Jaye felt great, like he had never been. It was the sweetest experience he had ever had. There was no way he could feel bad. All that madness about what his friend did were long gone. He would even call them, had he not impulsively broken his SIM card and he was not someone very good with numbers. He didn’t even know his own phone number.

He was now thankful for what his friends did. In a way they had enabled him to be free of the guilt he would have felt for loving up with someone else at the expense of Rihanat. Even at that, he felt they deserve the punishment. After all, they were his friends. They were supposed to be loyal.

The punishment took a toll on his friends, since they didn’t know how or what he felt, they concluded that he had deliberately excommunicated them and had dire feelings for their role in decision.

“Maybe I shouldn't have been that close to Adams.” Rihanat continuously blamed herself.

“I messed up” Adams would think… his thoughts vibrating in his head even louder than the sound of his word would.

It was just a prank but things would have been better had he not played it. Only if he could undo all he had done would he feel any better.
Not just Adams and Rihanat, but everyone regretted the role they played in the issue.

“That was very stupid of me.” David thought anytime he tried to rework his involvement in the stupid prank. He was always worried about how Jaye was faring. This was probably why he didn’t want to go into relationships, he thought. It gross, the prank the pulled.

Thinking about it, would he really take that with Bisi? Maybe not, but even Jaye should at least demand some explanation. He went back and forth but always ended up blaming his role in it.

With all the upset and anger gone, having been fully briefed, even Bisi felt stupid. She had acted on impulse and the result didn’t feel right at all. She blew it all out of proportion. If she hadn’t made that call, perhaps Jaye would have been less upset and might have taken it easy. She blamed everyone else and blamed herself even more.

The feeling was uniform. They had collectively ruined the relationship. They had bond Jaye & Rihanat and they had disbanded them.

“We should correct this ugly mistake.” Adams said to David one day. More like an order than a suggestion. He still loved Rihanat but couldn’t bear the sad face she carried around every time.

David was surprised by the suggestion. He was sipping soya milk and almost spilled it when Adams spoke. He momentarily paused the drinking probably due to the surprise or to avoid the impediment to what he was going to say.

“How?” he asked gulping his milk drink. “Do you know anywhere he is in Nassarawa?” The tone was more like a statement than a question.
The question put Adams do-good-resolve to dim. He was not sure too.

“I guess we keep trying his number then or pray he comes home.” He aversely offered.

The self torture continued. What they didn’t know was that Jaye missed them too. Only that he couldn't call them. He had broken his SIM card and didn’t know anyone’s phone number. “I will have to go to them one of these days” he would say to himself only that he couldn’t tell how soon it would be.

There was really no pressing need for him to go home. Though it was his home town, he couldn’t really call it home. He grew up in Lagos and visited Ede only during Sallah. Even when they went for those festivals he never connected with members of his extended family. He never thought he the place was never a place for him until his father suddenly insisted that he would continue his school in their hometown. The man noticed his son’s apathy for the hometown and decided to send him down there to reconnect.

It was in Ede that he made his friends for life or supposed friends for life. His friendship with David and Adams started in secondary school and endured through their university years. At graduation, they all decided to stick together. They all chose to settle in Ede. The relative quietness of the town and its almost constant electricity appealed to them.

His friends had graduated before him and were settled already. David ran a restaurant and Adams worked as a supervisor for a construction company. Jaye would settle there too as an entrepreneur and hype man. After graduating, he lived there until he was mobilized for NYSC. Then the prank came.

He wasn’t going to throw away all the plans they had because of some stupid prank but he had to take his time. He would let this ‘thing’ with Hadiza grow first. He would nurse it to a certain stage where she would want to go anywhere with him. More so, he wanted to give Rihanat the space to heal, to move on and get over him.

He spent the bulk of service year in Nassarawa and visited his mother in Lagos only twice and she understood. She knew he was in a far place, far away from home. So she didn’t bother him to visit often. Jaye could almost thank her for not going mummy on him.He wouldn’t have been able to handle her troubles.

The absence of mama’s pressing gave him the room to enjoy his new home-home away from home. All seemed well until few weeks to the end of his service.

One month prior to the end of his service, Mr Salisu retired from his job and decided to go back to his village, Kukuri in Yobe state taking his family with him.

Amidst the preparations for relocation, Mr Salisu summoned Jaye to his seating room where they saw football matches every weekend.

“Maybe I didn’t tell you but I am not the owner of this house and my rent will be due in December and I think your service will end in July. Am I correct?" he began.

“Yes sir” Jaye replied trying to figure out what the talk was going to be all about.

Mr Salisu knew he hadn’t call the boy to talk about tenancy and house rents but how would he go about discussing his intimate affairs with his daughter? He eventually went out of his own way.

“Young man, I know you love my daughter. I am sure she loves you too. To be honest, I used to believe she would never say yes to any man.

In fact, her difficulty with men had led me to take her for a lesbian.” He said and paused briefly. Jaye was slightly amused by the lesbian stuff but still didn’t get why he had to tell him all that.

Mr Salisu continued anyways. “She has always proved difficult for men. There was one Ali, young and wealthy. He tried all he could to get her including trying to make me influence her. To be honest, I thought I liked him until I met you. She turned him and many others away. Her only excuse was that she was not ready which I respect. But you came from nowhere and changed all of that for her. She got intoxicated by you.
Whatever means you had used, I must admit I was relieved she wasn’t lesbian after all.” He paused at this point and held Jaye’s hand. “I don’t mean to and I know I can’t separate the two of you but I am relocating and must take her with me. She has been adamant that she won’t go with me. Please help me to convince her. She can go anywhere she wants later but I don’t want to return home the way I left, with no wife or children. Please beg her not to disgrace me. I have had enough to put up with already, she should not aggravate it. I would not be asking you this, if her mother was alive…” words drained off his mouth as the emotions poured through the thin air.

The separation was inevitable and they both felt the pain of it but they decided it will not be for long. She will soon be mobilized for NYSC service. They would meet again.

For the first time in months they realized they didn’t have each other’s phone number. They never needed it. The funny thing was as Hadiza saved her number on Jaye’s phone, she saw another contact saved with her name but the number was incomplete, just 080.

“What is this?” she asked showing Jaye the contact. Jaye smiled as he remembered how he had saved the number. He was wondering why it hadn’t disappeared with the broken SIM but realized he had saved it in the phone memory. He was still smiling when Hadiza asked again “I said, what is this?”

“I had the impression you were a fool that day and was not completely wrong” She said laughing after Jaye had told her the story behind the contact.

“But you so, so wrong, the number begins with 070 not 080” she added jokingly.

“Ok. Let’s start afresh. My name is Jaye. I want to know you better. Maybe we can start from your phone number.” Jaye teased extending his hand for a hand shake.

“Sorry I don’t tell my name to strangers but maybe I can sacrifice my number.” They both laughed as they prepared for the time apart.

The next day the father and daughter left Akwanga for Kukuri in Yobe state. But the day after, sad news broke and shook Boulevard High School to its root and Jaye even to the bones and veins. The vehicle the father and daughter travelled in had an accident and Mr Salisu was reported to have died on the spot but no report whatsoever about Hadiza, whether she was dead or alive.

Jaye profusely dialled her number but to no avail. It didn't ring. He resorted to hope and expectation. He hoped she wasn’t dead and expected she would call one day. Maybe she was in a coma somewhere. She would definitely reach him once she was well, he hoped.

He waited days and nights, expecting a call from her. It was a cruel moment for him. One he hoped was just a dream but sadly was not. His world was tearing apart. He couldn’t handle the emotional rollercoaster. His life veered from the anger of betrayal to the Joy of true love to the deep pain of separation and now, the torment of the not knowing what was actually up with the love of his life. It was getting him close to insanity.

HELLO PEEPS! IT'S FRIDAY... OYA LEGGO

ELEVEN

Weeks went by and dragged into months. Jaye waited but got nothing in the form of a contact from Hadiza. He got no call from her neither was there any news about her. He sought reasons or at least a singular reason why he should be positive but failed in the search. There was no way he could be sane if he didn’t see her. He considered going to Yobe but where in Yobe would he search. Damaturu, Potiskum or Chibok? If he couldn’t go looking for her, he hoped one day she would come looking.

At the completion of his NYSC service, he stayed back in Akwanga, with the hope that she would one day, come calling or perhaps he would someday meet someone with some useful information that he could use to find her.

He met his new landlord to ask for an extension of his tenancy. If he stayed in the same place, he believed it would be easier for Hadiza to find him. The landlord had another idea though. He wanted him out as soon as possible to give space for his house help. So there was really nothing Jaye could do to change his mind. That he could not get him to change his mind did not break his resolve, he only got more determined. He searched more and more and finally got a place in town.

Though he could not retain the apartment, he was able to retain his job. He was going to apply to be retained when the school principal, the then vice principal called him to her office.

“Mr Subair, how are you doing?” she started not really sure of how he was going to receive the proposal.
He was really so good at his assignment that the school wanted to retain him. But he was not the first example of such. Corpers, especially ones as brilliant as Mr. Subair here hardly accepted a teaching job.

“I am doing fine ma.” He replied knowing he had lied. He was not doing any fine.

“I want to inform you that this school is really pleased by your efforts and we are willing to extend your service if you so wish.” She said as briefly as she could.

“Well…” he started not knowing what exact words with which he should reply.
This was something he wanted (not really- if everything was fine) but as it stood it was about the best thing to have happened to him in ages.

“I will think about it” he said trying all his best not to sound excited.

“I will get back to you.” He added so that the woman would not think he was throwing an attitude.

“Ok. Please do so very soon so that we can make decisions on our other options” she said in an attempt to show him the school was in control and in control.
_ _ _

About the same time when he was finally settling down, pressure grew from home. His mother wanted him to return to Lagos. They had had a lot of disagreement over his decision to settle in Ede. She had never wanted him to be far from her if not for husband’s decision to send the boy away. Even now, she would take the Ede option. She begged and cried but Jaye stuck to his decision. He had his reasons too.

She got a good chance to reach him when she ran into his son’s friends at a function in Ede. Actually, the meeting was not an accident. Adams intentionally went to her. He heard about the funeral function of one grand uncle of Jaye’s and was almost certain that his mother would be there. He decided not to take chances. If she came, he would meet her.

He believed the best way to reach Jaye would be through his mum. Though they were not really the best of friends, Jaye wouldn’t subject his mother to total neglect as he did his friends.

He scouted through sea of heads he swerved through the crowd of people. David followed closely behind trying not to get lost in the thick of people. Everyone minded their business carrying plates, yelling greetings, calling for more food, asking if someone’s daddy had been served. It was a chaos- an organized one.

The more they looked, the harder it got for them to figure out Jaye’s mum. Everyone looked alike in their uniformed attire- asses were identically heavy and huge boobs had huge tummies with them. It seemed everyone here was family and had striking resemblance. Perhaps, the women’s endowment was not to be entirely blamed, one could question why Adams and David scouted for boobs and asses instead of faces.
They thought they had lost it when they bumped into a woman. She was different. Ok. Not so different. She had huge ass and boobs too. That was where the similarity ended- she wasn’t carrying a swollen tummy. She wore different attire and one would be forgiven for think she gate crashed.

Adams was kind of delighted by the sight that beheld him not because she was Jaye’s mum but because she was very beautiful for her age. David was pleasured too but his own pleasure derived from seeing Jaye’s mum.

“We are very sorry ma.” David apologized for the bump and Adams followed his apology with an introduction.

“My name is Adams and this is David. We are Jaye’s friends.” Adams said like he was yelling but the noise of the party people drown much of his pitch.

“Ah! eyin omo mi (my children), how are you doing?" She asked, showing her delight with a huge smiled. The best she managed since her son had rebelled.

“We're fine ma” Adams replied scanning the crowd for Jaye, it was his grand uncle’s funeral he should be there.

“Mummy, where is Jaye?” Adams finally used his mouth as his eyes failed him.

“Eh… Ore yin ma ti taku s'ile awusa. (your friend has refused to leave Hausa land) There is nothing I've not begged him with. He's just too stubborn. He took one stupid teaching job” she replied.

“He stopped talking to us all, we can't even call him” David moaned.

“Shey you don't have his number ni? We still talked this morning” She said wondering if the boys were even really her son's friends.

“The one we have has not been ringing almost since he went for service. I would have gone over to Nassarawa to find him but I don’t know where exactly to go” Adams said dropping his shoulders.

“Well, he said he was posted to one Boulevard High School in Akwanga....” “ehn! mo n bo o! (I’m coming)” she said over her shoulder responding to calls from some loud old woman, even Adams was startled by her pitch as she yelled “Iya Eko! (Lagos woman!)” She dropped Jaye’s new number and hurried off.
