Please sweet Nigerians, my fellow Nairalanders. I'm new here. Help me in any way you can for me to know the basics. Thanks.

This is my latest pen work.

Title: With Tears In My Eyes

The whole wide world is aware of 11th of March as a prestigious day enunciated as Mothers’ Day.

The stigma of my own Mothers’ Day began when a friend of mine bypassed the pictures of my mother that I had uploaded in my status on whatsapp and commented ‘Happy Mothers Day’ on my own picture. I thought it was a friends’ mistake till I returned from church with my family and checked my facebook messenger. Behold! Not less than 10 friends left me the wish ‘Happy Mothers’ Day’.’ Jesus! I swallowed the tiniest saliva left in my mouth.

My throat began to dry and dry. My conscience began to tangle.

Another check on my whatsapp led me to two more Happy Mothers’ Day to me.

My left hand clutched my stomach. I might be pregnant, I thought. This might be the vision.

I had made love over and over again with my boyfriend during the weekend. In short, I had returned from his house that very Sunday morning and quickly joined my family to church.

I had told my family that I was very busy with serious studies in school whereas, I was having the adult fun with my boyfriend without any protection. Neither did I bother to get any contraceptive. I was hoping that it was five days to my menstrual flow so I didn’t need to worry over getting pregnant since the ovum, the egg must have been ready to be flushed out as blood. I had calculated same before and it worked.

But on this Mothers’ Day, I felt strange. Guilt hypnotized me. I had lied to my family and still on that, I had acted carelessly with him in bed. I felt lost as we ate lunch on the dinning table that noon. Everyone queried my absent gaze on nothing in particular but I told them I was thinking about an exam I have to write in school on Tuesday.

In bed I lay later, running through my thoughts. If I should have faith that my period will come tomorrow or next or go and get some drugs or leave it and find out that I’m pregnant later in the month. To disengage my thoughts, I uploaded a cute, radiating photo that I had taken in my boyfriend’s house only to get more ‘Happy Mothers’ Day’ than other compliments. To others it seemed normal but I felt weak, like I am receiving a kind of prophecy from their wishes.

I started to get rude in my replies to anyone wishing me Happy Mothers’ Day.

The last arrow that struck into my heart was when another friend on whatsapp that has not chatted me up in months sent me a chat, ‘Happy Mothers’ Day Dear.’ I quickly replied him angrily with ‘waka! shegeh!’ Again he typed,

‘Are you not a potential mother? You can even be a mother this year you know?’

‘Heeeeei!’ I screamed in my room. My two hands were on my head like a weeping widow as I began to walk to my Mother’s room.

I did’t make it into her room anyways, with tears in my eyes, I headed to a nearby pharmacy. I do not want to be the said eighteen-year-old girl who became a mother in her level 200.
