Why the bad news every minute?
Are you not tired of successes and achievements makings rounds on paper which cannot be seen or felt physically?

If u can't understand the technicalities of what's going on, hold ur peace! Do u have to blame Buhari for everything? Did he force them out of business in other countries too?

They are not shutting down the website. They want to cut jobs in Nigeria while operating the website maybe from South Africa. They want to make more money knowing there is no regulation that ask them to keep Nigeria office opened

I mean operating physical presence

I saw this coming and many more online startups are struggling to stay afloat. Please to the young entrepreneurs out there, I have an advice for you: Profits sustains business, not hype or noise. Profit in business is success, but unfortunately, the media tends to deceive a lot of people.

- Being the biggest, is not profit.
- Receive an award, is not profit.
- Being everywhere and spending millions in ads is not profit
- Raising $1million is not profit
- Signing up 1 million users in an hour is not profit
- Having 10million followers on FB or Twitter is not profit
- Rushing to establish presence in 40 countries is not profit

Nothing beats growing organically. If you need a proof to the above points, just look at Nairaland.com.
Experience in business have taught me not to be moved by vanity metrics. Just show me the money.

They didn't say they are closing this offices because they are broke, they probably just want to operate from one office, I truly don't see the need of maintaining a physical presence in this countries.

Explain more about growing organically.

It means when a business expands through the sale of it's own products and services and not through mergers or acquisitions.

This is beyond Buhari. The business model was faulty from day one. Hype and Vanity metrics cannot sustain a business.
. . . You made a fantastic assertion in your earlier post. But not this: OLX is far from hype and vanity metrics. OLX is a very successful business model. The truth is, the Nigerian business environment is hostile (people underestimate this). Take it or leave it, the President & his team have contributed nothing in changing this narrative.

Bro you just spoke my mind, they're simply trying to play smart by cutting off the work force so they can make more profit. This is why we need laws that will restrict companies from functioning in our country without a office. OLX think they're smart, nonsense

Please remove spending on adds... This is very necessary for sales u can advise that it be minimized..
Even coca cola as big as they are still advertise. One needs to tell or remind people of their product. Advertising symonds to sales so, please edit

i knew the moment this whole e commerce trend started that it wasall fireworks(a showy display that captivates our attention for a moment and then nothing).Having followed the Amazon story since the mid 2000s,I knew Nigeria was not ready for e commerce and jumping into that space was tantamount to the herd mentality(everyone doing the same thing whether it makes sense or not).Amazon has been around now for longer than some nairaland members have been alive, but in all that while it was not a profit making entity despite their ever soaring valuation.
Not until very recently especially with the new Amazon Web Services did they start declaring very tiny profits compared to the scale of their operations. Now Amazon operates or originates from a system where the logistics of e commerce make sense.Fedex,UPS and DHL have been trying to outdo themselves for decades which means even before Amazon was born ,the logistics of delivery was sorted.Secondly to all those asking how Buhari comes in,well here is your answer. For logistics to make sense, you need infrastructure.Really good infrastructure.
Good roads, airstrips with safe tarmacs that can be utilized at night.Ibadan airport is a joke and so are most airports in nigeria .You cannot sustain a big business depending on just Lagos ,Port Harcout and Abuja and more importantly you need the night economy to make e commerce efficient.
The only people that work at night in nigeria are armed robbers, prostitutes, corrupt policemen and recently uber and taxify drivers.

Like the FTC said rightly, its not about noise but profit. I learnt this too from one supermarket close to my house. They have big sales but low overhead costs. Unlike another store with big sales and high costs.

These Re commodities used daily, they are necessary even with out hype the will sell is they are in a good location, price is right and things are available.. I don't remember remember next ad enticing but they make more sales than shoprite

But for some, u n I know that advertising is necessary

Every business has it's own strategy. All these you summarized would have translated into the much needed profit if the outlined were well utilized. Besides, anything online that opens door to millions of individual sellers without absolute control of their conducts and wears ( eg Jumia) is bound to have a huge infiltration of fraudulent beings. That's what I think killed it. Their kind of website requires a high level of confidence and goodwill to thrive but it is absolutely lacking of these two essential elements. God's speed to them, I hope Jiji is learning. We don't wanna lose you too.

By the way, don't compare OLX and NL, they offer absolutely two different businesses. If all NL does too is strictly online commercials, Seun would have grayed out by now.

Thank you.. I had to ask him to edit his post on advertising...

It depends on the business model. Some businesses require that you have huge number of users before you can make profits. And at some point in time, you may need to raise some money in order to expand even make more profits.

With everything going on for it,Amazon could hardly declare a profit, how much more operating in a system where you have to provide your own logistics.Imagine how much konga spent on fueling their dispatch bikes daily, then imagine the thieves in admin inflating bills and putting in vouchers for services that were not rendered.Imagine the dispatch that somehow pockets 500 every time he is to buy fuel for the bike.
Amazon spent a fortune building data centers that have eventually given birth to the very profitable Amazon Web Services,Konga and Jumia spend a fortune on diesel and acquisition of generators that just pollute the environment and make the cost profile of the business very ugly.
Should I start on electricity?Naaa, story for another day.A quick question though,Payporte is sponsoring big brother naija, but does anyone use them ?

If you have lived abroad, then you would realize there is an entire night ecosystem.Construction workers repairing roads, rail tracks etc.Street sweepers, advertising billboard companies changing billboard ads at night.Maintenance crews checking plumbing and electrical wiring in tunnels to make sure cities run efficiently during the day.
How do you think large supermarkets always look neat and well arranged.Delivery trucks dock at night, deliver their goods and waiting staff sort and replenish the aisles before the first customers come in in the morning.
Flights land in Heathrow from naija at 4am. That is the night economy at work.

Tonaton is bigger than olx in Ghana. The guys running the app are making a kill. You pay to place your ads.

You can imagine many businesses that depends solely on olx going offline? seun should position properly and take advantage.

Whatever happened to nairalist?

It's one thing to be "THE BRAND", it's another thing to "MAXIMIZE PROFIT" from the brand.
Facebook, for example have still not figured out how to maximally monetize whatsapp

The data they get from WhatsApp users alone makes them billions of USD.

In as much as I agree with you on most of the points made, you need to understand that it isn’t the media that’s deceiving a lot of people.

The media is just a medium to reach out. It works for some Yes, but if a start up decides to pump millions into advertising, they do that at their own volition. So don’t blame us for people’s poor sense of business strategy or module.

On the flip side, there are businesses that thrive well with major advertising... but advertising / publicity alone isn’t what drives a business to success. Advertising is just an ingredient. Every other thing has to be put in place. So when businesses fail, blaming a sector that has no control in decision making of SMEs or Established firms is wrong.

True talk, but they just released WhatsApp Business which is specifically targeted at SMEs. Hopefully they can work out a strategy to monitize it and still make it useful and user-friendly.

OLX shooting down business in Nigeria and other African countries is not the first of it kind and it will not be last .

Millions of businesses in Nigeria have experienced similar faith quietly and those who strive to stay afloat cannot produce to their fullest capacity.

Economic policies in the country is not robust enough to encourage sustainability and growth and the end result is not only that companies and SMEs looses their identities but increases unemployment ratio.

I am of the opinion that the country needs a messiah to revitalize its economic policies , springs up a fast financial support for the dead CEOs.
