[SIR A-ONE Naked Truth Series] THE ENORMOUS TASK OF GETTING A MASTERS DEGREE IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES (Part 1)


First degrees have become so rampant these days. They have become like the sand in a seashore. The value of such degrees has thus diminished.

Many holders of first degrees, bar a few, are half baked. Imagine a graduate who studied an Arts course boasting on social media: "I made it 100% in my BSc." BSc? Really? Not B.A.? What kind of gobbledygook is that? Sadly, countless lecturers are also half baked.

Let's face the crux of the matter and metastasize ahead. Have you wondered why a large number of people prefer to move abroad for their Masters and PhDs? Well, it has to do with the fact that Nigerian schools make postgraduate students pass through too much stress. Also, more value is placed on foreign graduates.

For example, a friend of mine who is definitely not dull, and is a voice on social media has been on his Masters program in a university in the South-South for the past 7 years. Another friend who is currently the H.O.D. in a university spent 13 years on his PhD. What blather is that? There is also a friend who has been on his Masters for 5 years in a university in another part of Nigeria.

What is really the problem with these universities? What is the Nigerian Universities Commission doing about this dire situation? People are getting desperate. The story is told of a young man who shot the man that had delayed him for 7 years in his Masters program. Such things can be averted.

For us in private universities it is a matter of curriculum!

I remembered when Covenant and some others started grumbling about NUC's curriculum being too outdated. NUC then brought about a new curriculum which was for 2014-Mathematics. Covenant quickly adopted the new curriculum for Mathematics. But unfortunately, NUC later came back to say that the 2014 curriculum was just a recommendation and not meant to be implemented thereby forcing us at CU to revert back to 2007 curriculum alongside other Nigerian universities.

I think private universities should be allowed to run and tailor their curriculum as they please..
