One of the popular questions from prospective clients, and first time home owners, is: “I’m in the process of completing my building project and considering what to do for my driveway, but can’t decide on a material to use. What’s better: Interlocking pavers, concrete or asphalt for the driveway?”

If the issue were based solely on aesthetics, interlocking pavers would win, hands down. Their clean lines, colour variations and professionally landscaped appearance add curb appeal and beauty to any home’s entrance, driveways, street and highway.

Will an interlocking paver patio or driveway outlast a concrete or asphalt installation? Yes - if the sub-grade (Base) is stable; the installation is professionally completed and the patio or driveway is properly maintained.

Since the interlocking pavers “float” on top of their solid sub-surface (Base), they are less likely to show damage from adverse conditions such as flooding, freezing in extreme regions affected by snow or are they likely to be affected by heat in tropical regions such as our climate.

Concrete and asphalt, however, since they are a more solid surface, will crack when extreme temperatures cause the ground to shift.

Every year, a homeowner may run into maintenance costs for concrete and asphalt, repairing cracks and re-sealing the surface.

While an interlocking paver driveway or patio installation cost may be slightly more than concrete or asphalt, at the initial stage, their upkeep and maintenance is simpler than any other hard-surface application.

In PRO’S & CON'S

Pro: Interlocking pavers are more durable and have a longer lifespan than any other hard-surface patio or driveway application.
Pro: Pavers are more easily repaired, when necessary, than concrete or asphalt.
Pro: Pavers come in gorgeous colours, with installation patterns that can complement your home giving you a unique landscaping.
Con and pro: Pavers have a slightly higher installation cost than asphalt, but costs are comparable to concrete.

We need to reconstruct our driveway and I was thinking about changing asphalt to interlocking pavers. The design and the variety of colors are just incredible! But my 6 years old son likes to play basketball with his friends and running on solid surfaces can be traumatizing. His friend had broken his arm last year by slipping on wet asphalt playing basketball. My husband read about resin driveway installation, but I'm not sure how durable, it is Could you please give me your expert opinion about resin material? Is it better than interlocking pavers?
