all your senseless post just shows emotional hatred. you applied for medicine but got thrown into a meaningless course, is that a reason why you have to hate on the more fortunate ones. study what you want and face your life. doctors are the not the architect of the miserable kind of lives of your type. hatred and disgust for those doing better than you can take you no where in life
What's your definition of meaningless course?..No one is hating on doctors..All I am trying to say is that students should be well-oriented before choosing their career..The issue of students writing jamb 5-6 times because they want to study MBBS is what we are talking about here whereas they can conveniently study other lucrative courses and it's not like most of these students want to study it cos they love it.Most of them do it for the pay..It's not even like you are guaranteed a good job or secured future after graduation in this country..

So no one is showing hatred or disgust for doctors..And just because someone is studying MBBS does not make him/her fortunate than others..

@OP Icewinz. God bless you for this post.
A lot of us have always been misled from childhood by our parents, teachers and society to think that the only succesful people in life are people who study profesional courses like medicine and become doctors.

This is a very terrible and wrong mentality which we must fight against. Medicine is so much overrated in Nigeria.

I refused to apply for medicine in my JAMB against my dad's wish, it wasn't an easy battle but eventually I won and when I showed him my acct balance just after NYSC, he had to apologize and admit that he was wrong to try to force me into what wasn't my interest. Interestingly almost all my guys who went for MBBS are now consultants or senior registrars (we were intelligent boys and girls) and they are all my 'boys' 'for account balance level'.

Abeg fill me in on how our account balance can be mates abeg cheesy

Not everyone who studies medicine makes an excellent doctor. Many view medicine only from the academic perspective. Some manage on completion to leave Nigeria and come here and this is when they realise there is more to medicine than being an academic . I have seen many struggle with the concept of bedside manners. You are not an island you work as a team abroad no one cares which tribe you come from and team work is alien to some. Some end up being struck off for very basic things. I saw a post about career guidance counselling in schools and that is an excellent idea. We all can’t be engineers and doctors and most don’t last in that career.

Attitudinal problem is the issue here which isn't related to the topic being discussed here. A foul attitude won't succeed anywhere even in a world where the person exists alone.

Certainly

SAN will be richer than consultant doctors

A fresh consultant working for the govt earns 700k/month, of you add lecturing medical students to it, will push it up to 1mill/month...How much does a fresh SAN make working for the govt?

The bedside manners is where most of them fail in this country and they are not ready to take correction.

They fail to realize that without the patient, all their knowledge is useless

So without our knowledge, the patients are still useful ba? Patients keep clamoring on bedside manners but looking at it closely, majority of them are the ones who actually lack manners.

They say if you point a finger, 4 fingers are pointing right back at you....

it's only useful in areas where rich pet owners are plenty, and not only that, you'll need connections to work as vet maybe for an agricultural firm, people who usually do vet medicine end up having another business by the side,. If you don't have all these conditions right you'll end up treating ekuke for 500niara

Yeah...I know some patients can be very rude and annoying. It comes with the job unfortunately.

But you know that saying 'the client/customer is always right'? It applies here.

In as much the op' is right in some aspects, there are still some areas to be redressed . The profession of medicine is an adored and respected one anywhere in the world.I think the pays and work environment brouhaha is more peculiar to the Nigeria setting. The decadence in our economic system has affected every profession not only medicine, so the idea of study other courses aside medicine is null and void; barring the ease of getting admission.
Someone mentioned Guidance counselling as a tool to reorientate the inexperienced students but how many will yield to advices at the end of the day?
Nigerians like trying out things before succumbing.
Also, no profession should be studied because of its lucrativeness or whatsoever; It's a bad idea. Invariably, people marrying for beauty alone is destructive and preposterous.
People should understand there's a big difference between a business and a profession; This is where Some Nigerians get it wrong.
A business is driven by the monetary values while a profession is geared by the passion and zeal to cope with whatever it throws at you.
I stand to be corrected, almost every profession is Nigeria is demanding and energy sapping but business can be conducted anyday anytime without much stress and upheaval.
I'd rather the op encourage those in the profession to acquire assests and set up private businesses rather than denigrating and debauching the profession.
However, the basis of picking a profession should be passion- driven ,and not monetary wise. It's the passion that keeps one moving in the face of challenges and intimidations.

If that's the case then everyone will be a businessman cos everyone works for monetary reasons, the only difference is our passion guides the choice in the profession we get to work with.

There are people who have a lot of passion for Medicine and have decided to harness and tap into the business side of it. So saying there's a difference between profession and business is wrong. My profession is my business.

If you tell me and others not to take it as a business but a profession then there'll likely be no doctor left cos what's d use of toiling more than almost everyone else and you tell me to work for passion on an empty stomach, even that passion will die. That's why docs who venture into private practice are successful and usually fulfilled cos they harp on the business side of their profession.

Money is a defence, it answereth all things, a labourer is worthy of his hire. You guys should stop reading that con author called Robert Kiyosaki's book. The guy just dey yearn rubbish.

Every profession is a business, you don't need to be an entrepreneur to be a businessman. As long as you making money, you a businessman cos you investing money in terms of tfare, feeding, clothing, time and manpower into your profession and you're being rewarded with a salary. As they say Time is money. When you play solo that "salary" jacks up even further.

So every profession is a business bro.

Op your post would have made a little more sense if you didn't make that tribalistic statement about Igbos in it, but I will leave that issue for another day because that is not why I am here. However, your post is full of sentiments and sounds as though you are one of those that could't achieve their life long ambition of being a medical doctor.I understand exactly how you feel. But, I want to let you know that whichever way you want to see it, medicine is, and, still remains a noble profession all over the world and the services of a doctor can't be quantified in terms of naira and kobo. There are so many wealthy doctors in Nigeria that rake in millions of naira every month but they don't make noise about it, somehow, an average doctor doesn't have this show off mentality because of the nature of the training he has received, they hardly even have time for that. Funny enough if you @ op or your relative goes to the hospital today and the doctor demands for a huge sum of money from you in order to be rich and live up to expectation you will still run to nairaland to open a thread and start cursing Nigerian doctors that they are too greedy. Things are generally hard in Nigeria, its not peculiar to doctors, in saner climes those guys are real big guys so don't judge with Nigeria. I find it difficult to understand how people abuse doctors in Nigeria especially in social media but when they fall sick they still run to meet them, including those that have studied medicine and surgery in the University of Google. You can always be a doctor if you want to be one but if you don't want to, please face what you are doing, be happy there , and let the doctor deal with his own wahala. It takes a lot to become and still remain a doctor in Nigeria......SHALOM.

A thousand likes for you.

I love this...

Okay go to the market and talk to the seller anyhow in a rude and annoying manner, infact throw the money at him like patients drop things on the floor for doctors, then tell the shop owner "the client/customer is always right" and see if you won't be beaten out of the market like a thief.

That word is the most overrated & abused balderdash I've seen in my whole life.

"Respect is Reciprocal" is the phrase you should put to mind and memorise instead, not that joke you spat up there.

Nothing came with the job, we doctors have just allowed ourselves to be a doormat for every Tom, Dick & Harry to misbehave to and get away with it cos most docs are emotionally needy, really need validation and want to be perceived as "next-to-God" and calm and gentle. There's only a limit to such rubbish before the true nature explodes. Can they try such crap with other professions? Not even with nurse's sef. But with doctor, any rubbish goes, afterall they swore one funny oath laidat.

Rubbish! If I become the Minster of Health, all this nonsense will definitely come to an end cos I go too treat enough patient fvck up in addition to the illness they present with.

I have never seen a doctor in my place doing humanitarian and generous acts. Why? Because they don't have enough.
I have seen engineers working in top firms come out and publicly help the poor, widows, construct roads etc.
the only doctors that would do that are those In politics or those who've gotten a political appointment or something.

Where does a consultant earn 700k/month?
The salary scale for a consultant is CONMESS 5 which is equivalent to GL 17.This implies the highest you can earn as a consultant( when you get to step 10) is a little above 500k. Main reason some people should refrain from surfing the net coz they'll end up getting misinformed and miseducated by media of falsehood like you....

a fresh consultant actually earns 801k and as a consultant your duty hours are grossly reduced so you can combine like 4 different hospitals at a time, and the other hospitals usually employ a pay-as-you-work salary scheme and you will probably end up gathering close to 400k in a month, that's already 1.2 with sic zeros behind for a consultant who is just a beginner, if you somehow become the chief consultant.... or let's say you make it to the CMD level alone Good Lord.

by the way, new consultants hardly lecture in medical schools, they might be mandated to tutor interns which I am not sure adds a single kobo to them.
