@Tudor why on planet earth would someone have such a foul mouth undecided, if u so damn much believe in tradition why u no dey preach voodooism and witchcraft for T.V, just as the christians and muslims preach their religion grin.
If an ifa worshipper goes preaching on TV, its u same drunkards that'll complain.
Somehow, christians feel its their sole right to badger everyone about god, jesus etc while others aren't allowed to promote their faith.
i think u should get an education.
in as much as our cultures and traditions should be preserved, it doesnt mean you should venture into the part that would destroy you.
What destroys in calling your ancestors for help? Is it not the same way u call ur dead jesus for help?
I bet you still throw twins into the evil forest once they are born. village girl. grin

funny how we hear this all the time from these rats. . .killing twins, killing twins. . . Were all African traditional religions killing twins?

Go read your bible and see how your yahweh ordered the killing and sacrifice of women and children. Religions evolve as human morality changes too. Islam has refused to evolve from dark age practices and thats why we all frown at them.

You goons try to hide the ugly n bloody past of ur yahweh faith while playing to the fore that of our fathers all in a bid to potray ATR's as evil. . . Like I said, i consider u all morons, sue me

I get your point poster. But, you probably do not know that you are up against a multi million naira, dollars if you like, industry that is sustained by fear, pseudo-religion, mass hysteria and ignorance. African people in general, refer to archaic, primitive and barbaric practices as culture because they want to sustain their economic base. Most of these guys in the Yoruba movie genre, I mean producers, directors and acts are not literate, the literates among them are directly from villages where these pre-medieval practices are strong. How can someone call killing of humans for so-called money ritual as culture if not villagers. That does not mean there are not some of them who are literate, but certainly not educated. How can someone leave civilization (city) to seek solution to his marital/finance/economic/health problems in the bush, with one old or young man who has never been to school, does not practice basic hygiene i.e. brush his teeth daily, probably has never seen electricity before?

You can rest assured that African mythology is very primitive, people are not encouraged to think through their problems or challenges except offered some silly remedy which makes things worse for them. Imagine for a second, someone runs into a hard time, and all he could think of is one man, or woman maybe his wife or mother or neighbor, being responsible for his misfortune. Or a woman who apparently cannot conceive and all the advice she could get is going to drink some toxic substance in the name of culture. Is the baby going to be from outer space with 9 fingers, two heads, seven legs? In other words, are they having babies that are different from normal humans. It's just plain irrational.
Abegi. . . Irrationality isnt restricted to african religions alone. All religions are  n irrational.

Wats d rationality in believing a man rose from d dead after three days or someone lived in a fish for 3 days?

To show how entrenched this stupidity and backwardness is, I heard a story of a professor of economics from Africa, who said money supply cannot be tracked because it’s difficult getting the data of those monies that come from RITUALS. Can you imagine that? A professor who was trained in the science and techniques of economics said MONEY RITUALISTS have impact in monetary policy. He didn’t say currency counterfeiters, he directly mentioned money ritualists, how they do it he didn’t explain, probably he couldn’t.

That is why African’s problem defy solutions. That is why even our wars are most brutal. That is why the mind is so warped that nothing seems to be working. There is a nexus between this observation and the state of development of Africa as a whole. Can you imagine how the Hollywood has impacted on the American society and even societies outside America. What is more, these so-called Babalawos are dying of ordinary malaria fever in villages.

Even the Christian movies you talk about still get to show herbalists.
Mount Zion movies show far too many herbalist scenes than most of the Yoruba movies the OP was talking about.
All i know is EVIL never prevails over GOOD in Yoruba movies. . . . .

Yes they show herbalists but did you watch what becomes of them? Mount Zion movies are an evangelistic outreach to people who have been stuck in the deception of these babalawos, they show what true Christians who are missionaries encounter when they go on evangelistic outreaches in remote villages. Religious people who stay in the cities don't know the spiritual battles being fought to set our people free. If you truly watch their films you will realise that God always prevail over evil.

Yoruba films are dying because of the Babalawo problem. Bringing juju into everything has made me to stop watching Yoruba films. Its really disgusting. Its due to lack of quality amongst the producers. They usually involve the babalawos in cheesy idiotic and moronic plots.

Much ado about babalawo.

It is very interesting to note that something as irrelevant as Babalawos in movies can generate so much heat, anger, and ill feelings. B4 y'all continue with ur bickering just get some things str8

1. Babalawo in yoruba movies  have been here a long time and will continue to be produced and enjoyed by many no matter how much U hate it.

2. Ur rantings [ or anything else u may do] can't stop the production of babalawo in yoruba movies,  or people from watching [and enjoying] babalawo in yoruba movies.

Just like God always prevail over evil in Mount Zion movies is the way God always prevail in the Yoruba movies the OP is talking about.
Yoruba movies don't promote Herbalists. . . . .Showing the audience that Babalawos exist is not promoting them.

Are Nigerian movies also promoting prostitutes, hired assassins and armed robbers as well?

Murphy Afolabi is one of the worst Yoruba Producer of all time. Always showcasing his diabolical power or most times herbalitical prowess. For goodness sake, does every misfortune in  Yoruba Movies have to lead to consulting a soothsayer/herbalist?"

I am a Muslim and a Yoruba, can you educate me on your statement about Yoruba Muslims seeing nothing wrong with aajo- alternate source. IF YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT A RELIGION, DON'T MAKE FALSE STATEMENT ABOUT IT. You need to read your Bible about making False statement. Can you point me to the verse or chapter of the Quran that allows “alternate source”. You may not like Islam as a religion but that does not give you any right to say that Islam  accepts the use of Babalawo. The fact that Nigerians are mixing traditions with their religion does not mean that ISLAM allows it AND the same goes for Christianity.

When I first saw your post, I was like I must read this because I agree 100% with the title of your post.

Another Post of yours
"Bukky wright (a Muslim) is sick, you see her first with the herbalist, then Alfa, and finally the Church (Cele or C&S). "
IS IT A CRIME TO BE A MUSLIM AND AN ACTOR? YOU SHOULD BE PROUD THAT SHE IS A NIGERIAN. AM PROUD OF ALL OF OUR NIGERIAN ACTORS REGARDLESS OF THEIR RELIGION.

Religion cannot set anyone free. No religion can obliterate the blight of poverty and disease and man-made problems. It is education. There are no religions in Africa, there are pseudo-religious enterprises. The so-called religious enterprises are a burden on these hapless villagers. What they need is how to grow their crops and get better yields, how to save their excess income and not squander it in ostentatious living, how to avoid or treat snake bite by wearing long boots, how to avoid tetanus infection and not call it attack, how to send their children to school to better their lots and not thinking of them jamming luck someday, how to protect themselves from adverse weather condition through weather information, how to avoid mosquito bites through proper usage of mosquito nets, how to organize themselves into civil societies to confront their representatives and claim their civil rights, how to take advantage of civil arbitration and not take laws into their hands by resorting to jungle justice, how not to have too many children that they cannot take care of. Put simply, how to master their environment. Religion cannot do it. It’s science that does that. The early missionaries in Africa and Asia used this simple technique to develop their host communities, unfortunately since they left, we have gone back to our primitive ways.

Babalawos are herbalists with a lot of knowledge of the medicinal value of herbs. Pastors don't have any medical training. That could be the difference.

I have really enjoyed this thread, most especially I have enjoyed people's response to b444's post, some are really hilarious, like Tudor, however I must say that even though I try to understand the logic behind the topic I really don't think the arguments holds enough ground.

@bee444:
Yoruba movie portraying balalawo's are just as good as you watching a Harry Porter movie that portrays witchcraft. These themes are more symbolic than real life. Although there are elements of these themes in today's society (not just Nigeria but all around the world) their purpose is to tell a story about where people are coming from i.e. their roots, heritage and early culture etc. These are important aspects of society because they tell about your history. Because you see babalawo being the solution to common problems in Yoruba movies does not mean that the producers are promoting babalawos. This is a movie, it is fiction (although possessing an element of truth) and what is seen in not as common as you have put it.

Secondly, Nigerians are not traditionally Christains nor Moslems. They had their own beliefs tied to their own culture way back. It is the introduction of Christainity and Islam that has (sadly) demonized the old beliefs (exactly what you are doing in your response to some people). The old beliefs are just what they are -OLD- however they are not meant to be condemned or demonized. I say this to you as a non-Nigerian. I am italian and I can tell you that Nigeria does not have as many Old traditional beliefs as we do. We are born Catholics in my country however, we have preserved elements of our old beliefs so well we have even sold them to the world as classical beauty. E.g. the nine planets of our solar system are named after famous Roman gods. These gods have been used in movies, story books for children, video games etc.

bee444, I encourage you as a good Christian, movies have symbolic meanings and serve their purpose in reminding us of all our history and elements of what our society was, so that tommorrow you and I can tell our descendants, this is where we came from.
Re: Why Do Yoruba Movies Promote Babalawos? by PastorAIO: 4:46pm On May 19, 2010
You this italian guy, tell me. Why must italian renaissance art be full of depictions of myths and gods. If it is not Leda and the Swan, it is andromeda, or Zeus/jupiter getting up to one thing or the other.

Opera too na the same thing. Imagine Wagner depicting the Valkyries in his operas. I don't want to see any more classical gods or heroes in this modern day christian world, so you better watch yourself or I go vex for you o!! I will break your balls if you continue.

Some of you people dont know the inherent and evil nature of the babalawos. Yoruba culture is the best in africa, period!. The story line in most of the movies is way better and superior to the english ones. But babalawos, jujus and all these fetish practices should be done away with.

Do you know how many ppl whose lives, carriers, advancement in life as been ruined by this evil practices. Many ppl destiny are altered and lives caught short before their appointed time by babalawos and fetishism. All these mysterious death you found common in yoruba land, you think it is ordinary. No my friend, most of them are as a result of ppl that take your 'case' to a babalawo because they were offended.

You know how many famous(or would be famous) sons and daughters of the yorubas whose lives and destinies are truncated by this diabolically forces. This practices is rooted in witchcraft and nothing good comes out of witchcraft. The devil cannot offer anything good to humanity.

But this heathen practices is increasing and will not decrease because we are in the last days. Such practices is common even in europe and movies that as mystical or magical flair to it sells better here in the USA.

Dont get me wrong, yorubas are great ppl. The culture is the best. The use of words, the proverbs, the respect for elders etc are wonderful. But this heathen practices should be done away with from our culture. Because it as limited yoruba progress as individual and a collective body.

If am president of that country, i will ban those babalawos and make it a crime for anyone to seek or practice such! kiss
