. When the Hausa natives came to buy from them they said yamiri instead of Yem mmiri and the name eventually stuck. It is not derogatory, it's just a way of describing Igbos in the north just like Hausa's are called aboki in the west or Yorubas are called ofe mmanu in the east
