I have just called the two numbers. The first was switched off at the time. The second was answered by Barrister Ita Essien who is the Liaison Office Rep for Senator Gershom Bassey. We spoke and I can confirm that the number is indeed, that of Senator Gershom Bassey's Office for connecting with his constituents. This thread is in bad taste.

RE: GERSHOM BASSEY’S BILLBOARD PHONE NUMBERS BELONG TO MORTUARY ATTENDANT

Our attention has been drawn to a publication purportedly written by one Efio Ita-Nyok calculated to disparage, malign and ingeniously distort and discredit the personality of the Distinguished Senator Gershom Bassey. As ridiculous as this publication may sound, it is important that we respond to this allegation by debunking some of these inaccurate and deliberate falsehood concocted to score cheap and unviable political points so that we do not by commission of silence, lend strength and credence to this deliberate campaign of calumny and deception ingloriously amplified to dent the image of a hardworking and resilient Senator.

Let me first thank Efio for helping us establish the fact that the phone numbers on Sen. Gershom Bassey’s Billboards are active, though he falsely and maliciously said it was answered by a mortuary attendant and was a decoy put in place by the Senator to remain elusive. It is clear he was very disappointed to realize that the phone lines were functional since he called the line with a belief that the phone numbers were scams. The point here is that the publisher has never seen or heard of a legislator who is bold enough to display his phone numbers and give his constituents access the way Sen. Gershom Bassey has done, I tell you, he will not find another.

Secondly, I need to quote the said publisher so we see the extent of falsehood in his publication, he said “ I understand that distinguished Senator Gershom Bassey was accosted on Wednesday 24th January 2018 by a handful of his constituents mainly youths at the gate of his Akai Efa, Calabar residence and demanded that the law maker tell them when his twin phone numbers will finally connect”. I want to state that this is a lie from the pit of hell, on the 24th day of January 2018, Sen. Gershom Bassey was on the floor of the senate at about 11.30am leading the debate on his Bill for an Act To Establish the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre Establishment Bill, 2016 which came up for second reading and Fire(Hazard,Prevention and Safe Guard) Bill, 2018 that came up for first reading.

Another falsehood is that Sen. Gershom Bassey’s Calabar residence is not in Akai Efa but in Asari Eso.
We hereby invite members of the public and the good people of Cross River South Senatorial District to call for the Senate Order Paper of 24th January, 2018 to establish the veracity of our assertion and the falsehood in the publisher’s claim.
We know that elections are around the corner, people may come up with all forms of distractions to slow down our relentless senator. But let me tell Sen. Gershom Bassey’s traducers, this campaign of calumny will not in any way, slow down the accelerated pace of delivering the dividends of democracy that Senator Gershom Bassey has sworn to bring to his constituents. This mandate is sacrosanct and a deed of faith that must be delivered.

We will like to inform the good people of Cross River South Senatorial District that Senator Gershom Bassey has on so many occasions used these phone lines to communicate with over 5,000 people and has also assisted a lot of his constituents through this medium.
For the publisher, who I see as an attention seeker to cook up this ignoble lies to gain cheap political attention, smack of hypocrisy and insincerity. I will say with all degree of honesty that he should go beyond being an arm chair critic and go for proper verification at the appropriate quarters to set the record straight before going on air. He may as well contact the service providers (GLO and MTN) to verify the authenticity of our claim.
Thirdly, on the issue of accessibility, the Senator is one of the most accessible Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because he operates an unhindered and unfettered access. Those who have visited his residence in Calabar and his Office in the national Assembly will attest to this fact.

On the issue of the Constituency office, Sen. Gershom Bassey’s constituency office is located at No.16 Ibako Lane, State Housing Estate. Every Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is entitled to one constituency office that covers his or her Senatorial District. He or she would have liaison officers in each of the LGAs in his constituency and Sen. Gershom Bassey has liaison officers in all LGAs of his constituency. In addition, it is the sincere belief of the Senator that his constituents all over his Senatorial District would easily access him and his office through these dedicated lines than through his liaison officers. Having dedicated phone lines is very much in sync with best modern democratic practice as seen in other developed democratic climes.

On the issue of representation in the Senate, I am pleased to inform Cross River South that Sen. Gershom Bassey used his influence as Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Upstream to attract the location of a federal government project, the Nigerian Oil and Gas Park (NOGAP) in Okoyong Usang Abasi,Odukpani LGA. He is also working assiduously towards ensuring that a Department of Petroleum Resources(DPR) office is established in Calabar since Calabar has the highest number of petrol depots in the South South and South East region. He intends to ensure that the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) upgrades most of the science related faculties in the University of Calabar and Cross River University of Technology among other things.

These are all uncommon feat because a senator may stay in the Senate for 16 years without being able to attract a federal project to his constituency, but Sen. Gershom Bassey has, within 2 years of his stay in the Senate, attracted Federal Government presence. This is where the actual representation lies and not only in the execution of constituency projects.

Let me also say this, with all honesty and assurances that no man is an island when it comes to knowledge and information sharing, the Distinguished Senator and his Camp are open to alternative suggestions that will ease perceived communication bottleneck that may have been noticed.

In conclusion, it is our intention to draw knowledge and resilience from the criticism noticed in this write up. It is not in doubt that in the quest of providing leadership, recurring human challenges will keep popping up and it is human to falter in the course of tackling challenges. But we promise you that the Distinguished Senator’s experience, set skills and capacity in human development to handle these issues are not in doubt.
As a matter of fact, he is more determined and focused to provide quality dividends of democracy to his constituents.
