The United States Ambassador to the United Nations , Nikki Haley , announced Sunday night that the American government has reduced its contribution to the U .N .’ s annual budget by $ 285 m.

The Christmas Eve statement reads in full :

“Today , the United Nations agreed on a budget for the 2018 - 2019 fiscal year . Among a host of other successes, the United States negotiated a reduction of over $ 285 m off the 2018 - 2019 final budget .

“In addition to these significant cost savings , we reduced the UN’ s bloated management and support functions , bolstered support for key U .S . priorities throughout the world , and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system .

“The inefficiency and overspending of the United Nations are well known . We will no longer let the generosity of the American people be taken advantage of or remain unchecked . This historic reduction in spending – in addition to many other moves toward a more efficient and accountable UN – is a big step in the right direction .

“While we are pleased with the results of this year ’ s budget negotiations , you can be sure we’ ll continue to look at ways to increase the UN ’ s efficiency while protecting our interests , ”

said Ambassador Haley . Haley ’ s statement comes after the U .N . voted to condemn the United States for President Donald Trump’ s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel .

The resolution, backed by nations with long records of extreme human rights abuses , passed 128- 9 last Thursday . Haley immediately responded by threatening to reduce America’ s U. N . funding .

“The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation, ” Haley told the assembly in New York City .

“We will remember it when we are called upon to once again make the world ’ s largest contribution to the United Nations and we will remember it when so many countries come calling on us, as they so often do , to pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit .”

The new deal for the 2018- 2019 fiscal year is $ 285 m less than the world body ’ s staggering $ 5 .4 bn budget for fiscal year 2016- 2017 .

The same US that is deploying troops around China because they see them becoming number 1economy in the world, they are too stewpid to know that the more they withdraw from the world the more influence they loose all because of a welfare state that lives on handout.

It'll hurt America the more in the long run coz there are other nations/blocs ready and eager to fill that void at the U.N and in effect wield more influence on the geopolitical stage. E.g, China, Russia, Germany-led EU. These folks are not doing badly economically/militarily and are very ambitious.

The US have been practically begging other nations to contribute their quota to sustain the UN for decades, but it has always fell on deaf ears.
If other nations are willing to replace them, then why is the US still funding the UN up to 22%?

Even in NATO the US have been pleading for other nations to rise to their financial responsibilities, but nations don't want to spend if they can avoid it.

This is Trump pleading with NATO allies to increase their financial and personell contribution to NATO, which the US is funding up to 21%.

Now NATO is very critical to the security of western Europe from Russia. Even then , countries in NATO still heap the financial responsibility on the US.

Now if this Rich European countries cannot even fund their own integrated defense to American standard, is it the UN they will now fund?

The essence of the UN vote was not to make Trump reconsider his decision but to tell who so ever cares to listen that the world don't recognize Jerusalem as Isreal's capital.
