Crude Oil Prices Race To $80 by Truth234(m): 6:37am On May 15, 2018
Oil prices steadied below 3-1/2 year highs yesterday as resistance emerged in Europe and Asia to U.S. sanctions against major crude exporter Iran, while rising U.S. drilling pointed to higher North American production.

Brent crude was up 20 cents at 77.32 dollars a barrel by 1315 GMT and U.S. light crude rose 10 cents to 70.80 dollars.

Both oil futures contracts hit their highest since November 2014 last week at 78 dollars and 71.89 dollars a barrel, respectively as markets anticipated a sharp fall in Iranian crude supply once U.S. sanctions bite later this year.

It is unclear how hard U.S. sanctions will hit Iran’s oil industry.

A lot will depend on how other major oil consumers respond to Washington’s action against Tehran, which will take effect in November.

China, France, Russia, Britain, Germany and Iran all remain in the nuclear accord that placed controls on Iran’s nuclear programme and led to a relaxation of economic sanctions against Iran and companies doing business there.

The surge in oil prices comes at a time of tight supply amid record Asian demand and voluntary output restraint by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and non-OPEC producers, including Russia.

These prices fluctuate daily, depending on what investors think the price of oil will be going forward.
Like most of the things you buy, supply and demand affect oil prices.
But hopefully, it will keep soaring.. grin

CRUDE OIL PRICES HAS GROWN BY ABOUT 200% SINCE BUHARI AND OSINBANJO GOT INTO OFFICE THIS CURRENT ADMINISTRATION KEEPS MAKING EXCUSES.

RATHER THAN INVESTING IN CAPITAL PROJECTS, BUHARI DECIDED THAT IT WAS BEST TO USE OUR 462 MILLION DOLLARS (166 BILLION NAIRA) FROM OUR EXCESS CRUDE MONEY TO BUY OUTDATED JETS FROM THE UNITED STATES...

THAT MONEY COULD HAVE BUILT A WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY OR UPGRADED SOME OF OUR CURRENT UNIVERSITIES
THAT MONEY COULD HAVE BUILT WORLD CLASS HOSPITALS WITH WORLD CLASS EQUIPMENTS.
THAT MONEY COULD HAVE FIXED ALOT OF FEDERAL ROADS (DEATH TRAPS) IN THE 36 STATES.
THAT MONEY COULD HAVE BEEN USED TO BOOST AGRICULTURE IN THE NORTH AND ALLEVIATE POVERTY

THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS WE COULD'VE DONE WITH THE MONEY BUHARI WASTED ON MILITARY JETS THAT HE CLAIMED WOULD BE USED TO FIGHT THE ILL EQUIPPED TERRORIST GROUP.

To consolidate on the gains that is coming from the sudden rise in the price of crude oil in the international oil market, Nigeria should invest in the Power sectors, Agriculture, Solid Minerals and Information Technology.

The federal government should not get carried away by the sudden rise in the price of crude oil.

The price will soon drop and we are back to square one.

DIVERSIFICATION OF NIGERIA ECONOMY IS A TASK THAT MUST BE ACHIEVED.

NIGERIA MUST BE POLITICALLY AND ECONOMICALLY RESTRUCTURED TO MAKE STATES IN NIGERIA DEVELOP THEIR OWN INTERNALLY GENERATED REVENUE.

Waiting for stipend in the name of federal allocation must be put to a stop.

Most of our northern states have vast uncultivated land, but they shun hardwork and choose to lazy out waiting for stipend from Abuja.

THE RISE IN THE PRICE OF CRUDE OIL IS NOT A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION IN NIGERIA BUT A WAKE UP CALL FOR NIGERIA LEADERSHIP TO CONTINUE TO DIVERSIFY THE ECONOMY.

If the government in Nigeria at all level shun corruption and step up agriculture it will go a long way in solving the economic challenges as there will be availability of food at affordable price.

Agro-allied industries will use the raw material to produce and employment will be generate for the unemployed youth in Nigeria.

Deploying the Saudi Oil Weapon Against Russia

DOWNLOAD FREE PDFPURCHASE HARD COPY £5.00
The West should target a crucial vulnerability of Russia today: its general economic weakness and its heavy dependency on oil revenue, writes leading security and risk analyst, Neil Barnett, in Deploying the Saudi oil weapon against Russia.

Today the West appears powerless in its reaction to President Putin’s intervention in the Ukraine; and possibly in the wider region.

Yet this need not be so: it has been estimated that, if the oil price fell below $90/barrel, “Russia would suffer serious economic pain” (the current oil price is about $103/barrel).

Any collapse in oil prices could only be achieved by encouraging Saudi Arabia to increase oil production substantially, thereby deploying the “Saudi oil weapon”. This has been successfully used on at least two previous occasions: once against the West following the Yom Kippur war (when supply was restricted to increase prices); and once against the USSR following its invasion of Afghanistan.

The Saudis would have two reasons why they might do this:
- it would give Saudi Arabia a rod with which to punish Russia over Syria;
- it would enable close relations to be re-established between the US and Saudi Arabia following their dispute over US-Iranian rapprochement.

In addition, Saudi’s huge financial reserves (at least eight times greater than Russia’s) and its substantial foreign investments would enable it to weather a lower oil price without too much pain.

A lower oil price, and a reduced security risk, would also give a shot in the arm to global economic demand (itself a further benefit for Saudi Arabia).

Barnett thus concludes that the Saudi oil weapon – or at least the threat of its deployment – could therefore encourage Russia to realise that further intervention is not in its self-interest.
