I guess it was done that way since Ketu is not LG headquarters. AKD is another one that most Lagosians always mix up because AKD used to the number plate abbreviation for Ikorodu Division in the early 70s.

AKD was derived from Akodo, the capital (or headquarters) of Ibeju-Lekki LG.

The unique plate combination of all non customised plate numbers is in the format ABC-123DE.The first three letters indicate the Local Government Area in which the vehicle was registered, which are followed by three digits and two letters.



ABC-123DE example

The KTU actually stands for Ikotun which is the headquarters of Alimosho.
The codes are actually coined from the headquarters of the local government areas and not the local government themselves. Example, Lagos Ireland is AAA which stands for Ademola Adeniji Adele, the headquarters of Lagos Ireland

Secondly, the last two digits could also be reserved for some specific vehicles. The Q series used to be for bikes and tricycles. QA, QB, ETC. The X for taxis and transport vehicles, the H for hilux vans, etc

JJJ is OJO. I'm not sure you ever noticed there's no plate with the letters O and I in Nigeria. The reason is very simple. So that it won't be confused for 0 or 1 when viewed from a distance. Take for instance, OWO in ondo state is WWW, IFON in ondo state is FFN, ONDO town is NND, OYO town is YYY, IFE is FFE, IKEJA is KJA, ILORIN is LRN, OSOGBO is SGB, LOKOJA is LKJ, OKITIPUPA is KTP. So just try to observe more.

When the LG name is not used, the town which is the Headquarters is used.

RSH means Karshi

RBC means Rubuchi

AAA means Lagos Island

YAB means .....Yabo

I used to think the last two letters stands for the initials(name/surname) of the owner of the plate number/vehicle.

ADK 452 AA and ADK 452 XA. ADK means Ado Èkìtì Local Government from Èkìtì state. AA means numbering in such a way for private it starts with AA and takes number from 01 to 999, then to AE, AE starts from 01 to 999 till AZ and then move to Letter B and so on. For commercial numbers ADK 452 XA. It starts from XA (01-999), then XB (01-999) and so on. This way you can identify the serial number of a particular number in a local government for either private or commercial. Eg, MUE 222 AE is number 1221 private number registered in Ekiti East local government, Omuo Èkìtì. This is how I got it. AA picks from 01 to 999, that's 999 cars, then moved to AE number 222 add together you get 1221. This is what I know about it
