Hydrocarbon fuel is a major  fire hazard in our society. Fuel ranging from Gas, gasoline, kerosene and diesel are highly combustible and their fire can be very destructive. The lighter hydrocarbon fuel such as the gas and gasoline can easily explode at high pressure or heat  and in the presence of naked fire. Many lives and properties have been lost due to poor  fuel handling.

In other to prevent fire hazard while using these fuel, the following safe method of fuel handling and storage should be followed.

Cooking Gas

Use  the right pressure tested cylinder to store your gas.
Do not drop your gas cylinder from a height.
Do not lift a cylinder from the cap.
Do not roll cylinder on the floor.
Do not refill your cylinder yourself, engage the service of a qualified technician.
Do not smoke while connecting the gas cylinder.
Store gas cylinder outside your building under a shed to protect it from sun and rain.
Store gas cylinder erect and  firmly strapped.
Use the right fittings for gas cylinder.
Do not allow children to operate the gas cooker.
Install gas testers in area of gas usage to alarm you in event of gas leakage.
Periodically test the connection for leakage with a soapy water but not with flame.
When cooking keep doors and windows open.
Do not place the hose on hot surface.
To ignite, light the match, put the flame on the burner then turn on the gas valve.
Ensure the valve is turned off after cooking.
If you will not be using the cylinder for a  long time, remove the regulator and seal the valve nozzle with the red safety cap provided.

Gasoline

Do not make phone call in the gasoline pump station or while handling it.
Do not store volumes more than 20 litres at a given time.
Store at about 50 feet from source of ignition. This means that you should it in your home.
Use the approved fuel can for storage.
