Churches these days are entertainment centers with just the sole aim of making profits so one shouldn't be surprised.

A lot have been said about comedy in the church in the modern day Christianity. Recently, I stumbled on a Rev. Olusola Areogun's view about this controversial topic and it got me thinking deep. Here is what he has to say:

"You can't play with Quran and the Muslims leave you alone, why should we let it be done with the Bible? have you heard of a comedian going to Osun shrine before? Or have you heard of a comedian doing comedy in the mosque and begin to joke with verses of the Quran? WHY ARE WE DESECRATING THE ALTAR OF GOD? Where have we gotten these pastors that didn't understand the terms and the consecrations of the calling?"

These days,stand-up comedy, comedy drama and all sorts are everywhere in the church. I don't want to mention names because the intention of this thread is not to judge anyone but allow us to rethink and act right. My view is that we need to ask ourselves if the essence of the gospel is to pass a message to the world about the birth, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus for the salvation and transformation of our soul or to entertain the world. Please let's get it right. What is your view?

I think what you should be bothered about now is how you going to make it to the kingdom of God.. All dese things might not even matter in the end

personally i dont like it at all. when i go to church, i want to hear undiluted word of God, pray without distraction, thank God for His numerous blessings and unmerited favours, worship God as appreciation for giving me life. I dont like any other extra activity in the church and if I had my way, I will scrap it from all churches because the house of God should not be a place for laughing jackass angry

There's nothing wrong with comedy in the church, as long as the content is Holy and the 'end game ' is to glorify God. Afterall the Bible says that God laughs.
Hmm see misconception. People will sha look for points, meaningless points to prove that they are right. It is wrong jawe.

Ephesians 5:4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
(Ephesians 5:4)

House of God is a holy place. And anything within it should be done solemnly. The Lord is in his holy temple and let all earth keep silent. The same house of God someone will be cracking jokes and everyone will be laughing. Looking at it in a moral way leaving the spiritual aspect aside, it doesn't look pleasant to me.

All these religious fanatics and religious people saying trash and rubbish. So what makes it a sin. If the joke does not mock the faith and the church. Their is noting absolutely wrong with it.
Re: What Is Your View About Comedy In The Church? by OHOnairaland: 1:16pm On Apr 01, 2018
Anybody who says no comedy in the church should likewise say no entertainment even if na wedding. Let just where uniforms and come and pray and give offerings. No singing, no smiling, no laughing, no eating, infact no looking at the opposite sex cos it could be a source of entertainment.

But my personal opinion is that anything that is good for one and all should be encouraged. But comedy that are vulgar from people that vulgar is not good for all.
Re: What Is Your View About Comedy In The Church? by daveP(m): 1:17pm On Apr 01, 2018
It's very very wrong to bring an idea of mockery and jesting to God's very altar.

We humans tend to abuse things to an extreme level and when we are corrected, we scream extremism at the person correcting. It's very sad that you call a comedian to come and let us all jest about how one sister or brother that was leading praise and worship went about it in one way or the other. Like is that what would now calm my nerves? According to the words of Christ, is that the way to wound down on my weariness? What's the benefit of doing so at the altar? If it has medicinal advantages, please the Eko hotel and suites is there, go and enjoy it there.

We live in a dispensation of Grace so we have a feeling of freedom which we know humans are prone to abuse.

This is the same God that takes his altar so serious and made men to fear climbing way back.

The high priest had to have a rope tied to his waist incase he died in the holies Of holies despite his colleagues knowing he has fulfilled all the levels of consecration before entering there per annum. Just to show that this God took things seriously. Has he changed? He said he hasn't. He just restored our access and freedom, but that's not a reason to abuse the freedom. Cos He is going to end allllll of this with Judgement starting from the church itself.

It's very wrong. very simple and straight. But someone on here would come and start using head to tell me why the church needs to lighten up, bla bla bla....

It's just jesting to me. And we should be making potential disciples how they should respect and fear God, instead of showing them that anything goes right on God's own consecrated altar.

He takes altars seriously, why don't we too?

Someone would come and say in the presence of God there is fullness of joy.... please let them read the verses before and after that verse.. The joy spoken of is by the Holy Spirit and not a comedian which is very temporary, bears no fruit, or add souls to the body of Christ. so these are all mundane.

in my opinion, I think it depends on the kind of church event or program definitely not on a Sunday morning service... a program like a get together, I don't think its a bad idea for comedy to feature. however since it's a church gathering the choice of comedy should be such that it doesn't mock the faith.... #myOpinion

by far the most reasonable comment... It mustn't mock the faith... But churches would rather not...

yes but the church of God is not a disco, fashion fair or strippers club. So sanity and moral must begin from the church. If not so,then you rather stop going to church nd settle with your God.

Can you have sex in d banking hall?
Can you kiss in d mosque?
Can you watch porn in d class room?

No? Then why try do it in church.

Pls stop quoting me.......we know who you are. I mean your type.

It not about the comedy. Just the same way it is not about rap music. It is about the content of their lyrics. If it were possible to record all the activities of Jesus on video, we would have seen one or two scenes where he laughed to what someone said.

Contrary to what people say, church comedy is not (or maybe i shud say, "should not") about making mockery of the body of christ. But about creating a frenzy atmosphere in holiness. Remember, nobody that is born of God call Jesus accurse.

You sound so convincing and logical that you will confuse others. I think we should not use our logical mind to condemn what God has not expressly condemned. Do not add to the laws.

Comedy in the church is very wrong.... where is the place of sobriety, respect for our maker and feeling of remorse for wrong doing then if children of God's gathering is turned to a joke or a comedy centre?
It's one of the enemy's way of creeping into the church unknowingly to the christians.
For me, it's a No! No!! No!!!
