Mr Victor is an owner of a poultry farm in Arochuwku Abia State. He was having challenges breeding his birds. His birds were dying even after been given the best feeds, medication and vaccinations.
He tried putting some layers in the same pen, at first they were doing fine but as time goes by they started dying and their production decline drastically from 80% to 40% within a month.
He thought the problem he was having was because the birds were on deep litre. He reached out to us and we requested for some informations about the poultry farm which include the pictures of the farm.
We studied the picture and sent some of our team to do some investigations, and we found out that the major problem of Mr Victor's poultry farm is Lack of Cross Ventilation which was caused by inappropriate structural layout.
The best option could have been to rebuild the poultry house but he was financially unstable, he asked us if anything could be done about the old house. So we suggested we adjust the poultry house to suite his needs. So we decided to break some of the walls and do some adjustments as seen in the picture.

POULTRY HYGIENE
Cleanliness as they say is close to Godliness but in poultry cleanliness is close to healthy and productive birds. In poultry there are so many causes of diseases and more of them which farmer take lesser attention to is Proper Hygiene.
Proper Hygiene in respect to their feeding equipments, drinking equipments, housing (cages). Poultry farming is not for a lazy man or woman because for the more lazy the farmer is the more expose the birds are to diseases. Many people don't see poultry hygiene as something important because they are more focus on the poultry productivity forgetting that if the birds are not well kept they won't be productive. Poultry get dirty through different means. Some of them are:
Through dust
Through feeding (spillage)
Through water leakage
Through birds behavior (some birds are wild)
Insects and rodents
DUST
Dust from the emotions are trapped on poultry house nets, doors and cages preventing easy flow of air within the poultry house.
FEEDS SPILLAGE
It is another cause of poultry sorta. Feeds particles that drops on the ground or falls on the cages in the process of feeding if leave for long decompose and attracts certain bacteria into the poultry house causing infection for birds.
WATER LEAKAGE
Water leakage if happens mixes with the poultry Litre causing the evolve of Ammonia gas especially in deep Litre system. First attracts a lot of germs causing infection to poultry birds.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR FARM CLEAN
Provision of foot bathe at the entrance of the poultry house
Regular dusting of pen house net
Removal of curbweb
Blocking of any visible hole caused by rodent.
Proper placement/hanging of feeders and drinkers esp in deep litre system: Usage of automatic drinkers is advice
Regular cleaning of water pipe with sponge and water is advicable
In case of spillage in deep litre system, poultry litre should be packed immediately and dispose properly.
In battery cage system, feeds trough should be clean with water and foam regularly. Water pipes should be cleaned both externally (using water and foam) and internally (proper flushing to remove any drop segment). Nipples and Nipple cups should be clean with foam.
Regular sweeping of the poultry house at least twice in a day.
Regular packing of Litre of at least once in two days.
Cages should be dusting using short broom to remove any accumulated dust on mesh.

Lastly, when birds are to be stocked, the house and all equipments should be washed with germicide.If all this are done with a strong dedication the birds as a lesser chance of being expose to infection.

Ventilation is one of the most common challenges facing broiler growers in both conventional and closed-environment housing. Broilers should easily achieve their economic and genetic potential when they live in a specifically controlled environment that meets their needs. Ventilation systems are designed to automatically manage this environment for broilers, especially during the brooding period. Whether you use a tunnel- or cross-ventilation system or a combination of both, ventilation is necessary to create the optimum environment that broilers need to grow and develop during each stage of life.

The right system not only ensures adequate air exchange throughout the broiler house, but also removes excess moisture from the litter, maintains oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, and regulates temperature within the house.

1. Maintain Air Quality
A key requirement of any minimum ventilation system is to meet the oxygen demand of the modern broiler chick and to ensure good distribution of fresh air throughout the broiler house. Oxygen is required for both the production of body heat and metabolism of nutrients essential for growth. During the first week, the carbon dioxide is primarily produced by the combustion of LPG and from the chicks themselves. A chick’s respiratory system is at near full capacity at comfort temperature. As the environment temperature drops, the chick must consume considerably higher levels of oxygen to stay comfortable. Ventilation systems remove carbon dioxide and supply chicks with the oxygen they need to develop healthy cardiovascular systems and to prevent problems such as ascites, which can occur if demand for oxygen increases by just five percent.

2. Remove Excess Moisture
The minimum ventilation systems are also responsible for removing excess moisture from the litter. Today’s modern broiler chicks consume nearly twice as much water at 28 days than they did 25 years ago. Approximately 75 percent of the water consumed daily is released as water vapor from the respiratory system or deposited along with the droppings as moisture in the litter.

The litter in a broiler house acts like a sponge. If the ventilation system cannot keep up with moisture deposited in the litter, the surface of the litter eventually becomes damp and slippery. Once moisture reaches the surface, no water can escape and the situation cannot be reversed. This is a dangerous and unsanitary environment, producing very high bacterial loads, ammonia odors, insect infestations and even footpad lesions. However, proper management of moisture levels should ensure oxygen and carbon dioxide levels are kept in check.

3. Regulate Temperature
The third function of the minimum ventilation system is to maintain the proper temperature distribution in the broiler house. Chicks are not thermo-competent until 14 days of age, and therefore rely on supplementary heat to keep them warm.

During the first seven days, chicks will more than quadruple their body weight. This is the only opportunity to achieve such growth in a single week. However, if chicks are cold, they are less active and they don’t eat. If they don’t eat, they don’t grow. Keeping chicks warm and ensuring adequate supplementary feed, access to fresh water and good minimum ventilation are crucial factors for determining a flock’s overall performance.
