What Is Stopping Nigerians And Africans From Winning The Nobel Prize by Nobody: 10:54am On Apr 14, 2018
I being a young scientific enthusiasts I begin to wonder why their is a certain limitation in the brain power of Africans, especially in Nigeria were their are a lot of very smart people.in the area of mathematics, physics chemistry and medicine I have no doubt that their are really gurus in those areas in Nigeria some of them are present in nairaland so why? I hope to someday bag a Nobel prize in physics but I feel discouraged by what am seeing.could it be apathy on the part of students to make themselves known or could be on the part of the government to make them known.it is a shame that we have only one Nobel laureate in literature.but no field medelist and winners of other outstanding prizes

please feel free to correct my views and give possible solutions to this trend of limitations in this continent in the area of science.

There is no Nobel Prize awarded for Mathematics. As for the other disciplines you mentioned, like Physics, Chemistry and Medicine, there is virtually no funding for research coming from the government or private sector.

According to the World Science Foundation, Nigeria contributes less than 0.0001% to scientific research output, so where are the Nobel Prize winners going to come from if we are not pulling our weight in the science community?

There is also the possibility that Nigerians/Africans are less intelligent than other races and are therefore incapable of achieving anything of real significance in science and technology because they lack the cognitive ability to do so. It's a controversial view, but I think it's worth looking into.

thanks for ur reply and insight,of course I know their is no Nobel prize for math its prestigious prize is the field medal.but can anything be done to really introduce the research process into major universities not just for degrees sake but for discovery that may expose Nigeria to the limelight of science

They need to start investing more money into research and they need to integrate the funded research into our educational and economic sector. The world is moving ahead. A time is coming when electric cars will take over from cars which run on fuel. When that happens Nigeria will be left with absolutely nothing.

you made a lot of sense until you wrote the above.... sadly, the problem is not a racial one, its a LOCATION one. many Nigerians/Africans are equally gifted as any other smart person on earth, but they lack the tools and environment to succeed, thats why many who have relocated abroad are just as gifted as any person in their field, and are proving that time and time again.

but hey, you should probably open a new thread on the subject because that right there would be a LONG and INTERESTING subject

if you want to follow the rubbish about Africa that is portrayed by the western media, then by all means do so, but pls dont spread their rubbish.... you see, if it was indeed a RACE thing then ALL black people would have low IQ (whether they lived in Africa, the US or Europe). sadly, we know that is NOT the case, and its all down to the TOOLS provided to you for success. the day NIgeria/Africa care to spend the proper amount of money in research etc (or just proper education environment) then thats when you will understand that nobody is inferior.

Your writing is very effective, an indication of someone who is very learned. However, your logic and sense of reasoning buffle me.

By the way, where are you located? I would be very shocked if you live in the West.

I so much agree with u, infact the same social media has revealed numerous news of Nigerians bagging best graduating in different universities abroad, ranging from Russia to Japan to Ukraine and even the UK .the problem is indeed locational although few Nigerians perform outstanding even within this nation

Well, frm my own view, i believe, it's not a matter of race.
Nigerians are intelligent. But Nigeria, is not ready to help the talented one's, so those intelligent one's are forced to either travel out and explore or stay and become and quit his dreams.

But, still I believe if u want to bag a nobel prize; u need to be optimistic and submit urself to d power of grit.

U can be d next nobel laureate.
