Chief Chinedu Arthur-Ugwa, the south-south coordinator of Ohaneze Ndigbo youth wing, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the Peace Corps bill passed by both chambers of the National Assembly in the interest youths.

The youth leader told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, March 29, in Yenagoa that the bill would help curb unemployment among youths.

Arthur-Ugwa spoke against the backdrop of Buhari’s refusal to assent to the bill.
“We are pleading with him to look into that issue because it is an important bill which is a very key bill to curb the unemployment that the masses are suffering from.

“We need to look into the issues and not the money; we don’t want such a bill to die; a bill that will reduce unemployment among the youths and empower the youths.

“It is just about the youths and I believe that the sitting government promised that when they take over power, things will happen in terms of employing the youths.

“But when the opportunity comes for them to do that, they are trying to recant. It is not good.

“We are begging the government; we are begging the President to take a second look at the bill and see how important that bill is and sign it because it will not be good if the Senate and Reps override him in signing that bill.”
He further argued that the Peace Corps was not structured to interfere or take over the job of existing law enforcement agencies.

“It is for peace and I believe that bill is worthy of passage and Presidential assent because it will go a long way to help youths who are yearning for jobs. It is something that is going to touch lives,” he said.

He also appealed to the Executive and Legislature to work in harmony to ensure good governance.

Meanwhile, a presidential aspirant under National Conscience Party (NCP), Thomas Ikugbese, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to reconsider signing of Peace Corps of Nigeria bill into law.

The Nation reports the non-signing of the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) bill by President Muhammad Buhari is generating ripples among stakeholders especially youths in Ondo state.

He said the establishment of the Peace Corps would have facilitated employment for the teeming youths in the country.
