You took a good step, rather than waiting for the dream white collar job. I commend you for that, your labour will be rewarded.

Since your location is kinda sorted out and your target market is also determined. I think your greatest weapon would be price [and packaging i.e BE NEAT ]. Students love affordable things.
>Do you have any direct competitor in the school selling same product? If yes, find out how much she sells and how she sells.
>What's the population of the school? You need steady turnover.
>When schools are on holidays, what happens?
>Are you planning to make the puff puff and zobo yourself or would you outsource the production?
>Would it be cheaper to make yourself or not?

I really don't think comparative advantage should come in here. Those two things are pretty easy and cheap to make, you can handle it yourself [especially the zobo...the zobo can be made in different flavours, I hope you have good power supply and freezer]. That way labour is on you,and you'll have all the profit to yourself grin

Except the school is Atlantic Hall and the likes, those small table water containers will serve. You can buy them from fast foods at a little cost, or go to a wedding venue any Saturday with a sibling and pick yourself. Wash/sterilise properly please.

Puff puff doesn't need special packaging. It's just the good old puff puff abi? You can buy packets of straws and serviettes but don't spend too much on packaging at this initial stage, it affects your selling price [and it could undermine your profit].

Take note of whatever they constantly ask for and expand the products you offer.

With hardwork and good customer service, you rarely go wrong with food business. People must eat.

I wish you good luck. I love peppery puff puff too cheesy
so on point.best advice ever.

Been trying to get a job but it all failed. I was even working as a ticketer for brt. The stress, humiliation and pay is not worth it.
I went to school and also a graduate think I can do better!

I thought about this during the week and want to give it a trial. There are two public schools in my area which have their own vendors but I want to do something spectacular.

I want to sell puff puff filled with pepper and fish. (in form of samosa) then cold zobo to the schools. I need your brilliant ideas on how to package myself to win the market!

My plan is to visit those schools tomorrow and inform the principals about my intention to sell in the school premises so I can be permitted.

I need intelligent ideas to supercede those I met there. Please help!

Lalasticla.la I need your help to be liberated in this business. As being on Frontpage will bring more ideas. Thanks

Good idea. But why not look for a strategic position on that street. This will serve three purposes (1) You will still make sales if the schools are on holiday (2) You will have a wider customer base, as other people in that area can patronize you. (3) In case the principals say no. Good luck.

This is really helpful. GOD bless you dear.

I hope I can always mention you whenever I need help smiley

I will go to thr school tomorrow and beg the principal.

My kid brother attends the school and they sell so many things there including puff puff but the kind of packaging I want to bring in will be different and very delicious.

The basic thing is the packaging.

My mother knows how to fry puff puff she will help me for a start then I'll learn.

I have a freezer but no generator (mother disposed it) but I can get ice for the drinks.

Like how much do you think I can start with?

Sorry I missed this.
Like someone said, don't go begging, it makes you look vulnerable. Be confident in yourself and the service you want to provide.

Your kid brother should be able to tell how much the average student there, spends during break-time. That way you can know if you'll add assorted snacks.

Thanks to mumsy. Does she bake too? cheesy

Well, if you have the work tools already, that's frying pan, a transparent casing for the puffpuff, big cooler for your zobo...etc. It'll reduce your start up cost. I can't really tell the price of those things in commercial quantities, but they are kinda cheap. I spend just about N500 for zobo ingredients, the zobo itself, flavour, ginger and a small pineapple. I get up to 4 litres from that. I don't know the price of baking things, my sister buys that.

Just do a market survey and don't forget to update the thread.

Nice points, Poco. Very vital.

Op, from a consumer's point of view, I would advise that you concentrate more on the quality of your product itself than the packaging (especially early on, and for schools). Develop a good reputation for yourself by

1. Selling fresh goods: don't be like all these joints that one has to time in cycles in order to get pastries that aren't stale. Some vendors have adopted the method of producing on demand right in front of the customer (especially waffles and cakes). It guarantees the customer that the items are fresh and also hygienically prepared. And for you, it can regulate production so that you do not over-supply, and afterwards try to sell day-old puff-puff the next day.

2. Keep your recipe consistent: many food vendors make awesome pastries in the beginning to get the market's attention, and then start to reduce the quality afterwards to make profits. But the market isn't fooled. It will respond to your drop in quality. Using fake sugar or adding more water to your dough aren't subtle adjustments; people notice. So work on a recipe that cuts it for you, and stick with it.

3. Cleanliness: can't be overemphasized. This includes not using rancid or overused or incompatibly used oil. Because a funny taste triggers the imagination, and you won't be there to explain.

When your product gets popular, and you are catering to higher-end consumers, you can work on packaging in small paper boxes. They're better than plastic for oily foods.

Oh, and bring the principal free samples when you go. It's good PR.

Bribe the principal to pursue all the other sellers then you become the only seller (Monopoly) you could sell one puff puff for #200 even.
Dont bother to thank me

I don't understand, what is disgrace gotta do with it? It's either you settle with the disgrace of making your legit pay, or deal with the disgrace of not having money in future, your call

Focus on the business climate, 100naira per snack may be high and will reduce possible sales, try to negotiate with a baker to make cheap snacks, 50 naira per piece snacks, puff puff is old school, meat pie is better, it has class, boys will want to buyto impress girls, make it 50naira. Try to collect data and track your earnings.

Do not do Zobo. Don't do what you like to do in business, do what is needful. Zobo exposes you to risk, i.e. spoilage ( especailly with the electricity problems ) The market for getting Zobo ingredients and pastries are not the same, it will force you to make two different trips. I recommend counting Zobo from a producer if you want to do it, otherwise, don't do it.

Focus on pastries :

FISH ROLL - 50 NAIRA

MEAT PIE - 50 NAIRA

Don't do puff puff or bons, focus on attraction, kids want to look cool, so cooler snacks will induce more sales

OUTSOURCE THE PRODUCTION....Or try to make your snacks yourself for the first few weeks, calculate your profit. Later, calculate the profit against the amount you will make if you outsource, this way, you can determine if you'll continue producing yourself or outsource

If you wanna do Zobo, please make sure it's flavored, pineapple flavor in Zobo tastes like life at its best...

Vanilla falvour too ordinary... Strawberry flavour is also nice... But, who knows, start, this is what matters. Like Nike's motto, Just do it. Don't over-deliberate, just start !

I do commend your effort on wanting to sell zobo and puff. puff.. My sincere advice to you don't do fish in d puff puff.. It will be more expensive.

Puff puff as a snack would be very good if you can mix at home and fry in the school provided a space is given to you. The smell of dough frying would definitely bring students your way..
Zobo is good only if youhcan get it chilled to discourage fermentation.
Wish you success in your endeavors..

Well it's not bad as long as location is concerned, but when you want to make something "spectacular", you must also know you'll spend a lot in production, so you might have to sell at an expensive price, not really expensive but just too high for children in public schools to afford often (don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're poor kids). Just make something nice and affordable. The packaging should be something unique and remember that hygiene matters a lot in food business. With all these, I think you'll be fine.

You have a good idea but wrong approach. If u are based in Lagos, d idea will not work except u are going to sell ur products outside d school compound as each has their vendors approved by d government as well as d current ban on use of stove/charcoal or gas cooker in schools. Ur Best bet is to find a space outside d school to sell ur products or look for a good private school with large population. Wish you all the best

Since there are people who sells stuffs like this there... This is my little candid advice in winning those students heart...
1) puffpuff business is highly profitable... So make yours a bit bigger than that of your competitors.

2) move closer to the students, joke with them, give them free 'puffpuff' sometimes too... It booms business

3) why not add eggroll and fish-sauce pie...

4) make sure the zobo is thick and sweet, I pray NEPA people won't discourage you... Why not add kunu... And maybe soya milk... Before you know it, other people aside students will start patronising you....
I wish you luck

I don't believe selling puff puff in secondary school is the best option for you now. Though it's only God that knows that. I'd advised you don't look forward to having such quick money but to something that will last you long.
