EPISODE 28
(CHAPTER TEN)

THE ACID DROPPED TO the ground some inches away from her face. Simisola opened her eyes. She breathed in and out faster. She watched the acid made a hissing noise as it ate into the ground mercilessly. A fumed rising from the spot danced in front of eyes as the heat blew across her face. She writhed and cried harder.

The men laughed hysterically. “So, you think we are just going to do this without catching some fun?” The other man bellowed and they laughed again.

The man repeated the process. Simisola saw the liquid swam to the tip once more but this time it was positioned right above her face. It seemed the fun was over. Her face became covered with sweats and her blouse stuck to her skin. Simisola gasped.

Then the man’s phone started ringing. He paused and picked the call.

“Tuaile, mama!” There was no need for hurry. They had all the time in the world to carry out the nefarious act. In fact, the longer the wait the sweeter.

“Spark, don’t do it!” the voice from the phone instructed him.

“What? Mama! We are almost done here,” he protested.

“I said don’t do it! There’s a change of plan or do you want to get caught?” The voice grew sterner.

“Okay, mama. If you say so.” He covered the jar and turned to Simisola who was squirming on the ground. “Consider yourself fortunate today, lady. If I were you I would pop champagne.” With that, he kicked her hard across the face and she lost consciousness.

“Spider, let’s get out of here.”

“Copy that, Spark.”

The two guys hurried out of the alley, leaving Simisola’s unconscious body in the cold embrace of the dark alley.

The Following Morning, Banana Island, Yemi’s Residence, 5. 45 a.m.

Yemi’s sleep was interrupted by the noise of his ringing phone. He cursed because it was the period the sleep was the most interesting.

“Oh no! Who’s this calling by 5.45 on a Sunday morning for God’s sake?” But he cautioned himself when he saw that it was Ngozi. Ngozi calling at such odd hour on a Sunday morning did not sound good. The sleep disappeared in a minute as he jumped out of bed.

“Hello Ngozi, is everything alright?”

“Good morning, Mr Yemi. Sorry to wake you up this early. Everything is not alright ooo. Simi is in the hospital. She was attacked on her way back home last night.”

“What?! Attacked? How? Why? By whom?”

“We don’t know yet. She’s in a pretty bad shape. She is at St. Anne Hospital.”

“Okay Ngozi, I am on my way.”

Yemi rushed in and out of the bathroom and shortly thereafter, he drove to the hospital. By the time he got to the hospital, he met Ngozi, Auntie Funmi, and Scorpion there at Simisola’s bedside. Ngozi explained that Simisola was found unconscious in an alley the night before by a Good Samaritan who rushed her to the hospital and then traced her number on Simisola’s phone. That was how she knew what hospital she was and had to rush down immediately. She had been with Simisola ever since and watched as the doctor and nurses fought hard to resuscitate her. Simisola had not opened her eyes since then.

On hearing that, Scorpion felt like ripping himself apart. He was overcome by an intense feeling of quilt. He blamed himself for what happened. He was at the spot and could have prevented it if he had been more diligent. It pained him that he had turned back just about two steps away from the mouth of the alley. If he had made a little more effort, as little as peeping into the alley, he wouldn’t have only saved Simisola, he would have caught the scoundrels who did this and taught them a lesson they would never had forgotten for all eternity.

Yemi excused himself to see the doctor so that he could get a report of her condition. He soon came back and explained to the others what the doctor told him. He explained that she was passing through some trauma and would be well soon. They all sat down quietly waiting for her to at least open her eyes. The ward became so quiet that the sound of a pin dropping to the floor could be heard loud and clear. The silence was deafening!

EPISODE 29
(CHAPTER TEN)

At about 11 O’clock same morning, Ngozi was the first to notice some little movements in Simisola’s eyelids. She drew the attention of the others to it. Moments later, they witnessed some more noticeable movements in the eyelids. They fluttered and began to open gradually. Her vision was blurry at first but soon became clear. She switched glances from one face to the other and by the time her eyes settled on Yemi she gave way to tears.

She began talking fast. Her heart beat too picked up the pace. It was obvious she was still traumatized. “They wanted to pour acid on me ... They wanted to disfigure me ... Acid ... Acid ... Acid ... They wanted to pour acid on me!” Then she began to shake vigorously until she started convulsing.

Yemi ran out screaming, “Doctor! Doctor!! Doctor!!!”

In an instance, the doctor and two nurses ran inside. They ordered everyone out of the room and they began another battle to stabilize her.

Outside, Scorpion paced restlessly up and down the lobby fuming with anger. He bit his lower lip and repeatedly pounded his fist into the other palm. He had to get those criminals and bring them to his self-administered justice.

Simisola’s words before the convulsion seized her replayed in his head: ‘They wanted to pour acid on me ... They wanted to disfigure me ...’ He stopped suddenly as if he stumbled on something. “Wait a minute! Did she say ‘disfigure’?” he was talking to himself, “that was the exact words Shakirah used! Silly bastard!” He marched out of the hospital. He knew exactly where to start.

About an hour later, Scorpion was at Shakirah’s doorstep banging on her door. She was making up preparing to go out when the noise from the door interrupted her.

“Who is the carpenter that wants to bring down my door?” she screamed as she walked towards the door.

Opening the door, she saw Scorpion standing akimbo at
her doorpost. “Oh, it’s you, Kasumu. I didn’t know you have become a carpenter. So to what do I owe this visit? Hope you haven’t come back begging because I already told you there would not be a second chance,” she said sarcastically.

“Shakirah! Don’t pretend you don’t know why I am here!” Scorpion said with a snarl.

“And what would that be? Please update me,” she replied with an equal measure of sarcasm.

“Don’t tell me that you don’t know that Simisola is at the hospital. At least, your errand boys should have told you they had carried out your wish!”

“What are you talking about, Kasumu? And what do you mean by my errand boys?” She began to boil in anger.

“You wanted me to disfigure Simisola for you and since I wasn’t willing to do it, I suppose you got some fools to do it.”

“Scorpion!!! How could you think like that? You think I am that daft to do a thing like that after you have known about it? You think I want to risk you and other people coming around to ask questions? Well, I’m not that desperate if you cared to know.” She walked back inside and Scorpion followed. “Be kind enough to shut the door after you. Anyway, how’s she doing?” she asked tenderly after she had calmed herself down. It had an effect on Scorpion.

“Phew!” Scorpion exhaled loudly. “Not too good but the doctor said she would be fine. They almost poured acid on her, you know.” Scorpion too had calmed down.

“That’s serious! You see now? If I really wanted to disfigure her like you alleged, you think I wouldn’t have pulled through with it? You think I would have let her walk?”

“Hmmm ... You’ve got a point there.” Scorpion began to reason with her.

“You know, I’ve been suspecting that Simisola was double dating. I think the other guy might have found out about Mr Yemi and he wasn’t happy about it.”

“Why would she want to do that? With Mr Yemi, she’s got everything every woman wanted.”

“And you think she is foolish? How long do you think a relationship between a common ghetto girl and a wealthy elite would last? It can’t work. And you think Simisola doesn’t know that too? She’s probably trying to get as much as she can now and when the relationship eventually crashes, there has to be someone--the real one to go back to. That’s what we call getting insured.”

As reasonable and logical as her argument sounded, Scorpion still was not convinced. He had known Simisola for as long as he knew Shakirah and every other lady in Pink Roses and he was sure Simisola was the least amongst them that could so such a thing.

“No, no, no, Shakirah. I know Simisola and I know what she can do. She is not like you Shaki! She can’t do that!” Scorpion’s voice was hard and affirmative.

Shakirah grew hot. “How dare you, Kasumu?!” She raised her hand to slap him but he caught it mid air.

“You can play on my intelligence, Shaki but don’t you ever toil with my brute force!” He gnashed his teeth and lowered her hand. He took a few steps backwards and waved his forefinger in front of her. “Let me assure you, Shaki, I will get to the bottom of this.” He turned around and walked out.

Shakirah sank into her chair. Engrossed in a deep thought, she tapped her feet on the ground impatiently. She had had this well-thought out. After she commissioned Spark to do the job, she suddenly came to the realization that it would put her into this very position. Scorpion would definitely come asking questions and so would everybody he told about what she requested of him. That was why she had to pull the plug at the last minute and thank God she did. But she knew Scorpion would stop at nothing to get to the bottom of the matter as he promised. She realized she had to act fast if she was to cover her arse.

EPISODE 30
(CHAPTER TEN)

Three Days Later, St. Anne Hospital.

Simisola had fully recovered and was being discharged from the hospital. Yemi and Ngozi were around to take her home. Yemi cleared the bills and helped pack her things while Ngozi helped her to the car. Few minutes later, they were all in the car on their way to Simisola’s house at Oko-Oba.

“How are you doing now?” Yemi inquired.

“I’m fine now. I just need to fully gain my vitality back. That’s all.”

“Good. I know you will. Just ensure you use your meds and take the supplements I got you and you will be fine pretty soon.”

“I know. Thanks a lot for everything, Yemi.”

“Erm ... ” Yemi said after a short pause. “Simi ... erm ... I haven’t had the opportunity to tell you how sorry I am about Nicole’s actions the other day. Erm ... See, I wasn’t expecting all of that to happen.”

“Yemi, it’s alright. It wasn’t your fault that she ran her mouth the way she did. But on a second thought, Yemi, I think Nicole was right to some extent.”

“Nicole was right?!” Yemi’s head jerked backwards and his eyebrows lifted. “What are you talking about, Sweetie?”

“Look at me, Yemi. Just look at me. I am nothing but a poor ghetto girl. Yes, you have done a lot for me--upgraded me, taught me things--but all that doesn’t change the fact that I am a ghetto girl whose parents are poor farmers in Ajele village. I have only met one of your people, Nicole, and see what that got me. She called me a gold digger, Yemi.” She looked downwards trying to hold back the tears forming in her eyes. She sniffed. She continued, “I haven’t even met your parents, your other friends, and your family yet. What am I to expect if I got all that from only one person? Yemi, I don’t think this will ever work. I don’t think they will accept me.” She dug into her purse for a piece of tissue.

Those words stung Yemi like the venom of a scorpion. Yet he understood how she felt. But he felt otherwise.

“Sweetie, I quite understand how you feel but I strongly believe this can work. All I need from you is to trust me on this. You might call yourself a girl from the ghetto but that’s bullshit! You know what you really are? You are a jewel from the ghetto and the earlier you let that register in your head the better for all of us.” He then took her hand and caressed it tenderly. “Simi, see, you are not just any girl. You are unique. You are intelligent. You could have been a celebrated genius if you had had half the opportunity most of us had. When I look at you, Simi, I see more than a poor local ghetto girl; I see greatness in you! And I need you to change this mentality of yours. You’ve got to start seeing yourself as a force to be reckoned with and that must start NOW! You’ve got it in you, girl!”

Simisola’s dispirited countenance gradually evaporated. She didn’t know that Yemi was such a gifted motivational speaker until now. His inspirational speech touched the deepest point of her heart and unleashed such an inner strength that was ferocious. She looked up. The look was focused. It was full of determination. It was as if she was looking into her future and what she saw was reassuring; the future she wanted. She had caught Yemi’s optimism and it consumed her. Yemi caressed her hand more and she squeezed his.

Just then, Yemi’s phone started ringing. He looked at the caller and turned to Simisola. “It’s dad.”

Simisola shifted uneasily in her seat. “Dad?” she asked, voice shrilled.

“Yes, dad,” Yemi responded but as the conversation with his dad progressed, Simisola noticed the excitement in his voice gradually waned.

Simisola’s shoulders slumped and worry lines painted a caricature of her face once more. She looked outside the window, eyes vacant, and fingers twisting at her hair. Several things ran through her mind.

“Dad wants to talk with you, Yemi said with a long, low sigh.” He handed the phone to her avoiding eye contact.

Simisola instantly felt a tingling in her chest. “Wants to talk to me?”

Yemi felt a painful lump in his throat. He nodded.

Simisola hesitated momentarily but later collected the phone with shaky hands. Beads of sweats formed on her forehead and goose pimples stood tall over her body. She remembered her encounter with Nicole few days back. The egocentric lady had called her all sorts of heart-wrecking names. And now his father, one of the wealthiest and respected business tycoon in the country wanted to talk to her. She didn’t know what to expect. He might want to warn her to stay away from his son. She held the phone close to her ear.

“H ... H ... Hello sir,” she managed to say with trembling lips and chin.

“Hello, Ghetto ...”

Simisola swallowed repeatedly....

EPISODE 31
(CHAPTER ELEVEN)

A BURNING HEAT SWEPT through Simisola. She began to fan herself with her fingers in spite of the air-conditioner being on. She shut her eyes tight and prepared her mind for the worst.

“Hello, Ghetto ... Jewel,” Mr Williams’ soft voice filtered through her eardrum. Her eyes flung open and her hand rushed to her mouth to cover it--not because she was afraid but because she wasn’t expecting the voice to sound so warm, soothing, and inviting. More so, one of the most influential men in Nigeria just called her a Ghetto Jewel. She wasn’t sure she heard him well.

“Goo ... Goooo ... Good afternoon sir,” she stammered, still feeling uneasy.

Mr Williams sensed her uneasiness. He smirked and continue, “Good afternoon Simisola. My son told me about what happened. Sorry, my dear. So, how are you feeling now?”

She looked at the phone screen to reconfirm who was talking and behold the caller ID read: ‘Daddy’. She looked at Yemi still bewildered. Yemi nodded and smiled reassuringly. It was then she realized that Yemi was faking his look of disappointment all the while. She kept the phone back to her ear and responded, “Yes sir. I’m getting better, sir. Thank you, sir.”

“You are welcome, my dear. My son told me of how wonderful a lady you are. He told me you are the most priceless gem in all of Nigeria ...”

“Ah!” Simisola reacted despite herself.

Mr Williams continued, “I told him I didn’t believe him until I see it myself. I can’t wait to see the Beauty Queen that has smitten my boy so badly.”

She looked at Yemi. She flushed. “Ah! You flatter me, sir. Don’t mind Yemi ooo,” she responded chuckling.

“Well, when will you come and pay us a visit?”

“I will discuss with Yemi and get back to you, sir.”

“Okay, please do.”

The discussion went on for another twenty minutes. During the short discussion, Mr Williams marvelled at her level of intelligence and couldn’t agree less with Yemi that she was a genius! In the same vein, Simisola too was taken aback by his exceptionally nice demeanour. For someone of his calibre to have condescended to the level of a ‘nobody’ like her continued to beat her imagination.

Weeks passed and Simisola bounced back to full health. Things soon returned to normal and the lovey-dovey between Yemi and Simisola continued. Little did they know that a thumping upset was on the way.

Days later, Yemi got a text message from an anonymous source. It read:

Hello Yemi, You do not know me but I know you. I know what you initial reaction to this text will be but please take it seriously. You have to be careful with Simisola. This may surprise you but I want you to know that she is not who you think she is. She is presently cheating on you. The beating she got the last time was from a lover who found out about you. I’m sending you this because I know you are a good man and I don’t want you to suffer what my brother suffered in her hands. From someone who cares about you.

Yemi hissed at the message and shrugged it off as nonsense. But that wasn’t going to be the end of it. Each day, more and more of such messages kept coming. Each one containing more scary revelations than the precious one. It continued until he started feeling uncomfortable.

EPISODE 32
(CHAPTER ELEVEN)

Victoria Garden City, Yemi’s Parents’ Residence.

The massive gate opened on it own accord. The picturesque edifice that stood in the middle of the massive compound took Simisola’s breath away. The rough feel of the interlocking stones beneath their feet bade them welcome. If Yemi’s house was a mansion, then this was definitely a castle. For a moment her confidence almost betrayed her. However, remembering the lessons of her private tutor kept her resolute and so was the determination not to relive the embarrassing moment that happened the first time she visited Yemi’s house.

When they entered into the massive living room, Simisola almost stumbled at the sight of Nicole who had an air of importance hovering around her. Mr Williams’ warm embrace provided a much needed cushion from the tension but Mrs Williams’ uninviting demeanour aggravated it.

Soon the table was set for the family to have lunch. That gave Mrs Williams the opportunity to make life difficult for poor Simisola. Her questions were carefully chosen to unnerve her and to clearly show how unworthy of the Williamses she was. This so much delighted Nicole. The questions and accompanying comments delved into her background and education, bringing to the open, in an embarrassing way, her nothingness. The situation was made worse by Nicole’s constant cackles and side comments. Simisola lost her appetite and felt like getting up and running away. The situation would have been lot worse if not for Mr Williams’ and Yemi’s constant tactful intervention.

After a while, Yemi and Simisola spent time with Mr Williams in the garden, while Mrs Williams and Nicole stayed back in the house full of contempt. The more time she spent with the family the more Mr Williams came to like her. Though he spotted some traces of low exposure, he knew that was insignificant in comparison to the totality of her attributes. He was confident that those flaws could be easily brushed up.

By the time Yemi and Simisola left in the evening, Simisola’s heart was weighed down with mixed feelings. On the one hand, she could strongly feel Mrs Williams’ defiance no matter how subtle it appeared. And on the other hand, Mr Williams’ warmth and acceptance was comforting. She didn’t need the Oracle to tell her that Nicole was Mrs Williams’ favourite which the arrogant TV presenter flaunted and carried herself as a daughter-in-law of the family already. This particularly made Simisola wary.

Days later, while Simisola was still processing her emotions over her experience at the Williams’ residence, she ran into Sunkanmi, an old classmate whom she had not seen since his family moved out of the neighbourhood when they were in grade three. Sunkanmi was her next door neighbour and childhood friend. Simisola was aghast at seeing the little eight-year-old boy who used to be her playmate now grown into a big successful young man.

Sunkanmi had always known that Simisola would turn out to be a comely beauty icon for her beauty had always shone forth even as a little girl. Nonetheless, he never imagined her to be this gorgeous! At the sight of Simisola, he closed his eyes, drew in a deep breath and released it gradually. She reminded him of the fun time they had playing together as children--the laughter, the smell, the sound, the touch. All came back rushing at him at that moment. He felt like becoming an eight-year old again holding her tender hands and pulling her soft cheeks.

“H ... Hel ... Hello ... Simisola,” Sunkanmi attempted a conversation but he became tongue-tied. “You ... Um ... I ... Erm ... I mean you ... I ...” He rather fumbled with words and gasped at his attempt at the conversation.

Simisola shook her head from side to side and a bemused smile escaped her lips as she watched Sunkanmi hurried to his car and ransacked everywhere looking for his call card. Seeing Simisola had suddenly plunged him into a state of temporary amnesia. By the time he found it he was sweating and looked funny.

Simisola turned away and burst into laughter. He gave her the card and collected her phone number. He didn’t want the feeling to end and from then on he longed to be with her.

What started out as a harmless friendship grew to pose a great danger to her relationship with Yemi. The reunion brought to life feelings once shared in childhood. Before long, Sunkanmi could not suppress his feelings for Simisola any longer. He began to want more. Thus began the era of gifting and romantic text messages.

Truth be told, Simisola once considered giving him a chance. She could relate more with Sunkanmi and his family. Their relationship was not skewed--their backgrounds were similar. They shared so many things in common. They both grew up in the ghetto and both knew the true definition of poverty. Simisola wouldn’t have to contend with in-laws who considered her unworthy of them and saw her as a gold digger.

More so, Sunkanmi seemed to have it all too--good looks, money, education, excellent character. But something was missing--he was not able to capture her heart as completely as Yemi.

Then one day, the unexpected happened....
