Hello all,

I am looking for advice. So I recently obtained a PhD in Urban Planning in the UK, as well my previous degrees, but I am returning home for NYSC. My plan is to be a lecturer in Nigeria or elsewhere. I know things in Nigeria are bad and many people will tell me to stay where I am, but it’s not possible to remain, I don’t want to be here illegally, the job market is not nearly as nice as people with engineering degrees and I want to do NYSC and get it over with. I don’t have any high expectations when I return, I'm expecting to start from the ground up, so I understand that things would be difficult.

I was wondering if people could offer insights on how hard it is to get a lecturer job in Nigeria. I know having connections is the most important factor but can one find a lecturing job without it connections?

As for NYSC, I assume I’ll be posted to teach in a secondary school, but is it possible to get a university post?

Any advice on what I can do during NYSC to help my chances of finding a job after. I already have academic papers under review at journals and I continue to work on my research.

Thank you

Did you graduate from a Nigerian University?? If Yes, it would be very easy to get a place from the University you graduated from. Good luck in your search. I hope to attain this level someday.

First of all you could make a list of universities which offer Urban Planning...( federal, state and private)

Then narrow down your research to geographical zones that you won't mind staying in..

As for the NYSC do not be shy... Be open minded and never look down on people cause you never might know who has the connections.. All still bores down to it.

All the best
