Oro festival is an important festival in Yorubaland, it is always used to appease the gods of the land and asked for peace and security in the land.
Also, Oro is always done when a King is about to be enthroned or when a king die (waja).
The number important thing about Oro is that, it is forbidden for Women and Ogberi (non-initiated) which equally applies to males to see it or to move about.
and moreover, if you are in a community and Oro festival is being done and you are not a an indigine of that place, it is forbidden to go out during Oro (even if you're a male).
again, let say you are a Male from Ilesha and you went to Ota and unknown to you, Oro is being done at Ota, if you are already an initiate at Ilesha, nobody will harm you or do anything to you, all you just have to do is answer some questions which is call Aro.
this Aro are questions that only initiates understands.
being one of the Initiate myself, I wish to educate you all on Oro.

some couple of hours ago, I read alot of comments here on Nairaland about this Oro festival that is about to be done in Ikorodu and I saw how many people air their disapproval about it.

first of all, Lagos state is a Yoruba land, take it or leave it.
forget what a certain King said sometimes about Lagos being nomansland.
And Oro is an important culture here.
you can't say because Civilization have taken over we should forget about our culture.
this is our heritage, the only thing we should be proud.
I noticed most of those disregarding this Oro festival are Igbos, no disrespect please but it is stupid how you all insult the culture.
the whites that bring Christianity and Islam you all are rooting for have their cultures too.
you all remain slaves if you cannot cherish your own cultures but choose to celebrate someone's else culture.

all Tribes in Nigeria have their cultures.
igbo have theirs
Yoruba have theirs
Hausa have theirs.
and all this culture should be respected and celebrated.
it only happens at some specific time of the year just like Christmas, Easter, Ramadan and Salah.
and moreover, all these aforementioned celebration are other people cultures and not ours (religion aside).
the white will never celebrate our cultures with the same vague we celebrate theirs.
it is up to us to celebrate our cultures.
and even if you choose not to celebrate it (because of Religion), which nobody is forcing you to, then at least obey the rules.
if Oro don't want women to see it, then stay indoor at that particular time.

at the community I live in, we celebrated it for Nine days non stop.
all Students of AOCOED (Adeniran Ogunsanya college of Education) were asked to go to their respectively towns.
and if they choose to stay, then they should respect the tradition.
it was done peacefully and everything go back to normal.
and to those of you saying that People are killed during Oro and used for sacrifice, this is absolutely WRONG.
I don't know much about long time ago, but now, this isn't so.
and I know some of you might want to ask " what will happen if a Woman go out during Oro or if a non-initiate was caught"
I won't be able to tell you this because it is actually forbidden.
all I can tell you is that, if you happen to find yourself at a place where Oro is being done without knowing, they are always some initiate around who you could run to that will help you, but if you can't find a help, wherever you are, I won't advice you to run.
if you're a female, and you found yourself outside during Oro, if you have a scarf with you, use it to cover your eyes very tightly and sit down somewhere and bend down your head.
I promise you that even if the Oro procession passed directly in front of you, you won't be hurt.
instead, one of the initiate will come and meet you and ask you where you are going, and immediately take you to the place.

this is our Culture and Tradition, let respect it.

Yeah it's or culture but cultures are meant to be improved with the times aren't they?

Killing twins was a culture in the niger delta , hey why don't we resume that ?

Oro is backwards anti progressive and an excuse.for abusive behaviour

We as yorubas should.always aim for being the intellectual light that illuminates this backwater dump.of a country not giving.excuses for.rubbish.

Oro is idolatry and satanic

Idolatry and satanic……

I hope you know this is religious intolerance. You do not insult other people's beliefs just because you dont share their belief

I am Yoruba so I don't.need to be lectured on the origins/ relevance of ORo.

And for the record Oro isn't a religion it's an idolatory practise learn the difference !

I am.a Christian not just by habit but by conviction and Oro practise is demonic

You want to talk about intolerance, do you know what happens to women who don't understand this idolatry in certain areas and are caught outside?
