My Sister Lost Her Baby Soon After Child Birth. What Could Have Been Done? by pxjosh(m): 8:10am On Dec 31, 2017
My sister was supposed to deliver on the 29th of this month. Before mid day she wasn't experiencing any labor pain, she had to go to the hospital to wait.

Several times I called to know her welfare , I was told she has already started having contractions and soon to put to birth. I called hours later and I was told she was in labor already, and things were progressing smoothly.

I called few hours later and the status quo was that she was still in labor. I called later and she was still in labor, which I found to be surprising. I thought labor shouldn't normally take so long, and if she has such delayed labor they can either consider operation or something else can be done.

To my shock, I was told the baby died after birth because of delayed labor. I felt something should have been done to probably make the delivery process smoother or to keep the baby alive.

I feel so sad and depressed. Can this be due to poor handling /judgement on the part of the care givers? What could have been done? This was supposed to be her first child.

it could also be her fault and that is why its good first time mothers should have an experienced moms around them. for instance, some due date aren't real it's a plus or minus two weeks, secondly, maybe she was forced into labor when the baby is not even ready to come out yet. thirdly, maybe her pelvis is small. The care giver should have suggested CS cos prolonged labor makes the baby very weak and could lead to death. All in all, take good care of your sister by God's grace more babies will come

It could actually be due to fetal distress as in when the baby stays too long during labour (poor progress or obstructed labour), the baby goes into distress. When that happens, he passes his stool (meconium) into the mother's fluid, leading to intake of the stool containing fluid into the lungs.
This is a condition that is an emergency and if not promptly taken care of, can lead to death in the few mins to hours after delivery.
Sorry for your loss.

Thank you for your feedback. She's home now and recovering.

I don't know if you can drop one or two things that could help. Her tummy is still big, and she's having pains all over. She can barely even sit. My mum told me she was cut for the baby to come out.

Is there anything she could do to reduce the size of her tummy, apart from tying wrappers around her abdomen once in a while. She is also having milk let down and her breast is heavy. I know this would resolve on its own, but how long will it take to go back to normalcy.

Your feedback will be so much appreciated.

Oga calm down, pregnancy, labor and childbirth isnt a small issue.
Her doctor is supposed to give her instructions on postpartum care.
let her heal emotionally and physically first before tying stomach and all.

meanwhile, she should make sure theres no pain from the episiotomy(stitch) before tying as it can put undue pressire on it.naturally the pain shouldnt exceed 3 wks though some could last upto six weeks or more sef and make sure she takes her drugs promptly to promote faster healing.

Six wks is enough for physical healing but emotional,no.
Note that her recovery will depend on her body type and the support she will get from her partner/family.

hbot and birth asphyxia;

The baby suffered from birth asphyxia: Oxygen and, or blood deprivation during delivery.

Many babies die or end up with brain damage (cerebral palsy) because of this.

If the doctors and nurses have tried in vain to improve condition of the baby it would have been reasonable to refer to a hyperbaric oxygen therapy (hbot) unit. This would have been their last card.

The action of hbot would prevent or drastically reduce brain damage. There would be early discharge from the hospital. It is very cost effective on the long-run.

I am advicing every health professional and care givers to take advantage of this therapy.

HBOT works where other measures fail.

Good to hear she's doing better, as for the tummy she needs good hot water massage and continuous drink, she's not supposed to take anything cold now so that all the blood inside would flush out, as for the breast milk, the hospital is supposed her drugs to dry up the milk n reduce the pain. shey hospital gave her some postnatal drugs to use let her take the drugs well and if it gets worse let her go back to the hospital. As for the stomach it will go down gradually dnt worry

@pxjosh the best we can do here is to allay your fears as we have already been doing. She is already under the care of her doctors and we believe they mean well for her.
As I mentioned earlier, she must have experienced a traumatic birth, hence the pains she feels down there.
She had a surgical wound created to make the baby's passage easier. She prolly had other lacerations but I believe she would be fine.
The private area has an amazing healing rate as it is well supplied by blood vessels, thus within a week, healing would have been 70% complete. With pain killers , she would be just fine.
As per the big belly, it has already been suggested here , hot warm water massage with a towel would do the trick.
For the milk let down, that's normal for any woman who just put to bed. If she wasn't given specific drugs to stop it, she could manually express the breasts and also wear milk pads. In a little while (say 1-2wks), the milk would dry up since there is no baby to suckle them.
