Why Delta State Needs Dr. Cairo Ojougboh
Opposition politics from well-off individuals, Non Governmental Organisations, media and major political party have been adjuged as one of the underlying principles of consolidated democracy. However, the very notion of opposition will be eluded if focused on its semantics, because opposition in politics goes beyond attacking, impugning, blackmailing and trading of blames between the ruling and opposition parties. According to West Minister system in UK, the opposition party sets up a "Shadow Cabinet" which is a team of senior spokespeople chosen by the leader of the opposition to mirror the cabinet in government. Each member of the shadow cabinet is appointed to lead on a specific policy area for their party and to question and challenge their counterpart in the ruling cabinet with alternative policies. In this way the official opposition seeks to present itself as an alternative government-in-waiting. Hence, the beauty of opposition in democracy is embedded in the provision of alternatives, which include alternative candidates and policies. It is the duty of the opposition party to study policies of the ruling party with a view to pointing out inherent errors and providing better alternative.
This however may be the case for party politics across the western world but not so in Nigeria, the Nigeria's oppositions act more or less like enemies of progress, and are always geeked to attack the ruling party and their policies even without articulating better or different ones. And this is why a change in government mighty never result to a change in governance.
Nevetherless, this is entirely different in Delta State as one man opposition has stood out as an embodiment of alternatives for the mis-governance in the state. Inarguably, Delta state is among the juicy states in Nigeria interms of its internally generated revenue and federal allocation accrue to the state. However, it is heart wrecking, that such humongous revenue has never been converted into meaningfully human and capital projects for the benefits of the people.
Fortunately, this ignominious tale of backwardness is about to change as Dr. Cairo Ojougboh whose political trajectory is woven around indept love for Delta state has come with enviable alternatives. For instance, DCO excoriated the incumbent Governor for running a government with no budget but has since promised a prudent and transparent governance in all matters relating to state revenues, awarding and execution of contracts, payment of salaries and other financial dealings of the state. Also, he critized the clueless government of Governor Okowa for negligence and decay in infrastructures and critical sectors of education and health. But has also gone ahead to articulate a road map in revamping the sectors. In education, he promised a compulsory and free education up to university level in state owned institutions. In health sector, being a trained medical doctor, he has promised to build and properly equip hospitals and Health care centres across the state. He vehemently disagrees with the crafty privatization of health sector by the incumbent Governor who purposely underfunds the sector. As regards the horrible state of infrastructures across the state, DCO has promised to build world class infrastructures that will stand the test of time and ensure they are equitably distributed across the four corners of Delta state.
Having observed the politics in Delta state for several years, I make bold to say that DCO stands out as the only politician with a meaningful project to show for every political privilege he has had. In 2003, he was graciously elected into the House of Representatives and was designated as the Chairman House Committee on petroleum resources. Apparently, he was the first Nigerian to have served that position for four years. Under his supervision, the petroleum act that led to the present day petroleum industry guild was introduced. He further undertook lots of physical projects such as the completion of Agbor-Sakpoba-Oganarife road, the digitalization of Agbor telephone exchange, mechanized water projects in Alihami, Ozanagogo and Ekuku, and facilitation of employment of over 600 Deltans into oil companies, Nigerian police and army. More worthy to mention is the 133KVA Benin-Agbor-Asaba substation and transmission lines which has since been commissioned.
Come 2019, all Deltans just like other Nigerians would go to the poll to elect their leaders, it is pertinent they reject the "die minute" politicians who would initiate all kinds of unrealistic projects and also the sudden "opposition tigers" who have never articulated a single project for Delta state and come out enmass to vote Dr. Cairo Ojougboh as the next four years Governor of Delta State.
